President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, that his administration will ban the terms “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” from federal government documents, replacing them with “Super Intelligence” and “SI” — a striking rebranding of the most talked-about technology of the decade, announced in a Truth Social post aimed squarely at The Wall Street Journal.

“When will The Wall Street Journal start calling Artificial Intelligence (AI), a very bad and inaccurate name, SI (Super Intelligence), the name which virtually everyone else is using, or soon will be,” Trump wrote. “In short order, we will be officially BANNING the term, ‘AI/Artificial Intelligence,’ in all relevant documents, and everything else, due to its inaccuracy. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

The post goes further than the executive order Trump signed on September 30, 2026, titled “Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence,” which had already directed federal departments and agencies to swap the old terms for the new ones in official communications and operations, to the maximum extent permitted by law. Tuesday’s message turned that bureaucratic instruction into a public promise: a ban, in the president’s own capital letters, across relevant documents “and everything else.”

Whether the ban reaches as far as the post suggests will depend on the fine print. The September order itself drew a line the October post did not repeat: previously issued regulations, existing government contracts, grants and historical archival records are not to be retroactively altered. And because many uses of the term “artificial intelligence” are written into statutes passed by Congress, a lasting change to the legal vocabulary would need lawmakers, not just an executive order — which is why the September order gave the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology 60 days to send Congress proposed legislative language creating a federal statutory definition of “Super Intelligence.”

Key Points

• Donald Trump said on October 27, 2026, that his administration will officially ban the terms “AI” and “Artificial Intelligence” in all relevant federal documents, replacing them with “SI” and “Super Intelligence.”
• The announcement, made on Truth Social, singled out The Wall Street Journal for continuing to use the old term.
• It builds on a September 30 executive order, “Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence,” which already told federal agencies to adopt the new terminology to the maximum extent permitted by law.
• Existing regulations, contracts, grants and archives are not to be retroactively changed under that order.
• The order set a 60-day deadline for proposed legislation giving “Super Intelligence” a formal statutory definition, putting Congress at the centre of what happens next.

What Happened

Trump’s Tuesday post was short, direct and personal. Rather than announcing the policy through a White House ceremony or a formal statement, he framed it as a challenge to a newspaper: when, he asked, would The Wall Street Journal start calling the technology by the name he prefers? The answer, in his telling, is that “virtually everyone else” already uses “Super Intelligence,” or soon will.

The post then escalated from a complaint about a newspaper’s style into a government-wide commitment. “In short order, we will be officially BANNING the term,” he wrote, extending the ban beyond documents to “everything else.” No implementing memorandum, timetable or list of affected documents was published alongside the post in the reporting of it, and the White House had not, in the coverage available, spelled out which documents would change first.

That matters because the September 30 order already describes a sweeping but bounded programme. Under it, the revised terminology is to be adopted in government correspondence, public communications, official websites, reports and administrative policy documents. The order’s own qualifier — “to the maximum extent permitted by law” — is doing important work: an executive order cannot rewrite statutes, and it cannot unilaterally rewrite the contracts and regulations it expressly leaves untouched.

The practical effect, at least initially, is therefore likely to be visible in the government’s own voice — its websites, press releases, reports and internal correspondence — rather than in the law books. A citizen reading a federal agency’s homepage might soon meet “SI” where “AI” used to sit, while the statute that agency administers keeps its original wording until Congress acts.

Background and Context

The renaming push did not arrive out of nowhere. It follows a White House meeting with the technology industry’s most powerful figures, including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai and Jensen Huang, for discussions on technological advancement and the safe development of advanced systems. During that meeting, Trump described the sector’s growth as unprecedented, while the executives emphasised collaboration and safety.

It also arrives at the peak of an extraordinary investment boom in the technology itself. Meta has launched a fundraising drive worth about $95 billion to fund its artificial-intelligence expansion, in a single day of AI spending across the sector estimated at $198 billion. Anthropic, the maker of the Claude chatbot, has filed for a stock market listing under the ticker ANT, reporting $16.3 billion of revenue in the first half of 2026. Alphabet and Microsoft were due to report quarterly results on October 28, with Amazon and Apple following on October 29 — a week in which investors are judging whether the trillions being poured into data centres, chips and power can earn their keep.

Against that backdrop, the argument for a new name is, in the administration’s telling, about accuracy rather than marketing. The September order says technological advances have outgrown the original framework used to describe artificial intelligence. Its central passage is worth quoting in full, because it is the administration’s own case for the change:

“The capabilities of today’s frontier systems do much more than imitate or automate discrete aspects of human intelligence. They increasingly amplify human ingenuity and unlock new forms of creativity, empowering Americans to achieve what was previously impossible across science, medicine, and nearly every other domain of human endeavor,” the order stated.

There is, however, a wrinkle in that case that readers should know about. In the technology industry, “superintelligence” has long been used for something more specific than today’s systems: a hypothetical future form of machine intelligence that far surpasses human ability across the board. Applying the word to the chatbots, image generators and coding assistants in use today therefore does not merely describe them more grandly — it borrows a term that, in its usual sense, points to a different and more distant frontier. Supporters of the change would say that is precisely the point: the government is declaring that the era it is entering is bigger than the old label. Critics of the rebranding, if the debate follows the usual pattern of such language fights, are likely to say the opposite: that renaming a thing does not change what it is, and that a government which controls the vocabulary risks controlling the debate.

Trump Super Intelligence Ban: What the Order Actually Does

Strip away the capital letters, and the September 30 order does four concrete things. First, it tells every federal executive department and agency to replace “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” with “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in official communications and operations, as far as the law allows. Second, it defines the places where the change should show up: correspondence, public communications, official websites, reports and administrative policy documents. Third, it protects the past: previously issued regulations, existing contracts and grants, and historical archives stay as they are. Fourth, it starts a legislative clock: within 60 days, the president’s science and technology adviser must send Congress draft language establishing an updated federal statutory definition of “Super Intelligence” and recommending corresponding amendments to existing laws.

That fourth step is the one to watch. Sixty days from September 30 lands in late November 2026, days before the new Congress takes shape after the November 3 midterm elections. If Congress adopts a statutory definition, the new vocabulary gains a legal footing that no executive order alone can give it. If Congress ignores or rejects the proposal, the rebranding stays an executive-branch style rule — visible on government websites, but not in the law.

The order also raises a practical question that agencies will have to answer document by document: what counts as a “relevant” document? A press release is straightforward. A technical standard, a grant application form, a safety report or a court filing is less so, especially where the original term appears in a quoted law, a contractor’s own wording or an international agreement. The September order’s qualifier — to the maximum extent permitted by law — gives agencies room to keep the old term where changing it would create legal confusion, but it also guarantees inconsistency in the early months, with some documents converted and others left alone.

Reactions and Quotes

The most important reaction so far is the president’s own, because the policy is, at this stage, largely his voice. His October 27 post is both the announcement and the argument: the old name is “very bad and inaccurate,” the new name is what “virtually everyone else is using, or soon will be,” and the ban is coming “in short order.”

The administration’s formal case, by contrast, is measured and aspirational rather than combative. The September order presents the change as a recognition of progress: systems that “amplify human ingenuity and unlock new forms of creativity,” in its words, deserve a name that reflects what they do rather than what they imitate. That framing deliberately links the renaming to the administration’s broader technology agenda — American leadership in a field it treats as central to economic and national power — rather than presenting it as a mere style preference.

What has not yet emerged, in the reporting available, is a detailed response from the agencies that must carry the change out, from Congress, or from the technology companies whose products are being renamed. The White House meeting with Musk, Zuckerberg, Pichai and Huang showed the industry willing to discuss technological advancement and safety at the president’s table; whether those companies adopt “Super Intelligence” in their own products and marketing is a separate question, and one the federal order cannot answer for them. Private companies, newspapers and the public remain free to call the technology whatever they like — a federal terminology order binds the federal government, not the language itself.

Why It Matters

Language fights in government are rarely only about language. The words a government uses shape what its citizens, its courts and its contractors understand a policy to be about. If federal reports, websites and grant programmes start speaking of “Super Intelligence” as a matter of course, the term will gain an official weight that no marketing campaign could buy — and future debates about regulation, funding and safety will be conducted in vocabulary the administration chose.

There is also a timing dimension. The renaming arrives in the same week as the Federal Reserve’s October 28 rate decision and the biggest earnings reports of the year, when the question hanging over markets is whether artificial-intelligence spending can justify its cost. A government that renames the technology at the height of that debate is making a claim about its importance: this is not a passing tool, it is an era. The September order’s title says so outright — it claims to inaugurate “the Era of Super Intelligence.”

For ordinary readers, the most immediate consequence may be confusion rather than clarity. For months, the same technology may be called “AI” in a statute, “SI” on an agency website, “artificial intelligence” in a newspaper and “superintelligence” in a company’s marketing, with each usage meaning something slightly different. That confusion is a cost of any renaming, and it is worth keeping in mind when judging whether the change succeeds on its own terms: a name that clarifies should, in the end, make things easier to understand, not harder.

What Happens Next

Three dates frame what happens next. The first is the 60-day deadline in the September order, which falls in late November 2026: the moment the president’s science and technology adviser is due to send Congress draft legislation defining “Super Intelligence” in statute. The second is the November 3 midterm election, which will decide the Congress that receives that proposal. The third is less precise but more visible: the coming weeks, in which federal agencies begin — or conspicuously fail to begin — changing their websites, reports and correspondence, and in which it becomes clear how literally the administration intends its “ban” to be taken.

Watch, too, for the first test cases: a major agency report published under the new terminology, a government website that flips from AI to SI, or a document that keeps the old term because a law requires it. Those small, visible choices will show whether the rebranding is a genuine administrative programme or a presidential slogan. And watch for whether the technology companies themselves follow: if the firms building the systems adopt the new name, the government’s vocabulary may become the industry’s; if they do not, “Super Intelligence” may remain a Washington term for a technology the rest of the world keeps calling AI.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly did Trump announce on October 27, 2026? In a Truth Social post, he said his administration will officially ban the terms “AI” and “Artificial Intelligence” in all relevant federal documents “and everything else,” replacing them with “SI” and “Super Intelligence,” and criticised The Wall Street Journal for continuing to use the old term.

Is this a new policy, or was it announced before? The October post builds on a September 30 executive order, “Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence,” which already directed federal agencies to adopt the new terminology in official communications and operations to the maximum extent permitted by law. The post goes further in tone, promising a formal ban.

Does the ban change existing laws or contracts? No. The September order expressly says previously issued regulations, existing government contracts, grants and historical archival records will not be retroactively altered. Changing the term in statutes would require Congress.

Does the ban apply to private companies, newspapers or the public? No. A federal executive order binds federal departments and agencies. Private companies, media outlets and members of the public remain free to use “artificial intelligence” and “AI.”

What happens next? The president’s science and technology adviser must send Congress proposed legislation defining “Super Intelligence” within 60 days of September 30, and agencies are expected to begin adopting the new terms in their correspondence, websites, reports and policy documents.
