The Atlanta Dream open letter released on Tuesday night, October 27, 2026, is the bluntest document of the WNBA Finals so far, and it arrives with the series on the brink. The Dream told the city of Atlanta that they warned the WNBA months ago that the Finals schedule clashed with NBA games at State Farm Arena, raised the warning again as the playoffs went on, and were largely ignored. Now, with the Golden State Valkyries leading 3-2 and one win from a first championship, the deciding game of the series so far will tip off at 12:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, October 29, because the Atlanta Hawks play at the same arena that evening.

That is the heart of the Atlanta Dream open letter: not a complaint about one tip-off time, but a claim that a Finals team was treated as an afterthought in its own city. The letter, signed by owners Larry and Robyn Gottesdiener, Suzanne Abair and Renee Montgomery, thanks fans for their patience, thanks the Hawks for adjusting their schedule three times, and says plainly that a Thursday lunchtime start is not what the Dream chose and not what they fought for.

Key Points

• The Atlanta Dream released an open letter to Atlanta on Tuesday night, October 27, 2026, saying they raised WNBA Finals scheduling conflicts two months ago and again during the playoffs.
• Game 6 of the WNBA Finals will tip off at 12:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, October 29, at State Farm Arena, because the Atlanta Hawks host the Cleveland Cavaliers there at 8 p.m. ET the same evening.
• Games 3 and 4 were also moved: Game 3 was played a day earlier than planned and Game 4 tipped off in the early afternoon, after clashes with a concert and the Hawks' home opener.
• The Valkyries lead the best-of-seven Finals 3-2 after a 64-55 win in Game 5 at Chase Center on Monday, October 26, and can clinch their first title in Atlanta on Thursday.
• The Dream thanked the Hawks for adjusting their schedule three times, while saying their own concerns did not receive the attention or urgency they deserved from the league.

What Happened

On Tuesday night, the Dream published a letter addressed to the city of Atlanta, responding to criticism of the team, the WNBA and the Hawks over a Finals schedule that has been repeatedly reshaped by events at State Farm Arena. CNN reported the letter on October 27, and the New York Post published its key passages the same night. The letter does not attack the Hawks. It thanks them, and it thanks State Farm Arena, for making the Finals possible in a big arena at all. Its target is the process that left the Dream fighting for dates and times after the playoff schedule was set.

The timeline in the letter is specific. It says: "Two months ago, when the WNBA finalized playoff dates and times, we raised concerns that the W Finals schedule conflicted with NBA games at State Farm Arena." It continues: "As we moved through the playoffs, we reiterated those concerns. Our concerns did not receive the attention, nor the urgency that they deserved." That sequence matters, because it turns a scheduling inconvenience into a charge of disregard: the Dream say they saw this coming, said so early, said so again, and still ended up with a midday Finals game.

The most quoted line of the letter follows immediately: "Perhaps it was assumed that the Dream would not make it this far. Perhaps, our place in the Finals was not accounted for. Whatever the reason, the reality is that we are here. We earned our place in the Finals, and our city deserves the opportunity to show up for its team." In a series that has already produced sellout crowds at State Farm Arena, that line landed as both a defence of the team and a rebuke of anyone who planned the postseason as if Atlanta would not be there.

Background and Context

To understand why the venue matters so much, it helps to know where the Dream normally play. The Dream joined the WNBA as an expansion team in 2008 and played at State Farm Arena, then known as Philips Arena, from 2008 to 2016. Since 2021 they have played at Gateway Center Arena in College Park, outside the city, and they will move back to State Farm Arena permanently in 2027. The capacity gap is the whole story in one number: Gateway Center holds about 3,500 fans, while State Farm Arena seats more than 17,000.

For a Finals series, that gap is the difference between a small, loud home gym and a major-event stage. The Dream wanted the big stage, and the letter says so: "We believed that our fans and the city wanted the opportunity to be a part of this historic series, and to see it played on a world-class stage. That meant State Farm Arena." The trade-off is that State Farm Arena is operated by the Hawks, and the Dream are owned separately from the Hawks. The two clubs share a city and an arena, but not an owner, a front office or a calendar.

The Finals schedule has already bent around that shared calendar. Game 3 was played a day earlier than originally planned and Game 4 tipped off in the early afternoon rather than the evening, after conflicts with a concert and the Hawks' home opener. Game 6, announced for 12:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, October 29, is the third major adjustment, and it comes on a day when the Hawks host Cleveland at 8 p.m. ET. The New York Post noted the awkward possibility that, if Golden State clinches in Atlanta, the Valkyries could be forced to celebrate in the Dream's practice facility rather than on a Finals court cleared for a trophy presentation.

Atlanta Dream Open Letter: What the Owners Actually Said

The letter opens with gratitude, and that tone is deliberate. It reads: "Thank you for your patience, your flexibility, and your willingness to navigate all the hurdles being placed in front of us. This postseason has asked a lot of our fans, our partners, our players, and our city." Only then does it turn to the complaint, and it keeps the Hawks out of the firing line. The owners write that they are grateful to everyone who helped make the State Farm Arena games possible, "especially our partners - the Atlanta Hawks and State Farm Arena - who stepped up by adjusting their schedule on the fly, not once, but three times."

On the Game 6 start time, the letter is unsparing. It says the 12:30 p.m. ET tip-off is "not what we would have chosen and not what we fought for." The New York Post version of the letter adds the Dream's affection for their usual home, saying that, as much as they have affection and nostalgia for Gateway Center Arena, they believed fans and the city wanted this historic series on a world-class stage. The letter closes with pride rather than bitterness: "We are proud to represent Atlanta. We are proud to be in the Finals. And we are grateful for the way this city has rallied around."

There is one more line that explains why the owners felt they had to write at all. After thanking the Hawks, the letter says: "The Hawks and the Dream are different teams with different histories, but we share a city, a community, and a responsibility to help Atlanta shine on the biggest stages. When one of us has an opportunity to make history, we all want to see it happen." That is the Dream's argument in a sentence: sharing a city should mean sharing the stage, not squeezing the Finals into the gaps left by another team's calendar.

Reactions and Quotes

CNN reported that it had reached out to the WNBA for comment on the letter, and no league response was included in its October 27 report. That silence, for now, is part of the story: the Dream have put a detailed, dated charge on the record, and the league has not yet answered it in public.

Inside the series, the players have tried to treat the time as a non-issue. Dream guard Allisha Gray said of the early tip-off: "It's the Finals. We just got to do what we've got to do. I don't care playing at 8 a.m., 1 p.m., midnight. We got a championship to win." Dream coach Karl Smesko said the only real difference is that neither team will have a shootaround on game day. Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase said her team's main concerns are rest and recovery, and that Valkyries fans will make the sacrifice to watch, whether on an app or a phone.

The league's public case for the State Farm Arena move has rested on the crowds. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said: "The sellout crowds and extraordinary atmosphere at State Farm Arena for Games 3 and 4 were a tremendous success, and we're excited to give thousands more fans the opportunity to experience Game 6 with a championship on the line." She also thanked the NBA, the Dream, the Valkyries, the Hawks, State Farm Arena and USA Network for the collaboration and flexibility that made the move possible. The Dream's letter does not dispute the crowds. It disputes the idea that big crowds excuse a planning process that, in their telling, ignored their warnings.

The wider history supports the Dream's point that this is not a one-off. In 2023, a Janet Jackson concert was postponed to accommodate a first-round Hawks playoff game against the Boston Celtics, showing that, at shared arenas, NBA events often take precedence. Last year, the Valkyries moved a first-round playoff game more than 40 miles to SAP Center in San Jose, home of the NHL's San Jose Sharks, because the Laver Cup tennis tournament was booked at Chase Center. Across the WNBA's 30 seasons, playoff games have repeatedly been displaced by venue availability, and the Dream's letter is the most public attempt yet by a Finals team to say that pattern should stop.

Why It Matters

This letter matters because it breaks a long silence about how women's sport is scheduled. Finals games are supposed to be the showcase, the games a league builds its season around, yet here a Finals game is starting at lunchtime on a working Thursday so that an NBA regular-season game can take the evening slot. Fans who work, students in class and families who cannot get downtown by midday are the ones who lose, even if the arena itself is full. A sellout does not prove a time was fair; it proves demand survived a bad time.

It also matters for Atlanta specifically. The Dream are about to move back to State Farm Arena permanently in 2027, and this Finals run is their audition for that future. If the city sees a packed, loud Finals at State Farm Arena, the move looks like a homecoming. If it sees a team publicly complaining that it had to fight for every date, the move looks like a tenancy. The letter tries to have it both ways, praising the Hawks and the arena while putting the league on notice, because the Dream need both relationships to work next season.

For the Valkyries, the letter is an unwanted subplot in a dream season. Golden State, in only their second season, are one win from a title after winning Game 5 64-55 in San Francisco. A championship clinched at lunchtime in someone else's building, with a trophy celebration possibly squeezed into a practice facility, would be a strange ending to a historic run. The Dream's complaint, whatever its merits, risks turning Golden State's coronation into a footnote to an argument about scheduling.

What Happens Next

Game 6 tips off at 12:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, October 29, at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. If the Dream win, the series returns to San Francisco for a decisive Game 7 at Chase Center on Saturday, October 31. If the Valkyries win, they are champions in their second season, and the question of where and how they celebrate will become immediate.

Watch, too, for the WNBA's response. The league has so far let Engelbert's earlier statement about sellout crowds stand as its position. A fuller answer, one that addresses the Dream's claim that warnings were raised two months ago and repeated during the playoffs, would matter more than another celebration of attendance. So would any change to how the league books Finals dates when a Finals team shares an arena with an NBA club.

For Atlanta fans, the practical task is simpler: get to State Farm Arena by midday on Thursday, or find a screen. The Dream have told their city, in public, that this is not the time they wanted. They have also told it that they earned this stage. Thursday will show whether the city answers at lunchtime, and whether a Finals team can make history even when the clock is not on its side.
