Victor Wembanyama scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in just under 27 minutes as the San Antonio Spurs steamrolled the Sacramento Kings 130-103 on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio. The Spurs led by 10 points after the first quarter, by 26 at half-time, and by 27 going into the fourth — a lead Sacramento never seriously threatened.

The story of the night was the first half. San Antonio scored 80 points before the break, a league season high for points in a half, along with season highs of 23 assists and 13 three-pointers in a half. Julian Champagnie, coming off the bench, made all eight of his three-pointers in the first half, and he and Wembanyama combined for 47 points in the opening two quarters. By the time Wembanyama tipped in the final basket of the half at the buzzer, the Spurs led 80-54, and the second half was effectively a formality.

What Happened

The tone was set on the very first play, according to the game's takeaways: an alley-oop from former King De'Aaron Fox to Wembanyama for an easy basket inside. It was a sign of how the night would go. Wembanyama scored 15 points in the first quarter, Vassell hit three three-pointers in the period, and San Antonio closed the quarter ahead 39-29.

The second quarter was more of the same. Champagnie kept shooting — and making — shots from distance. His eighth three-pointer, and sixth of the period, pushed the Spurs' lead to 68-43 with 4:23 left in the half. Wembanyama then crashed the glass for a final tip-in at the buzzer to give San Antonio its biggest lead of the half, 80-54, as the teams went to the locker room. The Spurs had 23 assists and 13 three-pointers in the half, both league season highs for a half, to go with the 80 points.

Sacramento never got closer than 23 points in the third quarter as the Spurs carried a 107-80 lead into the final period. The Kings' reserves made the final score a little more respectable in the fourth, but the visitors never challenged San Antonio's lead. The quarter scores tell the story plainly: 39-29, 41-25, 27-26 and 23-23, for a final score of 130-103.

The full box score underlines how balanced San Antonio was. Behind Wembanyama's 29 and Champagnie's 26, Castle scored 15, Vassell added 14 points and eight assists, Johnson scored 14, Harper had 13 and Fox finished with 11 points and six assists. For Sacramento, Hunter led the way with 24 points, Zach LaVine added 22, Darius Acuff Jr. scored 19 and Sabonis recorded 20 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists. The Spurs finished with 29 fast-break points and 60 points in the paint, and outscored the Kings by 12 points from beyond the arc.

Background and Context

The win was San Antonio's second in a row and lifted the Spurs to 2-2 in the young 2026-27 NBA season. It came in the first half of a home-road back-to-back that continues on Wednesday in Utah, where the Spurs visit the Jazz. For a team widely tipped as a championship contender this season, the first half against Sacramento was the kind of complete performance coaches dream about: the ball moved, the shots fell, and the defence turned stops into easy baskets at the other end.

Sacramento, by contrast, is still looking for its first win. The Kings fell to 0-4, and the defensive numbers make grim reading: they have surrendered at least 121 points in each of their four games. Tuesday's game felt, from the opening tip, like one Sacramento had little chance of winning — not only on talent, but with the Kings already dealing with injuries to key players. The Kings now visit the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday, October 29, in search of a first victory.

Tuesday was a busy night around the NBA. In Boston, Jayson Tatum hit a buzzer-beater to lift the Celtics past the Nets 125-124 in overtime, and in New York the Knicks beat the Pistons 111-97 for their first win of the season. But no team on the night produced a half quite like San Antonio's 80-point explosion — a half that, by the league's own season marks, had not been matched for scoring, assists or three-point shooting in 2026-27.

Spurs Beat Kings 130-103: How the First Half Was Won

Three things decided the game before half-time. The first was Wembanyama's efficiency: 29 points on 14-of-21 shooting, with 10 rebounds, five blocks and, remarkably, no turnovers and no personal fouls in under 27 minutes. He scored inside, he cleaned up misses, and he protected the rim — the complete two-way performance that has made him an early MVP candidate in the eyes of many observers.

The second was Champagnie's shooting. Eight three-pointers in a half, most of them from the corners and most of them wide open, broke Sacramento's defence apart. Once the Kings started chasing him off the line, the driving lanes opened for everyone else. Champagnie finished 9 of 14 from the field and 8 of 13 from three-point range, and his 26 points off the bench were a career-type night in a supporting role.

The third was ball movement. Twenty-three assists in a half is not an accident; it is the product of a team that trusts the extra pass. Vassell's eight assists, Harper's six and Fox's six all fed into that total, and the Spurs' 29 fast-break points show how often good defence became instant offence. Sacramento, for its part, could not slow any of it down: the Kings trailed by double digits after one quarter and never got the deficit back under 23 in the second half.

Reactions and Quotes

The wire reports on the game framed the result less as a single star's night and more as a statement about the gap between the two teams. Field Level Media's game report called the Spurs' first half "nearly flawless" and noted the league season highs for points, assists and three-pointers in a half. Its takeaway was blunt: everything was too easy for San Antonio, and a championship contender looked, against Sacramento's defence, like a team going through a tune-up.

The Kings' side of that story is the defensive one. The takeaways from the game stressed that Sacramento's defence has been the talk of the town for years, but that Tuesday was a reminder of how far the Kings still have to go before they reach their defensive goals. Champagnie alone, the report noted, outshot the Kings from deep in the first two quarters, making eight of 10 three-pointers in the first half against Sacramento's seven of 16 as a team.

No post-game player or coach quotations were carried in the wire reports checked for this article, so this report does not invent any. What the numbers say, however, is unambiguous: a 26-point half-time lead, built on record first-half scoring and unselfish passing, is the kind of win that tells a team — and the rest of the league — exactly where it stands in late October.

Why It Matters

This game matters for both teams, for opposite reasons. For San Antonio, it is evidence that the Spurs' ceiling is as high as their billing. When Wembanyama is this efficient, when a bench player can score 26 points on eight three-pointers, and when the ball moves for 23 assists in a half, the Spurs look like a team that can beat anyone — and beat them early, before the fourth quarter matters.

For Sacramento, the concern is structural. Four games, four defeats, and at least 121 points conceded every time is not a slump; it is a pattern. The Kings have talent — Hunter, LaVine and Sabonis all scored 20 or more on Tuesday — but scoring has not been the problem. Stopping anyone has. Until the defence improves, every game risks following the same script as this one: an early deficit, a chase that never gets close, and a respectable final margin that flatters the performance.

For the wider league, the first half also sets an early benchmark. Eighty points, 23 assists and 13 three-pointers in a half are the season's best marks in all three categories, and they were set in the same 24 minutes. Other contenders will measure themselves against that standard as the season goes on.

What Happens Next

San Antonio does not have long to enjoy this one. The Spurs visit the Utah Jazz on Wednesday, October 28, in the second half of their back-to-back, and a second straight win on the road would take them above .500 for the first time this season. The question for the Spurs is whether the first-half ball movement travels: the Jazz will have watched the Sacramento tape and will try, above all, to take away the open corner threes that Champagnie feasted on.

Sacramento, meanwhile, heads to New Orleans to face the Pelicans on Thursday, October 29, still hunting a first win. The Kings' priority is obvious — hold an opponent under 121 points for the first time this season — and the longer the winless start goes on, the louder the questions about the defence will get. A win in New Orleans would change the conversation overnight; a fifth straight defeat, with another big points total conceded, would deepen it.

US News Pulse will update this story with the results of both games and with any injury or rotation news that emerges from either camp.
