The Bodum French Press recall announced on Thursday, October 29, 2026, covers about 5.9 million coffee makers sold in the United States over more than five decades, after the glass carafes on some models broke during use and burned dozens of people. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Bodum USA recalled certain 8-cup and 12-cup French press coffee makers with replaceable glass carafes because a damaged or cracked carafe can break unexpectedly, posing a risk of serious burn injury from hot coffee. Bodum has identified 70 reports of carafes breaking during use, including 48 reports of burns to consumers, according to the commission's recall notice. The remedy is not a refund or a replacement coffee maker: Bodum is giving affected owners a free plastic stirring spoon and an extra warning label, and telling them to stop stirring with metal utensils and to stop using any cracked or damaged carafe.

What Happened

Bodum USA and the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the voluntary recall on Thursday, October 29, 2026, in a joint notice that also listed several other product recalls posted to the commission's website that day. The Bodum recall is by far the largest of the batch, covering about 5.9 million units — a figure that reflects how long these coffee makers have been on the American market, not a single recent production run. The affected products were sold nationwide from 1974 through October 2026, according to Daily Coffee News' summary of the CPSC notice, at Target, Walmart and coffee and home-goods stores, as well as through Amazon, Bodum's own website and other online retailers, at prices ranging from about $15 to $65.

The commission's description of the hazard is precise, and it matters for anyone who owns one of these coffee makers. The glass carafes can break unexpectedly during use if the glass is damaged or cracked, and one common cause of that damage is stirring with a metal spoon or another metal utensil. A metal spoon can nick or weaken the glass, and the carafe may then fail during a later brew, when it is full of hot coffee. The CPSC notice, as reported by Scripps' consumer team, puts the incident count plainly: 70 reports of carafes breaking during use, including 48 reports of burns. No deaths were reported in the summaries reviewed for this article, and the commission did not describe the severity of the burns in detail.

Bodum, a family-owned Danish company founded in 1944, framed the recall as a safety-education measure as much as a product action. "As a family-owned business, Bodum takes particular pride in making household products — including coffee and tea makers — that are both high quality and affordable," the company said in its October 29 statement. "Given the emphasis we put on product safety, we take any reports of injury extremely seriously. That is why we are announcing a voluntary recall of certain Bodum 8- and 12-Cup French Press Coffee Makers with replaceable glass carafes in cooperation with the CPSC." The company stressed that the rate of reported incidents is extremely low relative to the millions of units sold over decades, but said the recall would further encourage safe use.

Background/Context

The French press is one of the simplest coffee makers ever sold, and that simplicity is part of why this recall is so large. A French press is a glass beaker in a metal frame with a plunger and mesh filter: coarse coffee grounds steep in hot water, the plunger presses them down, and the coffee is poured. Bodum has been, in its own words, the North American market leader in this category for decades, and its Chambord model — the classic chrome-framed press with the black lid knob — is the design most coffee drinkers picture when they hear the words "French press." The eight recalled lines span the company's range, from the entry-level Brazil and Kenya presses to the flagship Chambord, and the recall covers both the 8-cup (1-litre) and 12-cup (1.5-litre) sizes.

Glass carafes are the known weak point of the design. Unlike a steel or plastic brewer, a glass beaker can be chipped by a spoon, knocked against a tap, or weakened by repeated heating and cooling, and a chip that looks harmless can become a fracture under the stress of boiling water and a plunger's pressure. That is why Bodum's instructions have long warned against metal utensils — but instructions buried in a box, for a product bought in 1974 or 1994 or 2014, are easy to lose or forget. The recall's remedy is designed around exactly that gap: a plastic spoon that cannot nick the glass, and a fresh warning label placed where the owner will see it every morning.

The scale of the recall also reflects a quirk of American product-safety law. When a manufacturer and the CPSC agree on a recall, the notice covers every unit of the affected models still in consumers' hands, however old. A French press bought in the 1980s and still brewing every morning counts the same as one bought last week. That is why a 5.9-million-unit figure, which sounds like a single factory's output, is in fact the accumulated stock of half a century of sales. The same day's CPSC batch shows the contrast: DREO recalled 338,800 space heaters after 17 reports of ignition, Harkla recalled 25,541 children's sensory swings after 29 reports of ceiling hooks separating, and other recalls covered tens of thousands of units. Bodum's recall dwarfs them all because the product itself has been a kitchen staple for generations.

Bodum French Press Recall: Which Models Are Affected and What Owners Should Do

Owners can identify an affected coffee maker by its size and model name. The recall covers Bodum 8-cup and 12-cup French press coffee makers with replaceable glass carafes from the Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya lines. The Bodum name appears on the frame and inner lid of most affected models and is engraved on the glass carafes along with product warnings, according to the CPSC summary. The coffee makers were manufactured in Portugal and Thailand and imported by New York-based Bodum USA.

The advice for owners is immediate and simple, and it does not require waiting for the free spoon to arrive. First, stop using metal spoons or any metal utensils to stir coffee in the glass carafe — use wood or plastic instead. Second, inspect the carafe before every use and do not use it if it is cracked, chipped or otherwise damaged. Third, request the remedy: Bodum is providing a free Bodum-designed plastic stirring spoon and an additional warning label, which consumers can order through Bodum's dedicated recall website or by calling 888-879-8213 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday. Going forward, new units of these models will be sold with the plastic spoon and the extra warning label included.

What owners should not expect is a refund or a new coffee maker. This is a repair-and-warn recall, not a return-and-replace one, and Bodum's statement is explicit that the remedy is the spoon and the label. That distinction will disappoint some owners — a cracked carafe on a decades-old press is, in practice, a press that can no longer be used safely — but it is the remedy the company and the commission agreed on, and it targets the mechanism the CPSC identified: metal utensils damaging glass that then breaks under heat and pressure. Owners whose carafes are already damaged should stop using them entirely rather than waiting for the spoon.

Reactions/Quotes

Bodum's own statement, issued on October 29, is the fullest on-the-record account from the company so far. "While the rate of reported incidents involving carafe breakage during use is extremely low, especially considering that Bodum has sold millions of these products in the U.S. for decades, this recall will further encourage the safe use of our French Press Coffee Makers," the company said. It added that the company has "used that formula to benefit millions of families worldwide for the past 72 years" and that it prides itself on products that "meet or exceed all relevant safety standards." The statement does not address refunds or replacements, and Bodum did not, in the materials reviewed, give a figure for how many owners it expects to claim the free spoon.

Consumer coverage of the recall has been brisk, with local Scripps stations and coffee-industry press publishing explainers within hours of the CPSC posting. The tone of that coverage is practical rather than alarmist: the recall is being presented as a check-your-kitchen story, in the same week that the FDA classified a plant-based butter recall as Class II and other food recalls circulated. That framing fits the facts — 48 burns across 5.9 million units over 52 years is a low incident rate — but it should not be read as a reason to ignore the warning. A glass carafe full of near-boiling coffee that fails in the hand is a serious burn risk, and the commission's warning is unambiguous: a damaged carafe can break unexpectedly during use.

Why It Matters

This recall matters because of the sheer number of kitchens it touches. A 5.9-million-unit recall for a product sold since 1974 means the affected coffee makers are not sitting in a warehouse — they are on counters, in cupboards and in holiday rentals across the country, many of them bought so long ago that their owners have no memory of the original instructions. The French press is also a product people use half-awake, first thing in the morning, with boiling water, which is exactly when a warning about cracked glass and metal spoons is most likely to be overlooked. A recall that puts a plastic spoon and a fresh label into those kitchens is a small intervention with a large potential payoff.

It also matters as a reminder of how product-safety recalls actually work. The headline number — 5.9 million — is not a sign that 5.9 million coffee makers are defective. It is the total population of the affected models, most of which will never break. The risk concentrates in carafes that are already damaged, and the remedy concentrates on the behaviour that damages them. That is a useful distinction for readers who see a recall number and wonder whether to throw a beloved kitchen tool away: check the carafe, change the spoon, claim the free remedy, and keep brewing — or retire the press if the glass is already chipped.

What Happens Next

The next step for owners is to claim the remedy and change one habit. Order the free plastic stirring spoon and warning label through Bodum's recall website or by calling 888-879-8213 on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern, and in the meantime switch to a wooden or plastic spoon and inspect the carafe before each brew. Bodum says future sales of these models will include the spoon and label, so new buyers should find the safer setup in the box.

For the wider recall landscape, the Bodum notice is a reminder to check the CPSC's listings regularly: the same October 29 batch included space heaters, children's swings, dressers, gas boilers and microwave grills, each with its own hazard and remedy. Readers who own any of those products should check the commission's site for their model numbers. And for Bodum, the test of this recall will be how many of those 5.9 million owners actually claim the spoon — the remedy only works if it reaches the kitchens where the old metal spoon is still in the drawer.
