The DeForest Buckner trade is official in all but the paperwork: the Indianapolis Colts have sent their three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle back to the San Francisco 49ers, the team that drafted him, for a 2027 fourth-round pick. The move, reported on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, came just hours after Indianapolis dealt eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks, turning one difficult day into a clear statement about where the 2-5 Colts believe their season is heading.

Key Points

• The DeForest Buckner trade sends the 32-year-old defensive tackle from Indianapolis to San Francisco for a 2027 fourth-round draft pick.
• Buckner returns to the 49ers, who drafted him seventh overall in 2016 and traded him to the Colts in 2020.
• His four sacks this season tie for the Colts lead and would lead a San Francisco team hit hard by defensive-line injuries.
• The deal came hours after the Colts traded Quenton Nelson to Seattle, giving Indianapolis three extra draft picks from the two moves.
• San Francisco, at 6-1, is expected to start Buckner alongside Osa Odighizuwa, with a Week 9 debut against the Raiders in view.

What Happened

Indianapolis agreed to move Buckner to San Francisco in exchange for a fourth-round selection in the 2027 draft, according to reports from ESPN and NFL Network carried by Reuters and Field Level Media. The timing made the deal impossible to read in isolation. Earlier on Tuesday, the Colts had already agreed to send Nelson, their long-time anchor on the offensive line, to Seattle for a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick, a deal reported as pending a physical examination.

Together, the two trades gave the Colts three additional draft selections over the next two drafts and removed two of the most recognisable veterans from opposite sides of the ball. For San Francisco, the move addressed a specific and urgent problem. The 49ers have kept winning at 6-1, but their defensive front has been thinned by injuries all season, and a recent defeat exposed how little pressure they could generate without their best rushers available.

Buckner is expected to slot straight into the starting line-up at defensive tackle, beside Osa Odighizuwa, who arrived in San Francisco in the off-season. Reports from the 49ers beat put his likely debut in Week 9 against the Las Vegas Raiders, after the team returns from its Week 8 bye, giving him a full week of practice to learn the calls and settle back into a building he knows well.

Background/Context

Buckner began his career in San Francisco. The 49ers took him with the seventh overall pick in the 2016 draft, and he spent his first four seasons there, developing into one of the league's most respected interior defenders. In 2020, San Francisco traded him to Indianapolis, a decision general manager John Lynch later described as the hardest of his time running the team. That history is part of why Tuesday's move landed so heavily: it was not simply a contender adding a veteran, but a franchise bringing back a player it had once reluctantly let go.

In Indianapolis, Buckner stayed loyal through several disappointing seasons and signed multiple contract extensions, even as the Colts repeatedly faded late in the year. He is now in the final year of his current deal and is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season, which shaped the price. Indianapolis could not expect a first-round return for a player it might have lost for nothing in the spring, while San Francisco was buying a proven starter for a playoff push rather than a long-term cornerstone.

The Colts' wider picture explains the urgency. They sit at 2-5 after a 16-10 defeat to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, and they changed general managers a week earlier, dismissing Chris Ballard and handing interim control to Ed Dodds. Trading Nelson was Dodds' first signature move; moving Buckner hours later confirmed that the new regime is willing to reset the roster now, rather than wait for the off-season.

DeForest Buckner Trade: What San Francisco Is Getting

On the field, San Francisco is getting production, not just a name. Buckner's four sacks this season tie Adetomiwa Adebawore for the Colts' team lead, and that total would also lead the 49ers, a striking detail for a team with a winning record. Across 158 career games, with 153 starts split between San Francisco and Indianapolis, he has 75.5 sacks, 683 tackles and 11 fumble recoveries, along with three Pro Bowl selections.

That kind of interior push matters most when the edges are hurt. Defensive tackles who can collapse the pocket force quarterbacks to move, and moving quarterbacks make life easier for everyone else on the line. San Francisco's problem has not been effort; it has been availability. Nick Bosa has been sidelined by a calf problem, Sam Okuayinonu by a foot injury, and tackles Alfred Collins, C.J. West and James Thompson Jr. have all missed time with knee, tendon and ankle problems respectively.

Buckner does not solve every absence, but he changes the maths. Opponents can no longer double-team one healthy interior lineman and ignore the other, and the 49ers can rotate their remaining rushers instead of asking them to play every meaningful snap. For a team chasing a deep playoff run, that depth is often the difference between surviving November and fading in January.

Reactions/Quotes

Buckner's frustration had been visible before the trade. After Sunday's loss to Minnesota, when reporters asked him about the Colts' struggles, he answered bluntly: "I don't know. How about you guess. I'm frustrated. Same thing. We lost." Asked what needed to change, he added: "I don't know. I can't tell you." Those words, reported by Reuters, read very differently on Tuesday: they were the sound of a veteran who had run out of patience with losing.

The other quote that framed the deal came from six years earlier. When Lynch traded Buckner to Indianapolis in 2020, he called it "the toughest thing I've done since I've been a general manager here." That remark has followed both men ever since, and it helps explain why San Francisco moved so quickly when Buckner became available. General managers rarely get a second chance to undo their hardest trade; Lynch has now taken his.

Around the league, the reaction has been less about surprise than about direction. Two foundational players leaving one franchise on the same day is not a routine roster adjustment. It signals that Indianapolis has accepted its 2026 campaign will not be rescued by a late run, and that Seattle and San Francisco, both NFC West contenders, are being given genuine reinforcements for the stretch run.

Why It Matters

The trade matters for three separate races. In San Francisco, it strengthens a 6-1 team that already looks like a playoff side but has been winning despite its defensive line, not because of it. A healthy, productive Buckner gives the 49ers a pass rush that can travel, and pass rush travels better in the playoffs than almost any other trait. If Bosa returns after the bye, as expected, the pairing could transform a patched-up front into a genuine strength.

In Seattle, the parallel Nelson deal matters just as much, and the two trades should be read together. The Seahawks strengthened their offensive line to protect Sam Darnold, while the 49ers strengthened their defensive line to attack opposing quarterbacks. Both moves were made by NFC West rivals on the same afternoon, which is a reminder that the trade deadline is not only about improving your own team, but about keeping pace with the teams you must beat.

In Indianapolis, the stakes are longer term. Draft picks are only useful if they are spent well, and the Colts have now bet that three extra selections, plus whatever else they might gather before the November 10 deadline, are worth more than two more months of two ageing stars on a 2-5 team. That is a defensible calculation, but it also removes the leaders younger players learn from. The next two weeks will show whether Indianapolis is finished selling, or whether Buckner and Nelson were only the beginning, with running back Jonathan Taylor and other veterans still named in trade speculation.

What Happens Next

The immediate next step is the formal completion of the deal, including any physical examinations and league paperwork, followed by Buckner's introduction in San Francisco and his first practice week. The 49ers' bye in Week 8 is well timed: it gives coaches a chance to install him without rushing him into a game plan, and it gives Buckner time to renew old relationships in the building.

Attention then turns to Week 9 against the Raiders, the expected debut, and to whether Bosa is ready to return in the same window. If both are available, San Francisco's defensive line will look very different from the unit that struggled to generate pressure in its most recent defeat. If Bosa needs more time, Buckner will be asked to carry even more of the load, which is exactly the role he played in Indianapolis.

For the Colts, the November 10 trade deadline is the next marker. Reports this week said owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon did not want to trade Jonathan Taylor despite interest from Minnesota, but the same reports made clear that Indianapolis is listening on other veterans. Every further move will be judged against Tuesday's standard: did the Colts get enough back, and did they keep enough leadership to develop the young players those picks will eventually bring?
