Connor Hellebuyck's long wait is over, and his New Jersey Devils debut could hardly have gone better. The three-time Vezina Trophy winner stopped 16 of 17 shots on Tuesday night as the Devils routed the Dallas Stars 5-1 at the American Airlines Center, ending a standoff with the Winnipeg Jets that had kept one of hockey's best goaltenders off the ice since April.

Captain Nico Hischier scored twice, Jack Hughes and Luke Hughes each had a goal and an assist, and Jesper Boqvist also scored as New Jersey won its fourth straight game and snapped Dallas's five-game winning streak. It was Hellebuyck's first NHL start since April 13, 2026, the final regular-season game of Winnipeg's 2025-26 season, and his first win since a 3-2 decision at St. Louis on April 9.

Key Points

• Connor Hellebuyck stopped 16 of 17 shots to win his Devils debut as New Jersey beat Dallas 5-1 on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
• Nico Hischier scored twice, including goals 2:41 into the first period and 38 seconds into the second, for a team-high seven goals this season.
• Jack Hughes and Luke Hughes each finished with a goal and an assist, and Jesper Boqvist made it 3-0 midway through the second period.
• Hellebuyck started four days after New Jersey acquired him from Winnipeg in a blockbuster trade that ended his suspension for failing to report to training camp.
• The Devils visit the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday to continue a three-game road trip, while Dallas hosts Montreal on Thursday.

What Happened

The Devils wasted no time making their new goaltender comfortable. Hischier opened the scoring just 2:41 into the first period, holding onto the puck before sliding a shot past a sprawling Casey DeSmith. Dallas challenged for goaltender interference against Timo Meier on the play, but the challenge was denied and the goal stood.

Hellebuyck made six saves in the first period as New Jersey jumped out to a 1-0 lead in less than three minutes. The opening frame also brought a scare for the visitors: Jack Hughes was forced to leave briefly midway through the period after taking a high stick to the face and appearing to spit out a tooth. He returned later wearing a full face shield and played a central role in the win.

Hischier doubled the lead just 38 seconds into the second period, beating DeSmith low on his glove side with a snap shot. Boqvist extended the advantage to 3-0 just past the midpoint of the game, and the contest briefly boiled over as Dallas forward Jamie Benn and New Jersey defenceman Brenden Dillon dropped the gloves when play resumed.

Dallas finally broke through at 16:08 of the second period, when Justin Hryckowian deflected a Tyler Myers wrist shot from the point past Hellebuyck for the Stars' only goal. The comeback hopes lasted 28 seconds. Luke Hughes restored the three-goal cushion almost immediately, and Jack Hughes added the final goal at 13:15 of the third period to complete the 5-1 scoreline.

DeSmith, making his third start of the season, stopped 22 of 27 shots. The five goals were a season high against Dallas, which entered the game leading the NHL with a 1.68 goals-against average. Dallas's second-ranked penalty kill went 3-for-3, extending its run to 22 consecutive successful kills over six games, but it was not enough on a night when the Devils controlled long stretches of play.

There was also an injury worry for the hosts. Stars defenceman Kyle Capobianco limped off with an apparent lower-body injury after a hit from Timo Meier early in the final period and did not return. Dallas, in the middle of a six-game homestand, saw its five-game winning streak come to an end, while New Jersey opened its three-game road trip with a statement win.

Background: The Trade Standoff That Led to the Hellebuyck Devils Debut

To understand why Tuesday felt like a release for everyone involved, it helps to rewind to late summer. Hellebuyck, 33, made his trade request public in late August even though he had five seasons left on his contract. He did not report for training camp last month, and the Jets suspended him for not appearing. His suspension began on September 16, and the impasse stretched through the opening weeks of the season.

The breakthrough came on Friday, when New Jersey acquired Hellebuyck from Winnipeg for forwards Dawson Mercer and Nick Bjugstad, goaltender Nico Daws, the rights to forward Alexander Command, a second-round pick in the 2029 NHL Draft and a seventh-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. It was a steep price, but it reflected what Hellebuyck represents: a three-time Vezina Trophy winner as the league's best goaltender, a four-time NHL All-Star, and the man who helped Team USA win gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.

His last season in Winnipeg was difficult by his standards. Reports put his save percentage at .895 across 57 starts in 2025-26 as the Jets missed the playoffs, a downturn that only added to the sense that a fresh start was needed. After 197 days between NHL appearances, Tuesday was also a reminder of how long he had been away from the crease he calls home.

Hellebuyck had just one practice with his new teammates before the Dallas game. Following that first skate on Monday, he said he had been looking forward to the day for a while and that it felt good getting acclimated with a new group. "I'm just really excited to play hockey again," he said. "That was the hardest part about all of this, wanting to go back and not being able to."

Connor Hellebuyck Devils Debut: Calm, Composed and Almost Perfect

If there was rust, it barely showed. Hellebuyck's positioning was calm, his rebound control tidy, and his glove active at the moments Dallas threatened to turn the game. The Stars managed only 17 shots, a testament both to the Devils' defensive structure in front of him and to a goaltender who gave up almost nothing second-hand.

"It was a lot of fun. I thought the guys in front of me just played a perfect game for me to get acclimated," Hellebuyck said after the win. "Low amount of shots, blocking everything, keeping everything to the outside. Letting me see things, letting me touch the puck a lot. I have to work through a little bit of the rust, but I just thought it was a perfect game top to bottom."

Asked what went through his head during the national anthem, he answered with a single word: "Finally." He added that he had felt ready for two months. "If you asked me, I was ready two months ago," he said. "I just had the mindset since the day I got here that I want to get in."

The Devils ended Tuesday night in second place in the Metropolitan Division, and the early signs are that their biggest gamble of the season has already changed the feel of the team. A goaltender of Hellebuyck's pedigree does not just stop pucks; he changes how a team defends, how confident it is with a lead, and how opponents approach the final minutes of a close game.

Reactions and Quotes

Hischier, the Devils captain in his 10th season with New Jersey, was full of praise for his new teammate. "He came in and was making plays everywhere," Hischier said. "He just spread this calmness out. He's a very calm goalie, and he made some big saves in the game in certain situations where it could maybe turn a little bit of momentum to their side. Obviously, great to have him on our team."

Devils coach Sheldon Keefe agreed with that assessment, and the NHL's own report on the game described Hellebuyck as exceptional in his first start for his new club. For a team that has spent recent seasons searching for stability in goal, that calmness may prove as valuable as any single save.

On the Dallas side, the defeat was a rare off night for a team that had been the NHL's stingiest defensively. The Stars had allowed only two goals in each of DeSmith's previous two outings this season, and Tuesday's five goals against were a sharp break from that standard. Dallas still has the structure and the goaltending depth to recover quickly, but the loss also showed how quickly a hot streak can be cooled by a team playing with a point to prove.

Among the travelling Devils supporters and the large contingent of New Jersey fans inside the American Airlines Center, the mood was celebratory. The chant of a new era is premature after one game, but the Devils could hardly have scripted a better first chapter.

Why It Matters

This was more than one win in late October. For New Jersey, it was validation of a blockbuster trade made at significant cost. Mercer, Bjugstad and Daws were all useful NHL players, and two draft picks are real currency. If Hellebuyck returns to Vezina form, that price will look like a bargain. If he does not, it will be questioned all season. Tuesday suggested the Devils made the right bet.

For Hellebuyck personally, the game was a reset. The Olympic gold medal, the Vezina trophies and the All-Star selections are history; the suspension, the trade request and the months away from NHL ice were the recent past. A composed 16-save win against one of the league's best defensive teams is a clean way to start again.

For the wider NHL, the result is a warning. The Devils have elite young talent in the Hughes brothers and a captain in Hischier who is scoring at a team-leading rate. Add a goaltender of Hellebuyck's class, and New Jersey's ceiling rises from playoff hopeful to genuine contender in a crowded Metropolitan Division. Dallas, meanwhile, remains a formidable side, but Tuesday exposed what happens when a team meets a hot goaltender and a motivated opponent on the same night.

What Happens Next

The Devils do not get long to enjoy the win. Their three-game road trip continues on Wednesday at Colorado, a second game in two nights against another Western Conference heavyweight. How Keefe manages Hellebuyck's workload in the early weeks, including whether he goes straight back in against the Avalanche, will be one of the first talking points of the new era.

Dallas returns home to host the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday, looking to start a new winning streak and to restore the defensive numbers that made it the league's toughest team to score against before Tuesday. Capobianco's injury will also be monitored after he was helped off the ice in the third period.

For Hellebuyck, the next test is consistency. One strong debut ends the story of the standoff; a run of strong starts will begin the story of a Devils revival. On Tuesday's evidence, New Jersey fans have every reason to believe the second story is coming.
