The San Diego Islamic Center lockdown ended on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, after a tense two-to-three-hour security scare that shut the mosque, locked down nearby schools and sent officers to mosques across the city. Police later confirmed the woman whose movements triggered the response was no longer in San Diego County, and the Islamic Center reopened for evening prayer with, police said, no known threat remaining.

For a community still living with the memory of a deadly attack at the same site in May, the afternoon was frightening even though it ended without injury. Officers rushed to the centre in the Clairemont Mesa area, in the 7000 block of Eckstrom Avenue, after reports that a woman in a mental health crisis might be armed and might be heading there. She did briefly reach the property and speak to a security guard before driving away, police said. She made no direct threat against the centre or any other location, according to investigators.

Key Points

• The Islamic Center of San Diego was placed on lockdown on Tuesday afternoon, October 27, 2026, "out of an abundance of caution," police said.
• Police issued a public safety alert for a grey 2015 Toyota 4Runner with New York plate KGN3027, urging anyone who saw it to call 911 and not approach it.
• The lockdown was lifted by about 4 p.m. after police determined the woman at the centre of the scare had left San Diego County.
• The centre reopened for evening prayer, and police said there was no known threat to it or to any other San Diego mosque.
• The scare came five months after a May 18 attack at the same mosque in which two teenage gunmen killed three people before taking their own lives.

What Happened

The San Diego Police Department announced at around 3 p.m. local time that the Islamic Center of San Diego "is currently on lockdown out of an abundance of caution." The department said it had "a police presence at the location to ensure everyone's safety" and asked the public to avoid the area while officers worked.

According to police accounts reported by the California Post, the chain of events began earlier in the afternoon, at about 1:50 p.m., when officers were alerted to a person driving erratically. The driver had already evaded Carlsbad police before heading south into the city of San Diego. By 2:30 p.m., police received information that the woman was experiencing a severe mental health crisis and had mentioned heading to the Islamic Center of San Diego.

Because of urgent concern that she might be armed, tactical units rushed to the scene, arriving within five minutes, and coordinated with mosque officials to put the emergency lockdown in place. The complex houses a full-time private school and youth programmes, so many children were on the property at the time. Senior leadership at the centre secured the premises and alerted parents of children attending its school, local broadcaster ABC 10News reported.

Investigators later established that the woman had briefly reached the property before police arrived. She spoke directly with an on-site security guard and then drove away. As officers searched for her vehicle, the security net widened: schools in the immediate area were also placed on lockdown, and officers were posted at various mosques across San Diego as a precaution.

The San Diego Police Department then issued a public safety alert: "Be on the lookout for a 2015 grey Toyota 4Runner, New York license plate KGN3027. If located, do not approach the vehicle. Call 911 immediately." The alert, and the lockdown itself, spread quickly on social media, where many people first learned of the incident through the department's own posts.

Background and Context

Tuesday's scare cannot be separated from what happened at the same mosque on May 18, 2026. On that day, two teenage gunmen opened fire at the Islamic Center of San Diego, killing a security guard and two worshippers before taking their own lives. The attackers, Caleb Vazquez, 18, and Cain Clark, 17, were later found dead inside a vehicle near the mosque.

Investigators recovered writings in the shooters' car and found hate inscriptions on their weapons, leading authorities to describe the May attack as motivated by anti-Muslim and racist views. Police have said the attackers intended to "kill as many people as possible that day" and wanted their actions and ideology spread to a wider audience.

The prosecution arising from that attack is still active. In August, prosecutors secured an indictment charging Sarah Lindsey Santiago, 17, a student in North Carolina, with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Prosecutors allege she agreed before the attack to livestream the massacre, distribute the recording publicly and release the gunmen's manifesto. She has not been accused of being present at the shooting.

That history explains why a precautionary lockdown on Tuesday, even one that ended without violence, carried such weight for worshippers, parents and staff. A mosque that is also a school, and a community that buried three people in May, will inevitably hear a police alert differently from a place with no such recent trauma. Community leaders and congregants, as reporting on Tuesday noted, remained on alert even as police stressed that the measure was precautionary.

San Diego Islamic Center Lockdown: How the Afternoon Unfolded

The timeline published by police and local media shows how quickly a road incident became a citywide precaution. At about 1:50 p.m., the erratic-driving report reached police. The driver had already slipped away from Carlsbad officers to the north. Within about 40 minutes, police had information linking the driver to a possible destination: the Islamic Center of San Diego.

Tactical units arrived within five minutes of that warning and worked with mosque officials to lock the site down. The department's 3 p.m. public announcement formalised what was already happening on the ground: officers at the centre, the public asked to stay away, and updates promised as information became available.

Police later told the California Post they were "working to clear the remainder of students" before holding a news briefing with up-to-the-minute information. That detail underlines the practical challenge of the afternoon: securing a site that is not only a place of worship but also a school, with children, teachers, parents and worshippers all needing clear, calm instructions at once.

By 4 p.m., the picture had changed. Police confirmed the woman was no longer in San Diego County and alerted law enforcement in the area where she was last believed to be. The lockdown was lifted, the centre reopened, and evening prayer went ahead. CBS 8 reported that the tense standoff had lasted two to three hours in total.

Reactions and Quotes

The San Diego Police Department's own words framed the response from the start. "The Islamic Center of San Diego is currently on lockdown out of an abundance of caution," the department said on X. "SDPD has a police presence at the location to ensure everyone's safety. Please avoid the area. Additional updates will be provided as information becomes available."

That phrase, "out of an abundance of caution," was repeated across police statements and news reports throughout the afternoon. It was both a reassurance and, for a community seeking clarity, a frustration: the initial announcement did not explain what had prompted the lockdown, leaving worshippers, families and neighbours to wait for details.

Later reporting filled in part of that gap. Police said the woman had driven erratically and made suicidal statements to her family before briefly visiting the mosque. Authorities confirmed, however, that she never made any direct threats against the Islamic Center or any other location. That distinction matters: the lockdown was a precaution against a feared risk, not a response to a threat made against the mosque itself.

Police also moved to reassure the wider Muslim community. Officers were dispatched to mosques throughout San Diego, and the department said there was no known threat to the Islamic Center of San Diego or any other San Diego mosque once the lockdown was lifted. The investigation, police said, is ongoing.

Why It Matters

Tuesday's incident matters for three reasons. First, it shows how quickly police now move to lock down a vulnerable site when a possible armed person is reported nearby, especially a site with children on the premises. Tactical units arrived within five minutes, nearby schools were locked down, and officers were posted at other mosques. That is a far more visible, citywide response than a single-site alert.

Second, it shows the long shadow of the May attack. A community that has already suffered a mass shooting at its mosque cannot treat a lockdown as routine, however precautionary police say it is. The presence of children at the centre's school, the memory of three deaths in May, and an ongoing murder prosecution all raise the stakes of every new alert, and they raise the importance of clear, fast communication from police.

Third, the incident is a reminder of how mental health crises can spill into public safety emergencies. Police described a woman in a severe mental health crisis, driving erratically, making suicidal statements to family, and evading officers in one city before heading to another. The response involved multiple police departments, tactical units, school lockdowns and a public vehicle alert. How that crisis is followed up — by police, by health services and by family — will matter as much as how the afternoon itself was handled.

What Happens Next

Police say the investigation is ongoing. The immediate questions are where the woman is now, whether she is safe and receiving help, and whether any charges will follow the erratic driving and the evasion of Carlsbad police. Police have already alerted law enforcement in the area where she was last believed to be, outside San Diego County.

For the Islamic Center, the next steps are quieter but important: a return to normal routines for its school and youth programmes, continued coordination with police on security, and support for children, parents and worshippers who spent an afternoon under lockdown. Evening prayer resumed on Tuesday, a small but significant sign of normality restored.

The May attack case will also continue separately. The prosecution of Sarah Lindsey Santiago, charged in August in connection with the livestreaming and manifesto plans, remains active, and the community will be watching for the next court steps in that case.

Police have not said whether Tuesday's lockdown will lead to any change in security arrangements at the centre or at other San Diego mosques. For now, the department's message is that there is no known threat, and that officers remain available to the community.
