Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is accused of posting a fake State Department press release on social media to explain away the end of her job as a special envoy, after the department itself said the statement was never authorised and the letterhead it carried was fabricated. The allegation, first reported by Politico and later confirmed to CBS News by a State Department official, has turned a quiet demotion inside the Trump administration into a fresh controversy about honesty at the top of government, just days before the November 3 midterm elections.

Noem has not publicly addressed the accusation. Neither she nor the State Department responded to Politico's requests for comment, and no disciplinary action has been announced. But the episode has revived scrutiny of a political career already marked by a forced exit from the cabinet in March 2026, a $220 million advertising campaign, and the fatal shootings of two US citizens during an immigration crackdown in Minnesota.

Key Points

• Kristi Noem posted a statement on X on October 16, 2026, on apparent State Department letterhead, saying her special envoy job "was always a six-month appointment" and that she remains a senior adviser.
• Politico first reported that department leadership never signed off on the statement, quoting a source as saying: "This was not a press release put out by the State Department."
• A State Department official later confirmed to CBS News that the statement used fabricated letterhead and was not an official department press release.
• The department had announced that Noem's tenure as special envoy for the Shield of the Americas had ended, and that she now serves as a senior adviser to Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.
• Noem was fired as Homeland Security secretary on March 5, 2026, and replaced by Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin; she has not publicly responded to the fake-release accusation.

What Happened

According to Politico's NatSec Daily newsletter, which broke the story on October 23, 2026, Noem shared the disputed statement on X on October 16. It was designed to look like an official department release, complete with State Department letterhead, and it carried a message plainly aimed at shaping how her departure would be read: her appointment as special envoy had "always" been a six-month posting, and she was staying on at the department as a senior adviser.

The timing mattered. Rumours had been spreading that Noem had fallen out of favour inside the administration, and the department had just announced that her time as special envoy had come to an end. The statement she posted pushed back against the impression of a demotion, presenting the move as routine and pre-planned.

But two people familiar with Noem's work at the State Department told Politico a very different story. Department leadership, they said, never signed off on the statement. One source went further, accusing Noem of going rogue and creating the letterhead herself so she could post the document online. A State Department official later confirmed the claim to CBS News, saying the statement Noem posted to both her official envoy account and her personal X account was made using fabricated State Department letterhead and was not an official department press release.

There are other loose ends that have fed the controversy. After the envoy role ended, Noem's social media profiles still listed her as special envoy, and her X biography linked to the Department of Homeland Security, the agency she had been fired from in March, rather than to the State Department where she now works.

Background and Context

Noem's path to this controversy began with a dramatic cabinet exit. President Donald Trump removed her as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security on March 5, 2026, following a congressional hearing on March 3 at which she faced intense questioning, including from Republican Senator John Kennedy, about a taxpayer-funded advertising campaign promoting the administration's deportation agenda.

Her tenure at Homeland Security had already drawn fierce criticism over immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota, where federal officers fatally shot two US citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, during Operation Metro Surge in late January and February 2026. Critics also pointed to the detention of a five-year-old boy in Minnesota and to a $220 million advertising campaign, one ad of which showed a glammed-up Noem on horseback against the backdrop of Mount Rushmore in her home state of South Dakota, telling immigrants: "Break our laws, we'll punish you."

Trump moved swiftly to replace her, naming Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin as the next Homeland Security secretary, effective March 31, 2026, and reassigning Noem to a new role as special envoy for the Shield of the Americas, a US-led security partnership with countries in the Western Hemisphere. The envoy post was presented at the time as a fresh assignment. Inside the department, however, the move from special envoy to senior adviser is widely viewed as a step down, which is exactly the impression the disputed statement seemed designed to push back against.

The State Department has confirmed that Noem's appointment as special envoy has expired and that she now works as a senior adviser to Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, the same official she reported to while serving as envoy.

Kristi Noem Fake Press Release: What the Reports Say

The core of the story rests on two layers of reporting. Politico, citing two people familiar with Noem's work at the department, reported that the release was not authorised and that Noem was accused of creating the letterhead herself. CBS News then obtained its own confirmation from a State Department official that the letterhead was fabricated and the document was not an official release.

What has not been established is who, if anyone, helped produce the document, or whether the department intends to take any action over it. Posting a document that falsely appears to come from a federal agency is not a small matter: official letterhead signals that a statement speaks for the government, and the State Department controls what goes out under its name. Whether the department takes any action over the post remains to be seen, and no investigation or sanction has been publicly announced.

It is also important to be precise about what is alleged. Noem is accused of posting an unauthorised statement on fabricated letterhead; she has not been charged with any offence, and the reporting does not claim that the underlying facts in the statement, that her envoy appointment ended and that she remains a senior adviser, were themselves false. The dispute is about the document's authenticity and authority, not about her current job title.

Reactions and Quotes

"This was not a press release put out by the State Department," one person familiar with Noem's work at the department told Politico, in the quote that has defined the story. The same source accused Noem of going rogue and creating the letterhead herself so she could post it online.

A State Department official later confirmed the claim to CBS News, saying the statement was made using fabricated State Department letterhead and was not an official department press release.

Noem herself has not publicly addressed the accusation, and neither she nor the State Department responded to requests for comment from Politico. The Independent reported that it had contacted the State Department for clarification about the authenticity of the release Noem shared.

The story has also drawn attention because of what it suggests about Noem's standing. The disputed statement said her special envoy job "was always a six-month appointment", a framing that presents a short, planned posting rather than a removal. The department's own announcement, that her tenure had ended and she would continue as a senior adviser, told a plainer story, and the gap between the two versions is now the subject of the controversy.

Why It Matters

The accusation matters for reasons that go beyond one former cabinet secretary's social media post. First, it touches the integrity of official communications: if a former senior official can put out a document that looks like it speaks for the State Department, it becomes harder for the public to tell what the government has actually said. Second, it lands in the final week before the midterm elections, when the Trump administration's record on immigration enforcement and cabinet management is already under intense scrutiny. Third, it follows a pattern of controversies around Noem's public communications, from the $220 million advertising campaign to the social media post now at issue.

There is also a practical question for the department: whether it will act. Departments guard their letterhead precisely because it carries the authority of the government. If an unauthorised use goes unanswered, it sets a precedent; if it is punished, it extends a saga the administration would plainly prefer to close. Either way, the decision will be watched closely by officials across government who manage public communications.

For Noem, the stakes are personal and political. She remains a prominent Trump-world figure, and the allegation that she fabricated an official-looking document is, if sustained, far more damaging than an ordinary communications misstep. Her silence so far leaves the reporting unchallenged, but it also leaves the central question unanswered: who made the letterhead, and why?

What Happens Next

Several questions will determine where this story goes. The State Department may clarify whether it is reviewing the matter or taking any action, and Noem may choose to respond publicly, as she has not yet done. Further reporting could establish how the document was produced and whether anyone else inside or outside the department was involved.

The episode may also surface in the closing days of the midterm campaign, where Democrats have already used the administration's immigration record as a line of attack and Republicans have sought to keep the focus on the economy and public safety. With voting on November 3, any further development, a statement from Noem, a department response, or new reporting, is likely to travel fast.

For now, the established facts are narrow but striking: a statement posted on October 16 on apparent State Department letterhead, a department that says it never authorised it, and a former cabinet secretary who has not explained it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kristi Noem accused of doing?

She is accused of posting a statement on X on October 16, 2026, on State Department letterhead, claiming her special envoy job was always a six-month appointment, when department leadership had never signed off on it. A State Department official confirmed to CBS News that the letterhead was fabricated and the document was not an official release.

Was the statement itself false?

The dispute is about the document's authenticity, not necessarily its content. The department confirmed that Noem's envoy appointment had ended and that she continues as a senior adviser to Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau. What is alleged to be fake is the official-looking release itself.

Why did Noem leave the Homeland Security Department?

Trump fired her as Homeland Security secretary on March 5, 2026, following a congressional hearing and intense scrutiny of her leadership during the immigration crackdown, including the fatal shootings of two US citizens in Minnesota and a $220 million advertising campaign. Senator Markwayne Mullin replaced her.

What was the Shield of the Americas role?

It was a special envoy post for a US-led security partnership with countries in the Western Hemisphere, given to Noem when she left Homeland Security. The State Department has said that appointment has now expired.

Has Noem responded to the accusation?

No, not publicly. Neither Noem nor the State Department responded to Politico's requests for comment, and Noem has not addressed the accusation on social media or elsewhere as of the latest reporting.
