President Donald Trump greeted the Artemis III crew at the White House on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, putting NASA's next step toward the Moon in the Oval Office spotlight just as the mission's complex test plan comes into sharper focus. The Artemis III greeting, listed at 1:30 p.m. ET in the White House daily schedule, was closed to the press, and it came hours before Trump was due to travel to Chillicothe, Ohio, for a 7 p.m. campaign rally.

Artemis III will not itself land astronauts on the Moon. Instead, the four-person crew will spend 14 days in low Earth orbit in 2027 testing whether NASA's Orion spacecraft can rendezvous and dock with two different commercial lunar lander designs — Blue Origin's Blue Moon Mark 2 and SpaceX's Starship Version 3 — in a single flight. Those docking tests are meant to retire risk before Artemis IV attempts a crewed landing near the Moon's south pole in 2028.

Key Points

• Trump greeted the Artemis III crew at 1:30 p.m. ET on October 28, 2026, in the Oval Office, according to the White House schedule; the meeting was closed to the press.
• The crew is NASA astronauts Randy Bresnik, Frank Rubio and Andre Douglas, plus European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano.
• Artemis III is planned for 2027 as a 14-day low Earth orbit mission with three launches and two docking demonstrations, not a Moon landing.
• Orion will first dock with Blue Origin's Blue Moon test vehicle, which the crew will enter for about two days, then dock with a SpaceX Starship test vehicle.
• The mission is a risk-reduction step for Artemis IV, planned to return astronauts to the lunar surface in 2028, the first crewed landing since Apollo ended in 1972.

What Happened

The White House schedule for Wednesday, October 28, 2026, lists the Artemis III greeting between a 12:30 p.m. policy meeting and a 2 p.m. policy meeting, both in the Oval Office, followed by 3:30 p.m. signing time. Trump was then due to depart for Chillicothe, Ohio, arriving in the evening for remarks at 7 p.m. The schedule gives no further detail about the greeting, and because it was closed to the press, no remarks from the meeting had been published at the time of writing.

The timing matters because Artemis III has only recently been reshaped in public planning. NASA now describes it as one of the most complex human spaceflight missions in its history, not because of distance, but because of coordination: three spacecraft, launched on three different rockets, must meet in orbit on a single mission clock, with two different docking systems to prove. A White House greeting does not change that engineering, but it signals that the administration is publicly associating itself with the programme as it moves from planning toward hardware tests.

Bresnik is the commander, Parmitano the pilot, and Rubio and Douglas the mission specialists, according to NASA mission summaries published this week. Their flight will be judged less on spectacle than on whether every handshake between Orion and the two lander test vehicles works exactly as designed.

Background/Context

NASA's Artemis programme aims to return American astronauts to the Moon and establish a sustained presence there, as a stepping stone to deeper space exploration. The last time a human stepped on the Moon was during Apollo, which ended in 1972 — more than half a century ago. Artemis II flew astronauts around the Moon, and Artemis III was once expected to be the landing mission. Under the revised plan reported this week, Artemis III becomes an Earth-orbit demonstration, and the landing moves to Artemis IV in 2028.

The change reflects a hard lesson of lunar exploration: the most dangerous moment of a landing mission is not launch, but the transfer between spacecraft. Astronauts must leave Orion, board a lander, descend, ascend again, and rejoin Orion — every step depending on docking, communications, software and life support. Testing those interfaces in Earth orbit, where an abort and return remain possible, is far safer than discovering a flaw on the way to the Moon.

That is also why NASA is testing two lander designs at once. Blue Origin and SpaceX are both developing commercial human landing systems, and Artemis III is designed to show how Orion works with each. The results will inform which systems, procedures and docking arrangements NASA relies on for Artemis IV and beyond, rather than locking the programme to a single design before it has flown.

Artemis III: Three Launches, Two Dockings

The mission sequence begins with Blue Origin launching a test version of its Blue Moon Mark 2 lander into low Earth orbit, about 273 miles above Earth. NASA then launches Orion and its four astronauts aboard the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. After checking Orion's systems, the crew manoeuvres into an elliptical orbit and then a circular orbit about 345 miles up, positioning for rendezvous.

Once Orion docks with Blue Moon, the astronauts are expected to spend about two days inside the test vehicle, assessing its cabin environment, controls, atmosphere, pressure and life-support systems. Blue Moon's test article can remain in orbit for up to 30 days, giving planners flexibility in the launch sequence. This is the deeper of the two tests: the crew actually enters the lander and lives with its systems.

After undocking from Blue Moon, Orion prepares for its second rendezvous, with a SpaceX Starship Version 3 test article launched from Florida into a lower orbit, about 206 nautical miles up, carrying an additional docking system at its forward end. That demonstration is expected to last up to two hours, and the astronauts will not enter Starship. Instead, engineers will evaluate controllability, communications, integrated software and the dynamics of docking and undocking — and compare a forward docking arrangement with the side docking port used for Blue Moon.

Beyond the dockings, the crew will test Orion's Crew Survival System suits, docking sensors, thermal and acoustic measurements, and human-factors questions about working in the spacecraft over an extended flight. They will also practise health assessments without direct communication with mission control, run a cellular biology experiment, make Earth and solar observations, and test concepts for handling lunar samples on return. After up to five further days in orbit, Orion will re-enter and splash down in the Pacific Ocean off California, where NASA and US Navy teams will recover the crew.

Reactions/Quotes

NASA Artemis programme manager Jeremy Parsons has summed up the mission's purpose in a single line: "Every piece of this mission in Earth orbit is designed to reduce risk before we put astronauts back on the Moon." That framing is important. Artemis III is not a consolation prize for a delayed landing; in NASA's account, it is the work that makes a landing credible.

No remarks from Trump's Oval Office greeting had been released at the time of writing, because the meeting was closed to the press. That restraint matters for readers: this article does not attribute any statement about Artemis III to the president from today's meeting. What is documented is the schedule itself, the crew, and the mission plan NASA has published.

Why It Matters

A docking failure in Earth orbit is a problem engineers can study, fix and fly again. The same failure near the Moon could strand a crew or end a mission. By testing two different commercial landers on one flight, Artemis III also protects the programme against single-design risk: if one docking approach reveals a flaw, NASA learns it before astronauts depend on it for a landing.

The mission also matters for the wider space economy. Orion, Blue Moon and Starship come from different organisations and fly on different rockets, and were never designed as one system. Making them cooperate in orbit is the technical foundation for a sustained lunar presence, not just a single landing.

Finally, there is a political dimension. A crewed return to the Moon is a multi-administration, multi-billion-dollar commitment, and public attention tends to peak at launches and landings, not at docking tests. A White House greeting keeps the programme visible in a period when its most important work is deliberately unglamorous: proving, in Earth orbit, that the pieces fit together.

What Happens Next

Next, the crew continues training while NASA, Blue Origin and SpaceX work toward the 2027 launch window. No final launch day or month has been confirmed in the material published so far, and the exact launch order and spacing will depend on vehicle readiness — Blue Moon's longer orbital lifetime gives planners more slack than Starship's shorter one. Watch for NASA updates on hardware milestones, crew training, and any confirmed launch sequence, as those will be the first real test of whether the three-launch plan holds together.

After Artemis III, attention turns to Artemis IV in 2028, the planned crewed landing near the lunar south pole. The findings from both docking demonstrations, the suit and sensor tests, and the sample-handling work will feed directly into that mission's procedures. If Artemis III finds problems, expect schedule pressure on Artemis IV — and that, in NASA's telling, is exactly the point of flying the test first.
