A Bronx fire killed a boy and left four members of his family in critical condition early on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after flames broke out in an 11th-floor apartment at the Patterson Houses complex in Mott Haven. About 130 fire and emergency medical personnel rushed to 320 Morris Avenue just after 12:50 a.m., rescued five people from the burning apartment and got the blaze under control by 2:05 a.m., according to the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY). A lithium-ion battery was found at the scene, but officials have not said whether it caused the fire, and the cause remains under investigation.

The five people rescued — two adults and three boys — were believed to be members of the same family, according to WABC, although the FDNY did not confirm their relationship. One boy died after being taken to Jacobi Hospital in critical condition. Another boy was also taken to Jacobi Hospital in critical condition, a third boy to Harlem Hospital, and a man and a 33-year-old woman to Lincoln Hospital, all in critical condition. Their names and ages have not been released.

Key Points

• Bronx fire: A boy has died and four family members are in critical condition after an early-morning fire at the Patterson Houses in Mott Haven, in the Bronx.
• The fire broke out in an 11th-floor apartment at 320 Morris Avenue, with about 130 FDNY and EMS personnel dispatched just after 12:50 a.m. on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
• Firefighters rescued five people — two adults and three boys, believed to be one family — and had the blaze under control by 2:05 a.m.
• The victims were taken to Jacobi Hospital, Harlem Hospital and Lincoln Hospital, all in critical condition; one boy later died at Jacobi Hospital.
• A lithium-ion battery was found at the scene and hazmat resources were deployed, but officials have not confirmed what started the fire.

What Happened

The call came in just after 12:50 a.m. on Wednesday, sending fire and EMS crews to 320 Morris Avenue, a residential tower in the Patterson Houses complex in Mott Haven. The fire was on the 11th floor, and the scale of the response — roughly 130 fire and EMS personnel — reflected both the height of the fire and the number of people reported trapped or hurt inside the apartment. NBC New York reported that crews responded shortly before 1 a.m., rescued five injured people and had the flames under control after nearly an hour of work.

Inside the apartment, firefighters found two adults and three boys. All five were carried out and rushed to hospitals across the city. One boy, taken to Jacobi Hospital in critical condition, did not survive. Another boy remained in critical condition at the same hospital, a third boy at Harlem Hospital, and a man and a 33-year-old woman at Lincoln Hospital, according to the New York Post's account of FDNY and police information. NBC New York described the boy who died as a teenager, and said police confirmed that one of the three boys did not survive his injuries.

Hazmat resources were deployed to the building because of the presence of a lithium-ion battery, NBC New York reported. The New York Post reported that a lithium-ion battery was found at the scene but that it was unclear whether it caused the blaze. That distinction matters: finding a battery in a burned apartment is not the same as establishing that the battery failed and started the fire. The FDNY's Bureau of Fire Investigation will examine the apartment, the battery and any device it belonged to before reaching a conclusion. No official cause had been announced in the first hours after the fire.

By 2:05 a.m., the fire was under control, roughly 75 minutes after the first dispatch. What happened to the other residents of the tower — whether any were displaced — had not been detailed in the first reports, and the FDNY had not confirmed the relationship between the five victims, beyond WABC's report that they were believed to be one family.

Background and Context

The Patterson Houses are a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) development in Mott Haven, in the South Bronx, a neighbourhood of tall brick towers that house thousands of New Yorkers. Fires in high-rise public housing carry a particular danger: smoke and heat rise through stairwells and shafts, upper floors are harder to reach and harder to leave, and elevators cannot be used during a fire.

The Bronx has suffered some of New York's worst apartment fires in recent years. The January 2022 Twin Parks fire in the borough, started by a malfunctioning space heater with an apartment door left open, filled a 19-storey building with smoke and killed more than a dozen people, many of them children.

The lithium-ion battery found at the scene also places the fire in the middle of one of New York's most persistent safety debates. Lithium-ion batteries power e-bikes, e-scooters and countless household devices, and when they fail they can erupt in intense, fast-spreading fires that are difficult to extinguish and produce thick, toxic smoke. The FDNY reported 277 lithium-ion battery fires across the city in 2024, compared with 268 in 2023, while deaths linked to such fires fell from 18 in 2023 to six in 2024. More recently, Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer and Representative Ritchie Torres wrote that the FDNY had reported 362 fires and five deaths this year among users of e-bikes, e-scooters and similar devices.

Bronx Fire and the Lithium-Ion Battery Question

If the investigation does trace the fire to a lithium-ion battery, it would join a long and grim catalogue. The Consumer Product Safety Commission's staff reported 367 lithium-ion battery-related fires resulting in 45 fatalities from 2017 through 2024 among micromobility products nationwide, according to the senators' letter. In New York, the city has banned the sale of uncertified batteries and devices and stepped up inspections of bike shops, yet fires have continued, including fires in homes, in shops and, increasingly, in sanitation trucks where discarded batteries are crushed.

The policy argument is now focused on the federal level. Gillibrand, Schumer and Torres, in their letter to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, urged the agency to complete a mandatory federal standard for lithium-ion batteries used in micromobility products, writing: "To prevent further destruction to our communities and protect lives, we urge the Consumer Product Safety Commission…to immediately work through stakeholder comments and swiftly complete the rulemaking process."

Reactions and Quotes

There was no immediate public statement from the mayor or the fire commissioner in the first reports of the fire, and officials had not named the victims or their family. The NYPD confirmed that one person had died and four others were critically injured, according to PIX11's reporting, while the FDNY provided the dispatch, response and hospital details carried by the New York Post, WABC and NBC New York.

The wider reaction, from lawmakers who have been pressing the battery issue for years, was already on the record before this fire. In their letter this month, Gillibrand, Schumer and Torres argued that only mandatory federal standards can keep cheap and defective batteries out of the American market.

Why It Matters

This fire matters for three reasons. First, and most importantly, a child is dead and four people are in critical condition, and a family in Mott Haven has been devastated in a single night. Second, the fire is a test of whether New York's hard-won progress on battery fires is holding: deaths fell sharply from 2023 to 2024, but the total number of fires has stayed high and risen again this year. Third, the fire lands in public housing, where residents have the least control over their building's systems and the least room to store devices safely.

What Happens Next

The FDNY's Bureau of Fire Investigation will determine the fire's origin and cause, including the role, if any, of the lithium-ion battery found at the scene. The NYPD will continue its own inquiries alongside the fire investigation, and hospitals will update the conditions of the four survivors. Officials are expected to release the victims' identities once families have been notified.

In the wider debate, the fire will add urgency to the pending federal battery standard and to the Senate's consideration of the Setting Consumer Standards for Lithium-Ion Batteries Act. US News Pulse will update this story as the investigation's findings and the victims' identities are confirmed.
