US Jobless Claims Fall to 194,000 Near 57-Year Lows

US jobless claims fell again last week, edging closer to levels not seen since 1969 and underlining a labour market that is neither shedding workers quickly nor hiring them quickly. The latest weekly figures, released by the Labor Department on Thursday, October 29, 2026, showed new filings for unemployment benefits dropping to a seasonally adjusted 194,000 for the week ended October 24.

Key Points

Initial US jobless claims fell by 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 194,000 for the week ended October 24, 2026, beating the 199,000 forecast in a Reuters poll of economists.
Claims have stayed below 200,000 since mid-September and are close to the 189,000 level reached in mid-July, the lowest since 1969.
Continuing claims dropped by 21,000 to 1.701 million for the week ended October 17, a proxy for how easily people who lose work find new jobs.
The four-week moving average eased by 1,250 to 196,750, smoothing out week-to-week swings in the weekly series.
The Federal Reserve held rates at 3.75% to 4.00% on October 28, with Chair Kevin Warsh describing employment conditions as “quite positive” even as inflation stays elevated.

What Happened

The Labor Department reported that seasonally adjusted initial claims for state unemployment benefits declined by 1,000 from the previous week’s revised level. That earlier week was revised upward by 1,000, from 194,000 to 195,000, so the new reading of 194,000 represents a small but clear step down rather than a dramatic plunge.

Economists surveyed by Reuters had expected 199,000 claims, meaning the outturn came in 5,000 below consensus. On an unadjusted basis, actual initial claims under state programmes rose by 5,648, or 3.3%, to 178,851 — a reminder that seasonal adjustment matters at this time of year, when hiring and layoff patterns shift with the calendar.

The four-week moving average, which economists prefer for judging the trend because it irons out one-off spikes, fell by 1,250 to 196,750 from a revised 198,000. That average has now spent weeks in the high-190,000s, a range that, in normal times, would be read as a sign of a very tight labour market.

Continuing claims — the number of people still receiving benefits after their first week — fell by 21,000 to a seasonally adjusted 1.701 million for the week ended October 17. The seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate held steady at 1.1%. Continuing claims are watched closely because a rising total would suggest that laid-off workers are struggling to find new roles, while a falling total points the other way.

Background/Context

To understand why 194,000 matters, it helps to put the number in its longer context. The mid-July reading of 189,000 was the lowest since 1969, a period when the American workforce was far smaller. Staying within a few thousand of that mark, week after week, is therefore striking: in a labour force of well over 160 million people, fewer than 200,000 are newly filing for jobless benefits in a typical week.

Claims have now remained mostly below 200,000 since mid-September. That persistence is what has caught economists’ attention. A single low week can be noise — a holiday, a processing delay, a state reporting quirk. A run of low weeks is harder to dismiss, and it suggests that employers, for all their caution about new hiring, are not turning to layoffs in any large numbers.

The backdrop is a complicated one. The Federal Reserve left its benchmark overnight interest rate in the 3.75% to 4.00% range on Wednesday, October 28, while acknowledging that inflation “remains elevated.” September’s jobless rate stood at 4.2%, and the economy grew at a 3.4% annualised pace in the third quarter of 2026. Consumer prices, measured by the September personal consumption expenditures index, rose 3.6% from a year earlier. In other words, growth has held up and layoffs have stayed low, but price pressures have not yet been fully tamed.

That combination helps explain the “low-hire, low-fire” description now used by many economists. Firms are reluctant to expand headcount aggressively — in part, economists say, because the ongoing US-Israeli war with Iran is making employers hesitant to commit to new hiring — yet strong profits and resilient domestic demand are keeping layoffs near historic lows. Workers, in turn, are not quitting in large numbers, because they sense that finding a better job quickly is no longer guaranteed.

US Jobless Claims and the Low-Hire, Low-Fire Labour Market

The phrase “low-hire, low-fire” captures a market in balance but not in motion. In a classic boom, hiring surges and claims fall because few people lose jobs and many find new ones fast. In a classic downturn, claims spike as layoffs spread. The current picture is neither: layoffs are rare, but so is rapid hiring, and the result is a market that looks stable on the surface while feeling sluggish underneath for anyone actually trying to change jobs.

A Conference Board survey released on Tuesday added another piece to the puzzle, showing consumers more optimistic about the labour market in October. Optimism does not create jobs by itself, but it does influence spending — and spending, in turn, supports the domestic demand that economists credit with keeping layoffs low. If households keep spending, firms have less reason to cut staff even while they pause hiring.

Reactions/Quotes

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, speaking after the October rate decision, acknowledged the labour market’s stability in plain terms. On the employment side of the Fed’s dual mandate, he said, conditions are “quite positive.” The remark stopped short of declaring victory on jobs, but it framed the latest claims data as consistent with a labour market that is holding together rather than cracking.

Economists more broadly have described the market as remaining in a “low-hire, low-fire” state, according to Reuters’ reporting of the claims release. Their reasoning links two forces: strong profits and resilient domestic demand on one side, holding layoffs near historic lows, and geopolitical uncertainty — notably the ongoing US-Israeli war with Iran — on the other, making employers hesitant to increase headcount.

Why It Matters

Weekly jobless claims are one of the fastest official reads on the American economy. Unlike the monthly jobs report, which arrives weeks after the fact, claims are published every Thursday and cover the previous week. That timeliness is why markets, the Fed and employers all watch them: a sudden jump can be the first sign of a downturn, while a sustained low run can confirm that a slowdown feared by forecasters has not materialised.

This release matters for three groups in particular. First, for households: low layoffs mean fewer families facing a sudden loss of income, which supports spending and confidence heading into the holiday season. Second, for the Federal Reserve: stable employment gives it latitude to keep fighting inflation without fearing that it is about to trigger a wave of job losses. Third, for voters and policymakers days before the November 3 midterms: a labour market that looks resilient on paper, even if hiring feels slow, is a very different political backdrop from one in which claims are surging.

What Happens Next

The next weekly claims report will show whether 194,000 was another step toward the mid-July low or the start of a plateau in the mid-190,000s. A move back above 200,000 would not, on its own, signal trouble, but a run of readings above that line would suggest the low-claims phase is fading. A move toward or below 189,000 would put the series back at its lowest since 1969 and strengthen the case that layoffs remain exceptionally rare.

For the Federal Reserve, the path to its December meeting now runs through several more claims prints, the jobs report and fresh inflation data. A labour market that stays calm while inflation stays elevated keeps the case for a December increase alive. A labour market that starts to loosen, through either rising claims or weaker hiring, would complicate that case and push the debate toward holding rates for longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are US jobless claims?

They are the number of Americans filing for the first time for state unemployment benefits in a given week. The seasonally adjusted figure smooths out predictable calendar effects so that week-to-week changes reflect the underlying trend.

What did the latest report show?

Initial claims fell by 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 194,000 for the week ended October 24, 2026, below the 199,000 forecast in a Reuters poll. Continuing claims fell by 21,000 to 1.701 million for the week ended October 17.

Why is 194,000 described as near a 57-year low?

Because the lowest recent reading, 189,000 in mid-July, was the lowest since 1969. At 194,000, the latest figure sits only 5,000 above that mark, in a workforce far larger than in 1969.

What does “low-hire, low-fire” mean?

It describes a labour market in which employers are laying off very few workers but are also hiring slowly. Jobs look secure for those who have them, but finding a new job can take longer than in a hiring boom.

What happens next for interest rates?

The Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate at 3.75% to 4.00% on October 28, 2026, while noting inflation remains elevated. Economists expect a possible increase in December, depending on upcoming jobs, claims and inflation data.
