Tech stocks slumped across Asia on Friday as the rout that wiped about $500 billion from Google parent Alphabet's market value spread around the world, deepening a sell-off driven by mounting investor doubts about the payoff from the artificial intelligence spending boom. Shares in Tokyo and Seoul fell sharply, chipmakers tumbled, and money poured into government bonds and safe-haven currencies in a classic flight to safety.

The selling followed a brutal session on Wall Street, where Alphabet fell 12.6 percent and slipped further after hours, while Intel plunged 23 percent in aftermarket trading and Amazon dropped 7 percent as both companies burned through cash to fund their AI ambitions. Nasdaq 100 futures fell a further 1.4 percent, signalling more pain ahead for US technology shares when American markets reopen.

Key Points

• Alphabet fell 12.6 percent on Wall Street, wiping about $500 billion from its market value as heavy AI spending pushed its cash flow negative.
• Intel plunged 23 percent in aftermarket trading and Amazon fell 7 percent, dragging Nasdaq 100 futures down 1.4 percent.
• South Korea's KOSPI slumped 5 percent and Japan's Nikkei fell 3 percent, while China's CSI300 headed for its largest monthly fall in a decade.
• Government bonds surged, with the 10-year US Treasury yield falling to 4.91 percent, its biggest monthly drop since December 2023.
• The Bank of Japan was expected to hold interest rates later on Friday, capping a week of major central bank meetings.

What Happened

The latest leg of the sell-off began on Thursday in New York, when Alphabet suffered its steepest one-day fall on record after reporting third-quarter results that disappointed investors. Revenue of $127.6 billion missed expectations, and free cash flow turned negative by $9.1 billion as the company poured money into data centres, chips and other AI infrastructure. The Nasdaq fell 1.43 percent to 26,171.04, the S&P 500 slipped 0.36 percent to 7,715.80, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average eased 0.35 percent to 52,291.94.

After the closing bell, the mood darkened further. Intel shares plunged 23 percent in aftermarket trading and Amazon fell 7 percent, as investors punished both companies for burning through cash even as they promised huge AI investments. The moves sent Nasdaq 100 futures down 1.4 percent and set up a grim start to Friday trading in Asia, where chipmakers led the declines.

In Seoul, the KOSPI slumped 5 percent, taking its October fall to more than 17 percent. In Tokyo, the Nikkei fell 3 percent. In China, the blue-chip CSI300 index headed for its largest monthly fall in a decade, after nearly four months of AI stocks sliding on fears that a slowdown in demand for chips and data-centre equipment could crush revenues. Nerves were also frayed by a potentially record-breaking hack at Binance, the world's biggest cryptocurrency exchange, which drove down bitcoin, other cryptocurrencies and shares in rival exchange Coinbase.

Background/Context

The sell-off caps a month in which the AI trade, the engine of the stock market's rise for much of the past two years, has gone into reverse. Hyperscale technology companies are on course to spend roughly $800 billion on capital expenditure in 2026, much of it on AI data centres, custom chips and power capacity. Meta alone has unveiled a $95 billion fundraising programme, while Amazon has budgeted about $220 billion of capital spending for the year and Microsoft has warned of its own heavy outlays.

For a long time, investors cheered that spending as a bet on future dominance. The mood changed this earnings season as cash flows turned negative and guidance failed to keep pace with the scale of the outlays. Alphabet's swing to negative free cash flow became the symbol of the shift: a company generating enormous profits was suddenly spending more cash than it took in. Amazon's third-quarter results told a similar story, with net income of $20.69 billion on sales of $201.94 billion, while its shares fell more than 5 percent after hours on a cautious outlook.

The Federal Reserve's decision on Wednesday to hold interest rates at 3.75 to 4.00 percent, with no firm signal about when it might need to raise them next, added to the rush into bonds. US weekly jobless claims had fallen to 194,000, near 57-year lows, underlining a resilient labour market, but that strength did little to calm equity investors worried about valuations.

Tech Stocks Slump: Why the AI Spending Boom Is Spooking Investors

The central question now facing markets is no longer whether the AI build-out can be financed, but whether shareholders will earn an adequate return on the enormous capital being deployed. That was the blunt assessment of Pepperstone analyst Chris Weston, who said: "The market isn't necessarily questioning whether the AI buildout can be financed. It's increasingly questioning whether shareholders will earn an adequate return on the enormous capital being deployed."

The doubt cuts to the heart of the AI investment case. Data centres take years to build and even longer to fill with paying customers, while the chips inside them risk becoming obsolete as new generations arrive. Companies argue they cannot afford to fall behind, and that under-investing would be the bigger risk. Investors, however, are beginning to ask for evidence that today's spending will turn into tomorrow's profits, and the latest earnings season has not provided enough of it.

Bond markets told the same story of caution. Benchmark 10-year US Treasury yields fell by more than 7 basis points in Tokyo trading on Friday to 4.91 percent, a fall of about 37 basis points through October and the largest one-month drop since December 2023. Two-year yields dropped by more than 8 basis points to 4.57 percent, and Fed funds futures rallied as traders dialled back some expectations for US rate rises. Yields fall when bond prices rise, so the moves showed investors actively buying safety.

Reactions/Quotes

Market strategists framed the rout as a repricing of the AI trade rather than a verdict that artificial intelligence itself had failed. "The market isn't necessarily questioning whether the AI buildout can be financed," Weston said. "It's increasingly questioning whether shareholders will earn an adequate return on the enormous capital being deployed."

In Asia, attention turned to the Bank of Japan, which was expected to leave rates on hold later on Friday in a decision capping a week of major central bank meetings. "Key to watch will be how BOJ characterise the recent global bond market volatility," said Howe Chung Wan, head of Asian fixed income at Principal Asset Management. "Investors would watch for how the moves influenced the bank's assessment of the current status of monetary policy, and whether it remains accommodative or is close to approaching neutral," he added. "This will guide the market for the pace and extent of further tightening in 2027."

Currency markets reflected the same risk-averse mood. The yen strengthened about 0.2 percent to 157.47 per dollar, the Swiss franc held near a one-month high at 0.8213 to the dollar, and the euro inched up 0.1 percent to $1.1194. Gold slipped 0.6 percent to $3,997.39 an ounce as higher oil prices and robust US inflation data strengthened the case for another Federal Reserve rate rise later this year, with traders pricing about a 75 percent chance of a December hike.

Why It Matters

The sell-off matters far beyond the technology sector because a handful of mega-cap companies now dominate stock indices, pension funds and retirement savings across the United States. When Alphabet alone can lose $500 billion of value in a single session, the shock waves reach index funds held by millions of ordinary savers, as well as the broader economy through wealth effects and business confidence.

It also matters for the AI race itself. If investors refuse to fund ever-larger spending rounds, companies may be forced to slow data-centre construction, delay chip orders and cut back on hiring, with knock-on effects for suppliers, energy providers and construction firms. Conversely, if the spending continues and the returns eventually arrive, today's sell-off may look like a healthy correction in an otherwise durable boom. The next few earnings reports, and the Federal Reserve's December decision, will help decide which story is right.

For American households, the immediate impact is indirect but real. Falling share prices dent retirement accounts, while rising bond prices push yields lower, easing borrowing costs at the margin. The tension between those forces, and between strong jobs data and shaky markets, is exactly what the Federal Reserve must weigh when it meets again in December.

What Happens Next

Traders will watch the US market open for signs of whether Friday's Asian falls mark capitulation or merely the next stage of the correction. Nasdaq futures already point lower, and any further heavy selling in Alphabet, Amazon or the chipmakers would confirm that the rout has further to run. The Bank of Japan's statement later on Friday will also be parsed for any hint that global bond volatility is changing its thinking on tightening in 2027.

Beyond Friday, the calendar offers several tests. The next Federal Reserve meeting in December looms large, with markets pricing roughly a three-in-four chance of a rate rise. Company guidance in the coming weeks will show whether AI spending plans are being trimmed, maintained or expanded. And the Binance hack fallout, which has already rattled crypto markets, will test whether digital-asset stress spills further into mainstream equities.

If the selling stabilises, bargain hunters may step in, arguing that the AI leaders remain enormously profitable and that one bad quarter does not break a decade-long trend. If it does not, the October slump, already the worst month in years for several Asian indices, could set the tone for a volatile end to 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Alphabet shares fall so sharply?
