Alphabet Q3 earnings delivered a split verdict on Wednesday, October 28, 2026: Google's parent company grew revenue by a quarter to $127.6 billion and more than doubled its cloud business, yet reported profit fell well short of Wall Street's expectations, sending its shares down about 7% in after-hours trading.

The third-quarter results, covering July through September, landed after the market close and immediately became the biggest test yet of whether the artificial intelligence boom is paying for itself. The headline numbers were strong almost everywhere except the bottom line, where an $8.7 billion loss on equity investments dragged earnings per share down to $2.12 from $2.87 a year earlier.

Key Points

• Alphabet Q3 earnings: revenue of $127.6 billion, up 25% year over year, narrowly below Wall Street's roughly $128 billion call.
• Google Cloud revenue jumped 103% to $30.7 billion, a record growth rate, as demand for AI infrastructure and Google's own TPU chips surged.
• Net income fell to $26.2 billion and earnings per share of $2.12 missed the $3.02 consensus, hit by an $8.7 billion net loss on equity securities.
• Alphabet spent $51.4 billion on property and equipment in the quarter, leaving free cash flow negative at minus $9.1 billion for a second straight quarter.
• Shares fell about 7% after hours; if the drop holds, the stock would be back in the red for 2026 despite a year of AI-driven gains.

What Happened

Alphabet filed its results with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on October 28, with the filing accepted at 4:01 p.m. Eastern time, and held its earnings call at 4:30 p.m. Eastern. Consolidated revenue came in at $127,577 million against $102,346 million in the same quarter of 2025, which the company described as its 13th consecutive quarter of double-digit revenue growth.

Operating income rose 30% to $40,576 million from $31,228 million, lifting the operating margin to 31.8%. But the profit story flipped below that line. Other income swung to an expense of $8,221 million from income of $12,759 million a year earlier, driven by the $8.7 billion net loss on equity securities. That loss reduced the tax provision by $1.9 billion, net income by $6.7 billion and diluted earnings per share by $0.55.

Investors reacted fast. Alphabet shares dropped about 7% in after-hours trading, with some reports putting the fall at 7.3%. The reaction echoed the caution that greeted other big technology results this season: strong growth is no longer enough on its own when the spending behind it keeps climbing.

Background/Context

The report arrived at the end of a crowded week for technology investors. Alphabet had been flagged in advance as the first of the week's big tests, with Amazon and Apple due to report on October 29, and the Federal Reserve holding interest rates steady earlier on October 28 in its final decision before the November 3 midterm elections.

It also followed a warning shot from Meta, whose shares fell after it unveiled a huge AI funding programme, and a wider debate about how the largest technology companies are paying for their data-centre build-outs. Across the industry, hyperscalers are on course to spend roughly $800 billion on capital expenditure in 2026, and Alphabet's own numbers show just how fast that bill is growing.

Alphabet's balance sheet tells the financing story. Total assets reached $1,003,312 million at September 30, up from $595,281 million at the end of 2025, while long-term debt rose to $125,102 million from $46,547 million. Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities totalled $265,098 million. During the quarter the company issued 12 million Class A shares for $4.3 billion and 24 million Class C shares for $8.1 billion under its at-the-market programme, with $27.6 billion still available, and raised $28.7 billion from senior unsecured notes. It bought back no stock in the quarter, against $11,504 million of repurchases in the third quarter of 2025.

Geographically, United States revenue rose 39% to $67,681 million, Europe, the Middle East and Africa grew 9% to $32,695 million, Asia-Pacific rose 12% to $19,906 million, and other Americas revenue increased 17% to $7,101 million. Alphabet ended the quarter with 204,757 employees, up from 190,167 a year earlier.

Alphabet Q3 Earnings: The Numbers in Detail

Google Services revenue increased 11% to $96,302 million. Within that, Google Search and other revenue rose 12% to $63,350 million, YouTube advertising revenue grew to $11,207 million from $10,261 million, Google Network revenue was $7,455 million, and total Google advertising revenue reached $82,012 million. Google subscriptions, platforms and devices, which includes hardware, the Play Store and non-advertising YouTube revenue, rose to $14,290 million from $12,870 million.

The standout was Google Cloud. Revenue of $30,709 million against $15,157 million a year earlier marked a 103% increase that the company called record growth, led by Google Cloud Platform across enterprise AI infrastructure and enterprise AI solutions as well as core cloud services. Sales of Google's TPU systems were also a meaningful contributor. Cloud operating income jumped to $11,121 million from $3,594 million a year earlier, while Google Services operating income was $39,157 million.

Other Bets, Alphabet's collection of longer-term projects, reported $372 million of revenue against $344 million a year earlier and widened its operating loss to $2,047 million from $1.4 billion. Alphabet-level activities recorded an operating loss of $7,655 million, which the company said mainly reflected shared artificial intelligence research and development costs.

On cash flow, net cash from operating activities was $42,290 million in the quarter, while purchases of property and equipment reached $51,355 million. Free cash flow, defined as operating cash flow less capital expenditure, was negative $9,065 million for the quarter, and $19,747 million on a trailing twelve-month basis. It was the second consecutive quarter of negative free cash flow.

Reactions/Quotes

Chief executive Sundar Pichai struck an upbeat tone on the underlying business. "We had a strong quarter and are now on a half-trillion dollar revenue run rate," he said. "Our deep full stack approach is driving momentum across the business, with Alphabet revenues growing 25% year-over-year."

On search, Pichai added: "Our AI investments are driving overall Search query growth, including commercial queries. In fact, our year-over-year query growth rate is the highest it has been in the last five years."

On the cloud surge, he said: "Google Cloud revenues grew 103%, powered by huge demand for our AI infrastructure and AI solutions. We're also seeing strong demand for our TPU systems across a wide range of customers."

Pichai also pointed to the scale of Alphabet's AI reach: its Gemini 4 Argon and Carbon models are now leading at the frontier, first-party model APIs are processing nearly 32 billion tokens per minute, more than four times the volume of a year ago, the Gemini app has reached one billion users, which he called the fastest-growing product in Google's history, and YouTube Music and Premium have passed 150 million subscribers globally, including trials.

The market's verdict was cooler. Analysts noted that the earnings miss was driven by the equity-securities loss rather than the operating business, but the combination of a revenue miss, heavy capital spending and no share buybacks in the quarter gave traders little reason to look past the headline profit number on the night.

Why It Matters

Alphabet's quarter captures the central tension of the AI investment cycle. Demand is real and enormous: cloud revenue doubling in a year, search queries growing at their fastest rate in five years, and a billion people using Gemini are not soft numbers. But the infrastructure behind them is extraordinarily expensive, and the bill is now showing up in negative free cash flow, rising debt and fresh share issuance rather than buybacks.

That matters beyond Alphabet. The company's results set the tone for Amazon and Apple the next day, and for a market that has already punished other big spenders this season. If investors start demanding proof that AI spending turns into durable profit, rather than just faster revenue growth, the whole sector's valuation debate changes. Alphabet's cloud profitability, with operating income tripling year over year, is its best answer so far, but the group-level profit miss shows how easily a single non-operating item can overshadow it.

For ordinary users, the numbers also explain the pace of change in Google's products. The same spending that pressures free cash flow is funding the AI features now woven into Search, YouTube and the Gemini app, and the company is betting that scale, with a billion Gemini users, will eventually pay for the build-out.

What Happens Next

Attention now turns to Amazon and Apple, which report on October 29, and to whether their results calm or deepen the market's worry about AI spending. Alphabet's own next test will be its capital expenditure guidance for 2027 and whether free cash flow turns positive again as the current wave of data-centre construction matures.

Alphabet's board also declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.22 per share on Class A, Class B and Class C common stock, payable December 14, 2026 to stockholders of record as of December 7, 2026. Traders will also watch whether the after-hours drop holds into regular trading, which would leave Alphabet shares in negative territory for 2026.

Longer term, the question is whether cloud growth can stay anywhere near triple digits. A 103% jump sets an almost impossible bar for the next comparison, and the company itself framed the quarter as record growth rather than a new normal. The coming quarters will show whether AI demand keeps compounding or whether this was the peak of the surge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What were Alphabet's Q3 2026 earnings?
