Jordan Syria Airstrikes Kill 7 After Church Attack as Border Crossing Shuts

Jordan Syria airstrikes on Monday killed at least seven people in southern Syria and pushed two neighbours that have long managed an uneasy border into their sharpest public dispute in years. Jordan said its warplanes hit what it called militant hideouts linked to a deadly church attack at home; Syria denied the operation had been coordinated with it, opened an investigation, and on Tuesday shut the only passenger and commercial crossing between the two countries.

Key Points

Jordan said its air force struck militant hideouts in southern Syria on Monday, October 26, in retaliation for a church attack that killed nine people in Jordan last Friday.
Syrian authorities said at least seven people, including three children and a woman, were killed in the strikes, with three others wounded; emergency teams responded to four sites in the countryside of Daraa and Sweida provinces.
Jordan said the operation was carried out in coordination with Damascus; Syria denied that, saying it had a "complete reservation" over strikes launched without prior coordination.
Three suspects — two brothers and their brother-in-law — were arrested in Jordan on Monday after a shootout, and firearms and ammunition were recovered.
Syria closed the Nassib border crossing with Jordan on Tuesday, suspending passenger and commercial traffic in both directions; Nassib is Jordan's only passenger and commercial crossing with Syria.

What Happened

Jordan's armed forces said on Monday that Royal Jordanian Air Force aircraft had struck sites in south-eastern Syria belonging to what it described as terrorist organisations. The military said the operation targeted the groups behind the Karak church attack, killing and wounding many of their members and destroying a number of their vehicles.

Syria's account of the same strikes was very different. The Syrian Civil Defense said in a preliminary report that seven people, including three children and a woman, were killed and three others wounded, with emergency teams responding to four sites in the countryside of Daraa and Sweida provinces. Daraa's health directorate gave the same breakdown. One early report put the toll at eight, a reminder of how fluid casualty counts are in the first hours after an air raid.

There was no immediate comment from Jordan on the Syrian casualty account. What is not in dispute is the diplomatic fallout. Syria's foreign ministry said early on Tuesday that it had conveyed its "complete reservation" to Jordan over military operations inside Syrian territory without prior coordination, and that Damascus had launched an investigation. Syria's border authority then announced that the Nassib crossing would close to passenger and commercial traffic in both directions, citing developments on the ground in Daraa province. On the Jordanian side the same crossing is known as Jaber.

Background: The Church Attack in Karak

The chain of events began on Friday, October 23, during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in Hamoud, about 120 kilometres (75 miles) southwest of Amman. Witnesses said gunmen opened fire for several minutes. At least nine people were killed and at least 34 wounded in an assault on a Christian minority community that shocked a country where such violence is rare.

Jordan is a relatively stable United States ally in the Middle East, and the attack prompted King Abdullah to order security forces to respond with an "iron fist", according to reports of the royal directive. Officials did not name any Islamist groups in connection with this attack, and no group has claimed responsibility for it.

Earlier on Monday, senior government security officials said Jordanian security forces had arrested two brothers and their brother-in-law after a shootout over the church violence. The suspects were found hiding in an abandoned house in al-Judayyda, in Karak governorate. They refused to surrender and attacked security forces, who returned fire and arrested all three after wounding them. No security personnel were injured, and firearms and ammunition were recovered.

Jordanian investigators believe the suspects behind the church attack were linked to terrorist groups operating in southern Syria — the link Amman cited when it ordered Monday's air strikes. Damascus, by contrast, has stressed the importance of field and security coordination in border areas.

Jordan Syria Airstrikes: What We Know So Far

The confirmed core is this: Jordan bombed targets in southern Syria on Monday; Syria says civilians, including children, were among the dead; the two governments disagree openly about whether the operation was coordinated; and the border between them is now closed.

The geography matters too. The strikes hit the countryside of Daraa and Sweida provinces, near the Jordanian border — the same borderland where smuggling networks and armed groups have long operated. Nassib is not a minor checkpoint: it is the only crossing between the two countries that handles both passengers and cargo. Closing it halts trade and travel in both directions, and signals that Damascus is willing to pay an economic price to register its protest.

Reactions and Quotes

Jordan's Director of Public Security, Major-General Obeidallah al-Maaytah, said the arrested suspects appeared to have no links to other cells. "God willing, they only represent themselves," he said. Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya added: "The file has not yet been closed; investigations are still ongoing. As of today, there are no indications of any links between them and other cells." The two officials said the country would not tolerate extremist terrorism, and that the suspects, who lived near Hamoud, will face justice.

From Damascus, the message was one of formal objection rather than escalation — so far. The Syrian foreign ministry's statement of "complete reservation", its investigation, and its insistence on joint security coordination in border areas all point to a government demanding a say over what happens on its side of the frontier. Syria also expressed solidarity with the families affected by the strikes.

Beyond the two capitals, the episode lands in a region already on edge. The United States counts Jordan among its closest Arab partners, and any sustained Jordan-Syria confrontation would complicate a Middle East already crowded with crises.

Why It Matters

This story matters for three reasons. First, civilians are dead on both sides of the border now: nine people at a church funeral in Jordan, and at least seven more, including children, in Syria. Retaliation that kills children risks creating the very grievances that armed groups feed on.

Second, the closure of Nassib turns a security incident into an economic one. Truck drivers, traders, families and aid flows all use that crossing. Every day it stays shut costs money and patience on both sides, and it gives Damascus a lever it can keep pulling — or release as a gesture.

Third, the open disagreement over coordination exposes a gap in trust. If Jordan believed it had Damascus's blessing and Syria says it did not, then the channels meant to prevent exactly this kind of miscalculation did not work — the most worrying part of the story.

What Happens Next

The immediate questions are practical. How long will Nassib stay closed? Will Syria's investigation produce a public account that differs further from Jordan's? Will Jordan's investigation establish a firmer link between the arrested suspects and groups in southern Syria — or remain an assertion Damascus rejects?

Watch, too, for whether the strikes continue. Jordan described Monday's operation as a completed retaliation. If there are no further strikes, the episode may settle into a tense diplomatic standoff over the crossing. If there are more, the risk of a cycle — attack, retaliation, counter-retaliation — rises sharply, and with it the risk to civilians living near the border.

The next statements from Amman and Damascus — and whether either side picks up the phone — will say a great deal about whether this crisis cools or deepens.
