Toyota is recalling 228,367 Sienna Hybrid minivans in the United States after federal safety regulators warned that second-row seat backs may fail to stay locked in a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. The Toyota Sienna recall covers certain seven-passenger Sienna Hybrids from the 2022 through 2026 model years, and dealers will fix the problem free of charge, either with a software update or, for some vans, by replacing the second-row seat backs.

Key Points

• Toyota is recalling 228,367 Sienna Hybrid seven-passenger minivans in the United States over second-row seat backs that may unlock in a frontal crash.
• The recall covers certain 2022-2026 model-year Sienna Hybrids, built between September 2021 and July 2026, according to recall filings.
• NHTSA says the force of a crash could disengage the seat back from its locked position, leaving an occupant less protected and raising the risk of injury.
• Dealers will update the supplemental restraint system software free of charge; vans with the Mobility as a Service package will get two replacement second-row seat backs.
• Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on December 7, 2026, and owners can call Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
• Separately, Toyota is recalling 105,794 Land Cruiser Hybrids over a fuel-tube connection that may leak, taking the combined Toyota recalls announced this week to more than 334,000 vehicles.

What Happened

The recall was announced on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, when NHTSA published details of the campaign. In its summary, the agency said that in certain frontal crashes, the force involved could disengage the second-row seat back from its locked position. A seat back that moves in a crash may fail to properly restrain its occupant, increasing the risk of injury.

The problem is specific to the Sienna Hybrid's second-row captain's chairs, which carry integrated seat belts with pretensioners. A pretensioner is a device that pulls the belt tight in the first instants of a crash, holding the occupant in the right position while the rest of the restraint system does its work. In the affected vans, the interaction between the pretensioner firing and the recliner mechanism inside the seat can, under a narrow set of crash conditions, defeat the lock that holds the seat back upright.

Toyota has confirmed no field technical reports and no warranty claims in the United States related to the condition as of October 12, 2026. That matters for owners trying to judge the urgency: the recall is precautionary, triggered by laboratory testing rather than by a string of crashes or injuries on the road. Even so, safety recalls are issued precisely because a failure in a real crash could be serious, and owners are advised not to ignore the letter when it arrives.

The remedy depends on how the van is equipped. For most affected vehicles, dealers will update the software in the supplemental restraint system electronic control unit, which governs how and when the pretensioners fire. For vehicles fitted with the Mobility as a Service package, dealers will instead replace the two second-row seat backs. Both repairs are free. Toyota's numbers for the recall are 26TB24 and 26TA24, which owners and dealers can quote when booking the work.

Background and Context

The defect was found by accident, in the best possible way: during testing, not in a crash. Between January and November 2025, Toyota engineers observed a rear seat back recliner disengage during prototype sled tests that were evaluating modified seat designs for future vehicles. A sled test reproduces the forces of a crash on a test rig without wrecking a whole vehicle, and it is a standard step in developing new seats and belts.

What followed was a long engineering investigation. Between late 2025 and October 2026, Toyota ran dozens of sled and full-scale crash tests to pin down exactly how the failure happened. The variables turned out to be unusually fiddly: floor acceleration, friction inside the recliner, the timing of the pretensioner firing and the recline angle of the seat all had to line up in a particular way. Only certain combinations of frontal impact force, seat displacement and deployment timing could force the internal cam to rotate and let the recliner unseat from its locked position.

Toyota also pulled second-row seats from vehicles already in service to check whether time and use changed the picture. With the failure mode confirmed, the company decided on October 14, 2026, to launch a voluntary safety recall. NHTSA published the campaign on October 27, and owner letters are scheduled for December 7, a gap that reflects the time needed to prepare parts, software and dealer instructions.

The Sienna is a significant vehicle for Toyota in the United States. It is the company's family minivan, sold only as a hybrid in its current generation, and the seven-passenger layout with second-row captain's chairs is one of its most popular configurations. The recall population of 228,367 vans, built from September 2021 to July 2026, spans almost the whole current generation, which is why the number is so large even though the failure requires a specific set of circumstances.

Toyota Sienna Recall: What the Defect Means for Families

For a family minivan, the second row is where the action is: children in car seats, grandparents on long trips, teenagers on the school run. A seat back that stays locked is fundamental to how the whole restraint system works, because the belt is anchored to the seat itself in these captain's chairs rather than to the body of the van. If the recliner unlocks, the seat can fold or fall back, and the belt geometry changes at exactly the moment it matters most.

That is also why the fix differs by vehicle. A software change to the restraint control unit can alter pretensioner timing enough to break the chain of events that unlocks the recliner. In the Mobility as a Service vans, which are built for shared-use and fleet service and see harder, more frequent use, Toyota is going further and replacing the seat backs outright. Owners do not need to work out which group they fall into: the dealer will check the vehicle identification number and apply the right remedy.

There is one practical point owners often miss with recalls of this kind. A recall is tied to the vehicle, not to the person who bought it new. If you bought a used 2022-2026 Sienna Hybrid, you are still covered, and the repair is still free. Checking the VIN on NHTSA's website or calling Toyota on 1-800-331-4331 is the fastest way to confirm whether a particular van is included, because the recall covers certain vehicles within the model years, not necessarily every Sienna built in that period.

A Second Toyota Recall: Land Cruiser Fuel Leak

The Sienna was not the only Toyota recall announced this week. Toyota is also recalling 105,794 Land Cruiser Hybrids from the 2024-2027 model years because the fuel tube connection near the fuel tank may disconnect and leak fuel. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire, which is why the company is acting on it alongside the Sienna campaign.

For the Land Cruiser, dealers will inspect the connection and install a supplemental clamp, or, where necessary, replace the resin fuel tube and install a supplemental clamp, free of charge. Owner notification letters for that recall are expected to be mailed on November 29, 2026, about a week before the Sienna letters. Toyota's numbers for the Land Cruiser recall are 26TB23 and 26TA23. Together, the two campaigns cover 334,161 vehicles, a reminder that even the most reliable brands run large recall programmes when testing turns up a risk.

Large recall weeks are not unusual in the American auto industry, where a single shared component can sit in hundreds of thousands of vehicles. What stands out here is the contrast between the two defects: one found in a laboratory before it hurt anyone, and one involving a connection that could leak in daily use. Both, however, end in the same place for owners: a free dealer visit and a letter in the mail.

Reactions and Quotes

NHTSA's published summary is deliberately plain, as recall notices usually are. The agency states that the seat backs "may fail to stay secured in a crash" and that dealers "will update software or replace seat backs, free of charge, depending on the vehicle configuration." The notice's key safety sentence, repeated across coverage of the recall, is that a disengaged seat back "could disengage from its locked position, failing to properly restrain occupants and increasing injury risk."

Toyota's own account, as set out in its filing, stresses the testing history: the problem surfaced in prototype sled tests, was investigated with dozens of further tests over nearly a year, and produced no confirmed field reports or warranty claims in the United States before the recall decision on October 14. The company has not announced any injuries linked to the condition, and no regulator has suggested owners should stop driving the affected vans while they wait for their letters.

Consumer advice around recalls is consistent: do not wait for the letter if you are concerned. Owners can check their VIN now, book the repair when dealers are ready, and keep using the vehicle in the meantime unless Toyota or NHTSA says otherwise. For families with children in the second row, the practical step is the same as for any recall: get the VIN checked, get the appointment booked, and keep the recall letter with the vehicle's service records.

Why It Matters

Recalls of this size matter for two reasons. The first is straightforward: more than 228,000 families drive the affected vans, and a restraint failure in a crash is exactly the kind of defect the recall system exists to catch. The second is about trust. Toyota's reputation in the United States rests heavily on reliability, and its handling of a defect found in its own testing, with no injuries and no customer complaints forcing its hand, is the version of a recall that safety advocates prefer to see: early, voluntary and free.

There is also a wider context. The Sienna recall lands in a year when regulators and manufacturers have been unusually active on vehicle safety, and it sits alongside a long list of 2026 recalls across food, drugs and consumer goods that have kept American households checking lot numbers and VINs alike. For owners, the lesson is the same in every category: the check is free, the fix is free, and the cost of ignoring the letter is the only part that is not.

Finally, the Land Cruiser pairing matters because it shows how recalls cluster. Two unrelated defects, two different systems, one manufacturer, one week. Owners who drive both a Sienna and a Land Cruiser, or who run a small fleet, should check every vehicle in the household rather than assuming one letter covers them all.

What Happens Next

Land Cruiser owners will hear first, with letters expected on November 29, 2026. Sienna owners follow on December 7, 2026. Dealers will then carry out the software update or the seat-back replacement, depending on the vehicle's equipment. Because the Sienna fix is largely software, many appointments should be quick, although the seat-back replacements for Mobility as a Service vans will take longer and depend on parts availability.

Owners who want to move faster than the mail can check their VIN on NHTSA's recall website or call Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331, quoting recall numbers 26TB24 and 26TA24 for the Sienna and 26TB23 and 26TA23 for the Land Cruiser. Anyone who has already paid for a related repair should keep receipts, as manufacturers typically reimburse recall-related work done before the campaign, subject to their reimbursement plan.

Regulators will also watch the completion rate. Recall completion is the weak link in the system: millions of recalled vehicles go unrepaired every year because owners move, sell the car or simply never open the letter. A software fix that takes minutes at a service visit is among the easiest recalls to close out, and Toyota and its dealers will be hoping the Sienna campaign is one of the quick ones.
