Fed Expected to Pause Rate Hikes This Week, Even as Inflation Stays Stubborn

WASHINGTON — The Federal Reserve is expected to leave interest rates unchanged this week — not because inflation has fully cooled, but because officials have spent weeks signaling that a pause is coming.

After raising rates last month, senior Fed officials suggested they did not need to rush into another move. Investors listened. Expectations for an October hike have fallen to around 15%, according to market pricing cited by analysts.

Then came the complication: September consumer and wholesale price data came in hotter than expected, suggesting the Fed's preferred inflation measure may show little progress toward its 2% target — a stall that has lasted since early 2025.

Why the Fed may still wait

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, speaking on October 16 before the central bank's quiet period, did not mention the inflation reports and said the economy had broadly matched officials' expectations. Former Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan noted that if officials had wanted to hike this month, they would have needed to prepare markets much more clearly.

There is also timing. A surprise hike less than a week before the November 3 midterms would dominate headlines — something Fed officials, who insist politics plays no role in their decisions, are keen to avoid.

What happens next

The AI investment boom, higher input costs from tariffs, and energy prices are keeping the economy resilient. That mix will shape the Fed's next decision in December, when fresh jobs and inflation data are in hand.
