Columbus police arrested Brittany M. Stroud on Tuesday morning, October 27, 2026, ending more than a week on the run after her 17-month-old daughter died with a fatal amount of fentanyl in her system. The arrest, in Columbus, closed the fugitive chapter of a case that began on October 13 in the small Pickaway County village of Orient, Ohio, and it sets up a first court appearance on Wednesday, October 28, in Circleville Municipal Court. Stroud, 30, faces involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment and possession of a controlled substance charges, and her mother, who held court-ordered custody of the child, faces complicity charges on the same three counts. The charges are allegations, and both women are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

What Happened

Deputies from the Pickaway County Sheriff's Office and Scioto Township medics were dispatched at 11:14 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, to 7809 High Street, Unit 3, in Orient, on a report of a one-year-old girl who was not breathing. Emergency crews arrived first, began CPR and rushed the child to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus. Deputies then made contact at the scene with the girl's mother, Brittany Stroud, and a detective responded to continue the investigation. Investigators later determined the child was actually 17 months old. The sheriff's office said it was notified at 11:56 a.m. that the child had been pronounced dead at the hospital.

Reporting on the 911 call, carried by local outlets from the probable-cause affidavit, added a further detail about that morning: Stroud told dispatchers she had checked on her daughter at about 7:30 a.m., heard her snoring, and went back to sleep, then woke at about 11 a.m. and found her not breathing. That account comes from the affidavit as reported, not from a statement by the sheriff's office itself, and it does not by itself explain how fentanyl came to be in the child's system.

An autopsy performed on October 14 at the Franklin County Coroner's Office found a fatal amount of fentanyl in the toddler's system, according to the sheriff's office. Detectives then executed a search warrant at the Orient residence and seized evidence, and carried out several additional search warrants while working with the Columbus Police Department on the case. On October 16, Detective Sergeant Robert Dauberman filed the charges against Brittany Stroud, and arrest warrants were issued for both women.

Tammy Stroud turned herself in to the Pickaway County Sheriff's Office on October 18 and was arraigned the next day in Circleville Municipal Court, where she was given a $250,000 bond. Brittany Stroud's warrant remained outstanding for more than a week. The sheriff's office said she was last seen driving a red Jeep Compass and was known to frequent the Franklin County and Columbus areas. On Tuesday morning, October 27, the Columbus Police Department took her into custody on the outstanding warrant. Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey said she was transported to the Pickaway County Jail without incident and is scheduled for an initial arraignment on Wednesday in Circleville Municipal Court. The Columbus Dispatch reported that she is being held in the Pickaway County Jail awaiting that October 28 hearing.

Background and Context

The custody arrangement sits at the centre of the case. Detectives working with Franklin County Children Services and the National Youth Advocate Program learned that a Franklin County court order required the child to be in the custody of 52-year-old Tammy M. Stroud, the girl's grandmother and Brittany Stroud's mother. Under that same order, Brittany Stroud was barred from having unsupervised visitation with the child. The sheriff's office has not publicly explained, in the material reviewed for this article, how the child came to be with her mother on October 13, or where Tammy Stroud was that day. Those are questions the court proceedings may now address.

Orient is a small village in Pickaway County, south of Columbus, and the case has drawn attention well beyond it because of the combination of a toddler's death, a court-ordered custody arrangement and a week-long search for a wanted mother. The sheriff's office credited its Detective Bureau for what Hafey called a relentless effort over the course of the investigation, and thanked the Columbus Police Department, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the U.S. Marshals Service for their assistance in locating Stroud. The involvement of the Marshals Service, in particular, underlines that the search was treated as a serious fugitive effort rather than a routine warrant service.

The charges themselves also matter for what happens next. Involuntary manslaughter as a first-degree felony is the most serious of the three counts against Brittany Stroud, followed by child endangering as a third-degree felony and possession of a controlled substance as a fifth-degree felony. Tammy Stroud faces complicity versions of the same three offences, meaning prosecutors allege she aided or was otherwise complicit in the conduct, rather than alleging she committed the same acts herself. The distinction will be central to how each woman's case is argued, and to what evidence prosecutors present about each woman's role.

Ohio Fentanyl Death: What Investigators Say, and What They Have Not Said

What investigators have established, on the public record so far, is a timeline and a cause of death, not yet a full explanation of how the child was exposed to fentanyl. The sheriff's office has said the autopsy found a fatal amount of fentanyl in the toddler's system, and it has said search warrants were executed and evidence seized. It has not said, in the releases and reports reviewed, where the fentanyl came from, whether it was found in the home, or whether any particular person supplied or administered it. Readers should therefore treat any claim about the source of the exposure as unconfirmed unless and until investigators or prosecutors say so in court.

Equally, several practical details of the arrest remain unreported. The sheriff's office has said Columbus police took Stroud into custody on Tuesday morning, but it has not publicly described the exact location of the arrest, whether anyone else was present, or what, if anything, was seized at the time. No bond figure for Brittany Stroud has been reported ahead of her arraignment, and no plea has yet been entered. Those details are expected to emerge at Wednesday's hearing in Circleville, and this article will be updated as they do.

What is clear is that the case will now move from investigation to prosecution. An initial arraignment is typically where charges are formally read, a defendant enters a plea, and the court addresses bond and future dates. For Tammy Stroud, who has already pleaded not guilty and been given a $250,000 bond, the next steps will run on a parallel track. Whether the two cases are heard together, or proceed separately, is a decision for the court and prosecutors that has not yet been announced.

Reactions and Quotes

Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey credited his office's Detective Bureau for its relentless effort over the course of the investigation, and thanked the Columbus Police Department, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the U.S. Marshals Service for their assistance in locating Stroud. The sheriff's office also included the standard but important caution that suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court, a reminder that the charges, however serious, are allegations that prosecutors must now prove.

No statement from Brittany Stroud, Tammy Stroud or their lawyers had been reported in the coverage reviewed for this article, and no family statement about the child had been published. That silence is not unusual at this stage: with an arraignment still pending for Brittany Stroud, defence lawyers often wait until they have seen the full charging documents before commenting. The absence of a defence account means the public record currently rests on the sheriff's office releases, the criminal complaints and the reporting of the 911 call.

The case has also prompted a wider, quieter reaction in the community around Orient and Pickaway County, where a toddler's death from fentanyl is the kind of loss that lingers long after the headlines move on. Local coverage has focused, so far, on the facts of the investigation rather than on commentary, and no vigil or public memorial had been reported at the time of writing. If the family chooses to speak, or if community tributes are organised, they will form part of the next chapter of this story.

Why It Matters

This case matters for three reasons. First, it is about a child who should have been protected twice over: by the adults around her, and by a court order that placed her in her grandmother's custody and barred her mother from unsupervised visits. When a custody order is breached and a child dies, it raises hard questions about monitoring, enforcement and the support available to families under supervision, questions that go beyond any single prosecution.

Second, it is a reminder of how dangerous fentanyl is for small children. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid, and amounts that an adult might survive can be fatal to a toddler, whose small body weight and developing system leave almost no margin for error. Public health agencies have warned for years that fentanyl's spread into homes, including through counterfeit pills and contaminated surfaces, puts children at particular risk. Cases like this one, whatever the precise source of exposure turns out to be, illustrate why safe storage and immediate medical response matter so much.

Third, the case shows how the justice system handles the aftermath of a child's death: methodically, and in public. The sheriff's office released its timeline, the coroner established the cause, charges were filed within three days of the autopsy, and the search for a fugitive suspect involved multiple agencies. The arraignment on Wednesday will be the first time the case is tested in open court, and the proceedings there will set the tone for everything that follows.

What Happens Next

Brittany Stroud is scheduled for an initial arraignment on Wednesday, October 28, in Circleville Municipal Court. At that hearing, the court is expected to formally present the charges, address her plea and set bond and future court dates. Tammy Stroud's case, in which she has already pleaded not guilty and been given a $250,000 bond, will continue separately. Prosecutors may also disclose further evidence, including material seized under the search warrants, as the cases move toward preliminary hearings or grand jury proceedings.

Beyond the courtroom, investigators may still be working to establish how the child was exposed to fentanyl, and whether anyone else bears responsibility. If further charges are filed, or if the existing charges are amended, those developments will be reported as they emerge. For now, the most important date on the calendar is Wednesday's arraignment, when Brittany Stroud will appear before a judge for the first time since her arrest.
