Seagate earnings beat Wall Street forecasts on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, and still sent the hard-disk-drive maker's shares lower in after-hours trading, in the latest sign that even record results are no longer enough for investors who have already priced in an artificial intelligence boom. The Fremont, California-based company reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 revenue of $4.23 billion, up 61% from a year earlier, and adjusted earnings of $7.68 a share, ahead of the $7.45 analysts polled by FactSet had expected. It also raised its guidance for the current quarter. Yet the stock fell more than 7% after the closing bell, a reaction that says less about Seagate's quarter than about the market's nerves over how long the AI storage surge, and the prices it supports, can last.

Key Points

• Seagate reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 revenue of $4.23 billion, up 61% year on year, beating the $4.15 billion consensus forecast.
• Adjusted earnings rose to $7.68 a share, from $2.61 a year earlier on the FactSet comparison, and ahead of the $7.45 expected.
• On a GAAP basis, net income was $1.76 billion and diluted earnings were $7.59 a share, against $549 million and $2.43 a year earlier.
• Seagate guided to second-quarter revenue of $4.8 billion, plus or minus $100 million, and adjusted earnings of $9.20 a share, plus or minus 20 cents, both ahead of prior forecasts.
• Shares nevertheless fell more than 7% in after-hours trading on Tuesday, after rising 3.7% in the regular session.

What Happened

Seagate released its results after the US market closed on Tuesday, following a regular session in which the stock had gained 3.7%. The headline numbers were strong by almost any measure. Revenue of $4.233 billion compared with $2.629 billion in the same quarter a year earlier. GAAP gross margin was 57.3% and GAAP operating margin was 48.8%. The company generated $1.690 billion in operating cash flow and $1.479 billion in free cash flow in the quarter, retired about $1.2 billion of debt principal, and returned $568 million to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases. Cash and cash equivalents stood at $1.258 billion at October 2, 2026, and Seagate declared a quarterly dividend of $0.76 a share, payable on January 7, 2027.

The after-hours reaction was swift. Barron's put the fall at 7.3%, to $619.36, while Investor's Business Daily later put it at more than 8%, to about $610, a difference that reflects how quickly after-hours prices were moving rather than any dispute about the direction. Either way, the stock gave back its daytime gain and more. Before the results, Seagate had already closed below its 200-day moving average for four consecutive sessions, having first slipped below that level on October 16 for the first time since May 2025, a technical sign that momentum had been fading even before Tuesday's report.

Background and Context

Seagate is, with Western Digital, one of only two US sellers of hard-disk drives, and AI has turned that once-cyclical hardware business into a central part of the data-centre buildout. AI models both require and produce enormous amounts of data, and much of that data ends up on high-capacity nearline drives, the mass-capacity disks that hold information data centres need to keep but do not need to retrieve instantly. Seagate closed fiscal 2026 with revenue up 34% to $12.2 billion and record free cash flow of $3.1 billion, and in the prior quarter it reported revenue of $3.63 billion and adjusted earnings of $5.71 a share, beating the $5.10 expected.

That success has also made the shares expensive and volatile. Investor's Business Daily noted that Seagate stock had risen more than 650% since the start of 2025, yet had already pulled back more than 30% from its June record highs before Tuesday's results, with Barron's putting the fall from the June 22 record closing high at more than 40%. The same forces that lifted the stock, tight supply and long-term contracts at high margins, are now the source of anxiety: any hint that supply might expand, or that demand might cool, threatens the premium the market has awarded the company.

Seagate Earnings: Why a Beat Was Not Enough

The paradox of Tuesday's report is that Seagate beat and raised, and still fell. The guidance for the December quarter, revenue of $4.8 billion at the midpoint and adjusted earnings of $9.20 a share, was ahead of prior analyst forecasts of about $4.5 billion to $4.55 billion in sales and $8.66 in earnings. In a normal earnings season, that combination, a beat plus a raise, is usually enough. For Seagate, it was not, because investors had already assumed a strong result. Barron's had warned before the report that a simple beat-and-raise might not be enough, pointing to Western Digital, which had beaten expectations days earlier only to sink amid questions about rising capital spending and potential new hard-drive supply.

The deeper worry is competition. On October 2, 2026, Nikkei reported that Japanese rival Toshiba planned to invest about ¥60 billion, roughly $380 million, to double its hard-disk-drive capacity for AI data centres in fiscal 2027, centred on the Philippines, and to lift its market share from about 10% towards 30%. Seagate fell 10.21% that day, to $848.99, and Western Digital fell 10.22%, to $415.29. Analysts quoted after that report argued Toshiba's plan was a timing question rather than an immediate flood of drives, but the episode showed how quickly the market reprices a scarcity premium. Tuesday's fall fits the same pattern: strong demand, but a market that is no longer willing to pay any price for it.

Reactions and Quotes

Chief executive Dave Mosley struck a confident tone in the company's news release, saying: "Seagate delivered another quarter of record profitability and our highest ever free cash flow in the September quarter, demonstrating the earnings power of our business amid a strengthening demand environment." The numbers support that description. Record profitability, record quarterly free cash flow and a raised outlook are not the language of a company in trouble.

Analysts had also been broadly supportive before the results. Barron's reported that 83% of analysts tracked by FactSet rated Seagate the equivalent of a buy, with an average price target above $1,100, and that Bank of America had lifted its target to $1,200 from $1,150 while reiterating a buy rating. Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan wrote that most of Seagate's nearline volume was under build-to-order contracts, and that as those contracts came up for renewal the company should be able to raise prices, with prices and margins continuing to expand well into 2028. That pricing-power view is the bull case investors will test in coming quarters.

Why It Matters

Seagate matters beyond its own shareholders because it is a bellwether for the AI infrastructure trade. If the companies that store AI's data cannot sustain their margins, or if new supply arrives faster than expected, the whole chain of AI spending, from chips to data centres to storage, comes under question. Tuesday's broader market, by contrast, was calm: the S&P 500 rose 0.3% and the Nasdaq gained more than 0.5%, helped by Broadcom, which jumped more than 2% after banks announced $63 billion in financing for Broadcom technology for Anthropic. Seagate fell into a rising market, which makes the move harder to dismiss as general risk aversion.

For consumers and businesses, hard-drive pricing feeds into cloud storage costs, and cloud costs feed into AI service prices. A tight storage market supports Seagate's margins but keeps buyer costs high; a looser market would do the opposite. Tuesday's report suggests the tight market has not yet loosened. Tuesday's share price suggests investors are no longer sure it will stay that way.

What Happens Next

The next test comes quickly. Alphabet and Microsoft report after the market closes on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, and Amazon and Apple follow on Thursday, October 29, with investors watching cloud growth and capital spending for the same AI-spending question that hit Seagate. The Federal Reserve also announces its October decision on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Eastern Time, with markets overwhelmingly expecting rates to be held at 3.75% to 4.00%. For Seagate itself, the key numbers to watch in the December quarter are whether nearline pricing holds as contracts renew, whether the $4.8 billion revenue guide is met, and whether Toshiba's capacity plans move from report to reality. If demand stays strong and supply stays tight, the after-hours fall may look like an overreaction. If either changes, it may look like an early warning.
