Tennessee Republican Brent Taylor has admitted sending unsolicited nude photos to women in the past, a disclosure that landed one week before voters in the state's 9th Congressional District go to the polls. The admission followed a report on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, in the Nashville Scene, which said several people told the paper they had either received such images from the Memphis lawmaker or had seen them. Taylor, who is running for the U.S. House against Democratic state Representative Justin J. Pearson, did not deny the account. Instead, he described the episodes as youthful indiscretions from years ago and urged voters to move on, even as Pearson condemned the conduct as predatory and said it disqualified Taylor from office.

The story broke at a delicate moment in the 2026 midterm campaign. Early voting in Tennessee began on October 14 and ends on October 29, and Election Day is November 3. Public polling and election forecasts still point to Taylor as the favourite in a district Republican lawmakers redrew this year to favour their party, but the Scene reported that Pearson has closed some of the gap in recent months. With seven days left until Election Day, both campaigns now face the same question: whether a late, personal disclosure moves voters who have already cast ballots, or only hardens opinions that were already formed.

Key Points

• The Nashville Scene reported on October 27 that several people said they had received or seen unsolicited nude photos from Brent Taylor, including one sent as recently as 2021, when he was 53 and had not yet won his state Senate seat.
• Taylor confirmed sending the photos, calling them "youthful indiscretions" and saying his wife and God have forgiven him.
• He later told The Commercial Appeal the episodes were a "past indiscretion" and called the reporting a distraction from grocery and petrol prices.
• Democratic rival Justin Pearson condemned the conduct as predatory, saying married men in their fifties in public office have no business sending unsolicited nude photos to women.
• No criminal charges have been reported in connection with the photos, and Taylor remains on the ballot for Tennessee's 9th Congressional District, where early voting ends October 29.

What Happened

The Nashville Scene's report, published on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, cited multiple anonymous sources who had received or seen nude photos from Taylor. One person, who spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear of reprisal, told the Scene they received an unsolicited picture from Taylor as recently as 2021. Taylor would have been 53 years old at the time, and he had not yet won his seat in the Tennessee Senate. The paper's reporting did not publish the images themselves.

Taylor did not dispute the account when the Scene contacted him. He described the episodes as "youthful indiscretions" and said his wife, Kimberly, had long known about them. "My God and my wife have forgiven me, and I would consider everyone else doing the same," he told the paper. He also told the Scene that "in the past, I've been guilty of being a rounder, back in the day," and pointed out that he is now close to 60. Later on Tuesday, Taylor spoke with Memphis station Action News 5 and again confirmed sending the photos. According to the station, he said the images involved one woman.

Taylor struck a different tone in a statement to The Commercial Appeal, the Memphis newspaper. There he called the instances of sexting a "past indiscretion" and framed the timing as a sign of his standing in the race. The reporting, he said, "signals where we are in the campaign and who the frontrunner is with 7 days left until Election Day." He said he was frustrated "that my wife now has to relive this nonsense" after the couple had worked through it years ago. "Tennessee Niners aren't concerned about my family or this type of past nonsense," Taylor wrote. "They're concerned about their family and prices they're paying at the grocery store and gas station. That's why I'm running for Congress — to stop Democrat Socialist Justin Pearson. He would be an ongoing public embarrassment if elected. Voters have a stark contrast this election. When given the choice, they will choose competence over chaos."

The Commercial Appeal noted an important limit on the reporting: the newspaper has not seen the text messages and has not spoken to the recipients of the messages. That distinction matters. What is confirmed is Taylor's own admission that he sent the photos, not the full contents of any individual exchange. No criminal charges have been reported in connection with the photos, and none of the coverage reviewed for this article suggested that any law enforcement investigation is under way.

Background and Context

Brent Taylor is a Republican state senator representing Eads and parts of Memphis and Shelby County in the Tennessee General Assembly. He is the Republican nominee for Tennessee's 9th Congressional District, a seat reshaped this year when Republican lawmakers redrew the congressional map for West Tennessee in May in a way that favours their party. Taylor leaned on his political base in Shelby County to defeat state Representative Todd Warner of Williamson County in the Republican primary in August.

The seat is open because Democratic Representative Steve Cohen announced last spring that he would not seek reelection, after Tennessee Republicans split his Memphis-based district among three redrawn districts. Taylor's campaign has presented him as a devoted Christian husband and family man, a message that makes the admission awkward for his candidacy. He has been married to his wife, Kimberly, for more than 30 years. President Donald Trump endorsed Taylor in July, describing him as a "Highly Respected State Senator" and telling voters he would "NEVER LET YOU DOWN." Taylor has also secured backing from Tennessee's two Republican senators, Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty.

Pearson, Taylor's Democratic opponent, is a Memphis state representative who rose to national attention as a progressive voice in the state legislature. Independent candidates Dennis Clark and Michelle Head are also on the ballot. The Scene reported that Pearson has narrowed the gap in recent months, even though public polling and election forecasts still favour Taylor. The district's redrawn lines are the central reason for that forecast: a seat designed to be friendly Republican territory is hard for any Democrat to win, whatever the week's headlines.

Brent Taylor and the Tennessee 9th District Race

The admission arrives in the final week of a campaign in which both sides have tried to define the choice for voters. Taylor's campaign has focused on prices, public safety, border security and support for the president's agenda, and his statement on Tuesday returned immediately to that ground, pointing to grocery and petrol prices as the issues voters care about. Pearson's campaign has focused on character and respect for women, and his statement on Tuesday made that case directly, arguing that personal conduct is itself a qualification for office.

The timing also matters because so many votes are already banked. Early voting in Tennessee began on October 14 and ends on October 29, so a large share of the district's electorate will have voted before the story had a full news cycle to develop. Late disclosures can still matter in a close race, by shaping turnout among undecided voters or by giving supporters of the other candidate a reason to show up. But in a district drawn to favour one party, and with the favourite's own admission already on the record, the likeliest effect is narrower: the story reinforces what each side's voters already believed about the candidates.

There is also a question of how the story travels beyond Tennessee. The 2026 midterms have produced a string of late personal controversies in House and Senate races, and national outlets amplified the Taylor story on the same day it broke. That attention cuts both ways. It gives Pearson a national platform in the final week, but it also lets Taylor present himself as the target of a last-minute attack, which is exactly the framing his statement chose: a frontrunner being hit because he is ahead.

Reactions and Quotes

Pearson responded to the reports in a public statement, and his words were unsparing. "Men of faith — let alone men who are married, in their fifties, and in public office — have no business sending unsolicited nude photos to women," he said. "This news reflects very disturbing behavior from someone who has been married for 30 years, professes Christian values, and has held government office since 1995. Taylor's belief that sending unwanted naked photos of himself to women at 53 years old is 'youthful indiscretion' is a ridiculous and dangerous mischaracterization of the type of predatory behavior that needs to be rooted out of our society and politics. Career politicians like him have been abusing their power and getting away with it for far too long. Tennessee deserves leaders who respect women — not those who sexually harass, expose their genitalia, or take advantage of them."

Taylor, for his part, has not apologised in the terms Pearson demanded. His statements combine acknowledgement with dismissal: the conduct happened, his wife and God have forgiven him, and voters should judge him on prices and policy rather than on what he calls past nonsense. "As I near 60 years old, the expiration date has come and gone on any of my youthful indiscretions," he told the Scene. The contrast between the two responses is now the central argument of the race's final week: one candidate says forgiveness closes the matter, the other says the conduct itself, and the age at which it happened, disqualifies him.

Neither the Trump campaign apparatus nor Tennessee's Republican senators had issued a public response to the admission in the coverage reviewed for this article. Action News 5 said Pearson had sent the station a statement in response to the report and that it would keep updating its coverage as the story develops. The Nashville Scene's original reporting remains the foundation of the story, and the paper's account — built on anonymous sources — is the part of the record that Taylor himself has confirmed in broad terms.

Why It Matters

The Tennessee 9th District race matters beyond Memphis because it tests a familiar question in American politics: how much personal conduct should count against a candidate when voters are also weighing prices, safety and party loyalty. Taylor's admission is unusual in one respect: candidates in this position often deny the underlying facts and attack the reporting. Taylor confirmed the core fact while disputing its importance, which leaves voters with a clearer but still contested choice. The facts are not much in dispute; the judgement about them is.

The race also matters because it sits inside a larger midterm map in which Republicans are defending a narrow House majority and Democrats are trying to win back seats in redrawn districts. Tennessee's 9th was drawn to be safe Republican territory, so a Democratic win here would be a genuine surprise. A closer-than-expected result, even in defeat for Pearson, would still be read nationally as a sign of Democratic energy in the final week. A comfortable Taylor win, by contrast, would be read as evidence that personal controversies, even admitted ones, do not move voters in strongly partisan districts.

Finally, the story matters for what it says about the final week of campaigning itself. Late disclosures are a feature of modern elections, and the speed with which this one moved — from the Scene's report on Tuesday morning to national coverage the same day — shows how little time campaigns now have to respond. Taylor's team chose speed over contrition, answering within hours with a statement that tried to turn the story into evidence of his frontrunner status. Whether that gamble works will be known on November 3.

What Happens Next

Early voting in Tennessee ends on Thursday, October 29, 2026, and Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Both campaigns are expected to spend the remaining days on turnout: Taylor's team pointing voters to prices and policy, Pearson's team pointing them to the admission and to the character argument built around it. Further statements from Taylor, from Pearson, or from the Republican officials who endorsed Taylor could still change the shape of the story, and Action News 5 has said it will keep updating its coverage as it develops.

There is no indication in the coverage reviewed that any new reporting is imminent, and no criminal process is under way. Unless new recipients come forward or Taylor gives a fuller account, the story is likely to settle into the form it already has: an admitted episode from years ago, described by the candidate as forgiven and by his opponent as predatory, decided by voters in a district drawn to favour the candidate who admitted it. Results on November 3 will show whether that judgement held.
