House Speaker Mike Johnson has issued his bluntest warning yet of the 2026 midterm campaign, telling voters in a USA Today opinion piece published Friday, October 30, that a Democratic victory on November 3 would hand unprecedented power to socialists and put the American system itself at risk. With just three days until Election Day and a record number of ballots already cast, the Louisiana Republican framed the midterms not as a routine referendum on the president, but as a choice between two fundamentally different visions for the country. "One seeks to preserve and strengthen the foundations that made our nation great, while the other seeks to tear them down," Johnson wrote. "One wants to build, the other to destroy."

Key Points

• Speaker Mike Johnson's USA Today op-ed, published Friday, October 30, warns that a Democratic midterm win would cede "unprecedented power" to a growing socialist cadre inside the Democratic Party.
• Johnson argues a "far-left socialist insurgency" has overwhelmed the Democratic Party's centrist wing, forcing even old-guard Democrats in Congress to "bend the knee to the socialists."
• He touts the Republican record in the House, including the Working Families Tax Cuts, a nationwide school choice programme, Trump Accounts for newborns, and $1.6 trillion in spending cuts.
• Johnson points to violent riots in France, including the torching of a historic town hall in Limoges, as a "dark harbinger" of what he says could happen in the United States if Democrats retake the House.
• The warning lands as polls show Democrats ahead nationally, early voting has already passed a record 47.9 million ballots, and President Donald Trump returns to the trail for rallies in Kansas and Iowa on Sunday, November 1.

What Happened

Johnson's piece, headlined "Speaker Johnson: GOP has delivered. Don't throw it away," arrived on the Friday before the final weekend of a midterm campaign that will decide control of the House and Senate for the last two years of President Donald Trump's presidency. The Speaker, who represents Louisiana's 4th Congressional District, used the column to make two arguments at once: that House Republicans have delivered historic results with what he calls the slimmest House majority since the Great Depression, and that the Democratic Party has moved so far left that its victory would empower a movement hostile to the free market system itself.

"Throughout our nation's history, midterm elections have normally been a referendum on the president. But these are not normal times," Johnson wrote. "In these pivotal midterms on Nov. 3, voters face a much larger choice between two completely different visions for America." That framing is a deliberate break from the usual midterm script, in which the party holding the White House typically loses ground. Johnson's message to Republican voters is that 2026 is different, and that the stakes go beyond the normal swing of the political pendulum.

The column's sharpest passage targets the Democratic Socialists of America, the left-wing organisation whose summer platform Johnson describes in stark terms. "DSA is proud of the platform it published, calling for eradicating our borders and prisons, granting mass amnesty to illegal immigrants in perpetuity, abolishing the Senate, and replacing both the presidency and the Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary handpicked by a DSA-run Congress," he wrote. He added that it is "not just the fringes of the party embracing these insane ideas," arguing that top Democrats in Congress are welcoming DSA-backed candidates into their "big tent."

Johnson then quoted veteran Democratic strategist James Carville, writing that Carville "admitted he'd rather Republicans keep the House than Democrats win it by five, because his party would be 'hostage to the DSA.'" Johnson's verdict was brief: "On this, Carville is right."

Background and Context

Johnson's warning comes at the end of a campaign dominated by affordability, immigration, and the aftermath of the longest government shutdown in American history, which Johnson blames on Democrats. In his column, he writes that "despite Democrats forcing three government shutdowns, including the longest in U.S. history, Republicans delivered historic results in two years." Democrats, for their part, have blamed Republicans for the shutdowns and have campaigned heavily on the cost of living, health care, and what they describe as Republican overreach.

The Speaker's record claim rests on a series of measures he lists in the column. The Working Families Tax Cuts, he writes, delivered "an average $10,900 boost in take-home pay for a family of four through no tax on tips and overtime, a bigger standard deduction, an expanded child tax credit and tax relief for buyers of American-made cars." He also cites the first-ever nationwide school choice programme, the launch of Trump Accounts, investment accounts that grow with the stock market for children born between 2025 and 2028, $1.6 trillion in cuts to what he calls wasteful federal spending, and an energy policy he describes as unleashing American energy dominance after years of Democratic efforts to choke off domestic production.

"As a result, more than a million private-sector jobs have been added, and American manufacturing is coming home as pro-growth policies work in concert with President Donald Trump's reshoring agenda," Johnson wrote. Those figures are the Speaker's own account of the Republican record, and Democrats dispute both the size of the benefits and who received them, arguing that the tax package favoured the wealthy and that working families are still squeezed by prices.

Johnson has spent the closing weeks of the campaign dismissing polls that show his party trailing. In an October 25 appearance on Fox News, he called polls showing large Democratic leads "wrong," saying they underestimate Republican voters. He said he had visited 21 states and 39 districts in three weeks and found enthusiasm comparable to 2024. The polling picture he faces is nonetheless difficult: a Reuters/Ipsos survey released October 26 gave Democrats a nine-point lead among likely voters, and Emerson College Polling's final national survey, released Friday, October 30, put Trump's approval rating at 37 percent, a new low in that pollster's series. Early voting has also surged, with the University of Florida's Election Lab recording 47.9 million early ballots by midday on October 30, passing the previous midterm record of 45.9 million set in 2022.

Midterm Elections 2026: The Stakes as Johnson Frames Them

The heart of Johnson's argument is cultural and institutional as much as economic. He writes that under President Joe Biden, Democrats "took long strides further left," and he lists grievances that have become staples of Republican campaign rhetoric: promises to defund the police, an open border, gender policies in schools, and mandates and spending he says produced 40-year-high inflation that "crushed family budgets." "As I've campaigned across the country, I've met thousands of Americans who will never forget what a disaster the Democrats made of public policy," he wrote. "They remember being silenced as left-wing ideologues wrecked their schools and communities, censored their speech, mocked their faith and traditions, and tried to erase our history."

From there, Johnson turns to France as his cautionary tale. "For a preview of where that road leads, just look at France," he wrote, describing "the violent riots rocking the country, the smashing of buildings and cars, the looting of hundreds of shops, the torching of a historic town hall in Limoges." He attributes the unrest to "decades of catastrophically misguided policy choices: lax immigration and border enforcement, suffocating regulation and government largesse that has stagnated growth, stifled innovation and driven debt to a staggering 119% of GDP." News reports of the French protests have described them as nationwide demonstrations over the cost of living, a context Johnson does not dwell on, preferring to present the scenes as the work of "far-left radicals who hate" France.

"The chaos unfolding in France is a dark harbinger of what could happen here if Democrats take back the House," Johnson wrote. "What generations built over centuries can be torn down in a few years, but only if we allow it. May God help us not make that mistake." The closing is characteristic of Johnson's style, blending policy argument with moral warning, and it is plainly aimed at turning out conservative voters who might otherwise sit out a midterm.

Reactions and Quotes

Johnson's column drew immediate attention because it is one of the most direct attempts by a Republican leader to nationalise the midterms around socialism rather than around the president's record alone. "A Democratic victory in the midterms would inevitably cede unprecedented power to this growing socialist cadre, whose stated aim is to remake the party and end the free market system," he wrote, a line that Republican campaigns are likely to recycle in the final days.

Democrats have not, so far, responded to the column directly, but their closing message has been built around a very different set of claims: that Republicans have failed on affordability, that their tax and spending policies favour the wealthy, and that Democratic candidates offer a check on the Trump administration. Forecasters remain divided on how far that message will carry. Allan Lichtman, the historian known for his "Keys to the White House" model, has predicted Democrats will win both chambers on November 3, while Republican leaders, including Senator Ted Cruz, have warned that even Texas could be closer than expected.

Johnson himself sought to pre-empt the polling argument in his column. "They won't be discouraged by unreliable polls or by pundits declaring that these elections are destined to be won by the party opposing the president," he wrote of the voters he has met on the trail. "House Republicans understand that to win the midterms, we need to defy history. But we also understand that 2026 is different. It presents an unprecedented and fateful question: Will we reject and tear down the American system, or will we keep building on what made our nation the most exceptional the world has ever seen?"

Why It Matters

The column matters for three reasons. First, it shows how Republican leadership wants the final weekend framed: not as a judgment on the Trump administration, which polls suggest would be unfavourable, but as a judgment on the Democratic Party's left flank. If that framing takes hold, it could energise conservative turnout in House districts where Republican incumbents are under pressure. Second, it is a signal of how Johnson intends to govern, or to campaign for the Speaker's gavel, if Republicans hold the House: as the defender of the tax, school choice, and energy record he lists, against a Democratic majority he portrays as captive to its socialist wing.

Third, the column raises the temperature of a campaign already marked by sharp rhetoric on both sides. Describing a rival party's victory as the end of the free market system, and its leading figures as radicals bent on tearing the country down, leaves little room for the post-election cooperation that divided government usually requires. If Democrats do win the House, Johnson's words will be remembered as the opening shot of two years of confrontation. If Republicans hold on, they will be cited as proof that the socialist warning worked.

There is also a practical consequence for voters still deciding. The midterms will determine whether Trump can advance the second half of his legislative agenda, whether House investigations shift into Democratic hands, and how the final two years of his presidency are defined. Johnson's column is, in effect, his closing argument that the House Republican majority, however slim, has earned another two years.

What Happens Next

The final weekend of the campaign is already taking shape. Trump is scheduled to return to the trail on Sunday, November 1, for rallies in Kansas and Iowa that were restored after a brief cancellation, and both parties are pouring resources into get-out-the-vote operations in the battleground House districts that will decide the majority. Early voting continues through the weekend in many states, and the record 47.9 million early ballots already cast suggest turnout could rival or exceed 2022.

On Tuesday, November 3, voters will decide all 435 House seats, a third of the Senate, and dozens of governorships and state offices. Results in the closest House races may not be known on election night, and both parties have already prepared legal teams for recounts and challenges. Johnson, if Republicans hold the House, is expected to seek another term as Speaker; if they lose it, his column will stand as a marker of the argument that failed, and the contest for Republican leadership in the minority will begin immediately.

For now, the Speaker's message is simple, and it is the one his party will carry into the final 72 hours: Republicans have built, Democrats would tear down, and voters should not throw the majority away.
