USA vs Canada women's hockey is back, and the stakes could hardly be higher for an exhibition game. Eight months after the Americans stunned Canada in overtime to win Olympic gold in Milan, the two great rivals meet again on Wednesday night, October 28, 2026, at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario, with puck drop at 7 p.m. ET.

Canada has waited since February for this rematch. The Canadians were less than two minutes from gold in Milan when American captain Hilary Knight scored the equaliser with 2:04 left in regulation, and Megan Keller then won it in sudden-death overtime to give the United States its first Olympic women's hockey gold since 2018. On Wednesday, Canada gets its first chance at revenge, in front of a home crowd just across the river from Detroit.

Key Points

• USA vs Canada women's hockey takes place Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 7 p.m. ET at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario, live on NHL Network and streaming on Peacock and Fubo.
• It is the first meeting since the United States beat Canada 2-1 in overtime in the Milan Olympic gold-medal game, with Hilary Knight scoring the late equaliser and Megan Keller the sudden-death winner.
• The game is the first of two pre-tournament exhibitions: the teams meet again Saturday, October 30, at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan.
• Both games are tune-ups for the IIHF Women's World Championship, November 6-16 in Herning and Esbjerg, Denmark.
• Team USA brings a 31-player training camp roster including all 23 members of its Olympic gold-medal team; Canada names a 25-player roster, but captain Marie-Philip Poulin is out after knee surgery.
• The final 25-player United States roster for the world championship is expected to be named around October 31.

What Happened

The USA vs Canada women's hockey rivalry resumes in Windsor because both teams are in the final days of their October training camps, and both need a real test before the world championship. The United States has been in camp in Plymouth, Michigan, since October 23, and Canada has gathered its own group for the same stretch. Wednesday's game is their first opportunity to play together as teams this season, and both coaching staffs will use it to make final roster decisions.

For Canada, the occasion carries an extra edge. This is a new-look Canadian team: seven players on the 25-player roster are heading to their first world championship, Kori Cheverie is behind the bench, and Danièle Sauvageau has taken over as general manager after succeeding Gina Kingsbury. Canada has not yet named a permanent replacement for Troy Ryan, who served as head coach for six years. Team Canada forward Laura Stacey captured the mood ahead of the game, saying the players were excited for their first chance to play together and their first chance to face the United States this season. "Big game, big start to the hockey season for us," Stacey said. "We put in a lot of work. Obviously a really new group here. So for us, it's trying to find a way to come together, trying to find a way to become a team, moving into the world championships."

The game is also a major local event. Tickets start at $68, a pre-game Rise as One Fan Fest is planned at the WFCU Centre, and the timing is good for girls' hockey in the region: the Lakeshore Lightning Girls Hockey Association has about 450 registered players, an estimated 1,500 girls play across Windsor-Essex, and Hockey Canada reports a record 121,000 girls and women in the game nationally.

Background and Context

To understand why Wednesday night matters so much, rewind to February in Milan. Canada led the Olympic gold-medal game late and looked set to reclaim the title it had won at the previous two Winter Games. Then Knight, the American captain and the most decorated player in the history of the women's world championship, scored with 2:04 remaining to force overtime. Keller, a defender from Farmington Hills, Michigan, finished the job in sudden death, completing a perfect 7-0 run for the United States and delivering the Americans' first Olympic gold since PyeongChang 2018.

The United States team that won in Milan is, almost entirely, the team that skates in Windsor. All 23 Olympic gold medallists are in the 31-player camp roster, joined by eight players fighting for the final spots. The camp roster, announced by USA Hockey for the October 23-30 camp, features four goaltenders: Aerin Frankel of the Boston Fleet, Gwyneth Philips of the Ottawa Charge, Ava McNaughton of Wisconsin and Callie Shanahan of the New York Sirens, who was added for this camp. Boston Fleet first-round pick Grace Dwyer was left off the October roster.

The headline names tell the story of the American programme. Knight, now with PWHL Detroit, holds the records for most goals, points and assists in women's world championship history and has won 10 world championship gold medals. Keller, the Olympic overtime hero, anchors the defence alongside Caroline Harvey, the breakout star of the Olympic tournament. Harvey was named the tournament's most valuable player after recording nine points on two goals and seven assists in Milan, and her year since has been remarkable: an NCAA national championship and the Patty Kazmaier Award at Wisconsin, IIHF Player of the Year honours, and selection as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 PWHL Draft by the Vancouver Goldeneyes. "It's been a special year," Harvey said after being drafted on June 17. "Just all the experiences with the U.S. team and Wisconsin. Just so grateful for all my coaches, teammates, and family."

Canada, meanwhile, must cope without its captain and its most important player. Marie-Philip Poulin underwent surgery in July to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a torn meniscus in her right knee, and she will miss the Windsor game and the world championship. It is the first time Poulin will not be on the Canadian roster at a major tournament since 2008, a staggering run that underlines how central she has been to Canadian hockey for nearly two decades.

USA vs Canada Women's Hockey: How to Watch

Fans in the United States can watch the USA vs Canada women's hockey rematch on NHL Network, with streaming available on Peacock and Fubo. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. PT) on Wednesday, October 28, at the WFCU Centre, 8787 McHugh Street, Windsor. The return game is Saturday, October 30, at 7 p.m. ET at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan, giving American fans a home date just three days later.

The American camp roster is a blend of proven champions and emerging talent. The defence includes Lee Stecklein, Cayla Barnes, Rory Guilday, Haley Winn, Laila Edwards, Emma Peschel, Laney Potter, Sydney Morrow and Keller, alongside Harvey. Up front, Knight leads a forward group featuring Kendall Coyne Schofield, Kelly Pannek, Grace Zumwinkle, Hayley Scamurra, Britta Curl-Salemme, Jesse Compher, Sloane Matthews, Tessa Janecke, Hannah Bilka, Joy Dunne, Alex Carpenter, Casey O'Brien, Kirsten Simms and Abbey Murphy. Several of them, including Bilka and Barnes, now play for PWHL Detroit alongside Knight, while others star for Minnesota Frost, Boston Fleet, Seattle Torrent, PWHL San Jose, PWHL Las Vegas, the New York Sirens and the Toronto Sceptres.

Canada's 25-player roster, announced for the pre-tournament games, leans on experience in goal and on the blue line while introducing seven players who have never played at a world championship. The Canadians open their world championship campaign on November 6 against Sweden, and will also face Japan, Denmark and Finland in pool play. For the new players, Windsor is an audition under the brightest possible lights: there is no gentler introduction to this rivalry than a packed arena against the Olympic champions.

Reactions and Quotes

The Canadian camp has embraced the challenge of a rebuilt roster. Stacey's comments before the game stressed togetherness over individual talent, a theme that will define Canada's tournament. "First opportunity as a team to play together," she said. "First opportunity to play the US, this season. So, big game, big start to the hockey season for us."

On the American side, the mood is set by Harvey's remarkable year and Knight's enduring presence. Harvey's journey from Olympic most valuable player to NCAA champion to No. 1 draft pick in a single calendar year is the kind of story that has carried women's hockey to new audiences, and her gratitude after the draft summed up a programme that has never been deeper. Knight, for her part, remains the player Canada fears most: the captain who scored when gold seemed lost, and who has spent a career delivering in exactly these games.

The rivalry itself needs little selling. The United States and Canada have contested every Olympic women's hockey gold-medal game bar one since the sport joined the Winter Games programme, and their meetings have produced some of the most dramatic finishes in Olympic history. Milan added another chapter. Windsor, even as an exhibition, is the next one.

Why It Matters

Wednesday's game matters for three reasons. First, it is a genuine selection trial: with the final American roster due around October 31 and seven Canadians playing for their first world championship places, performances in Windsor will decide who boards the plane to Denmark. Second, it is a form guide for the world championship itself, where the United States will defend the momentum of Olympic gold and Canada will try to prove that a new generation can carry the programme forward without Poulin. Third, it matters for the growth of the women's game: a prime-time, televised USA-Canada game in a sold-out Canadian arena, followed by a return date in Michigan, is exactly the showcase the sport needs between Olympic cycles.

There is also a psychological dimension. Canada has lived with the Milan ending for eight months. A win in Windsor would not erase an Olympic final, but it would give a young Canadian group belief before Denmark, and it would remind the Americans that the gap between these teams remains razor thin. An American win, on the other hand, would extend the champions' dominance and put real pressure on Canada heading into the tournament.

What Happens Next

After Windsor, the teams travel to Plymouth, Michigan, for the second exhibition on Saturday, October 30, at 7 p.m. ET at USA Hockey Arena. The United States is then expected to name its final 25-player world championship roster around October 31. The IIHF Women's World Championship runs November 6-16 in Herning and Esbjerg, Denmark, where Canada opens against Sweden on November 6 and the United States begins its campaign as one of the favourites. Expect the Windsor result to shape the early storylines in Denmark: if Canada's newcomers shine, the narrative will be renewal; if the Americans roll on, it will be a dynasty gathering pace.
