President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he will respect the results of next week's midterm elections only "if they're honest elections," renewing a qualification that has shadowed his campaigns since 2020 and setting the terms, in his own words, for how he will respond if voters hand Congress to the Democrats. Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland as he headed to Texas to campaign, Trump said he would work with Democrats if Republicans lose control of Congress, but warned that, as president, he had a "strong" veto over legislation they might pass.

The remark, made seven days before the November 3 vote, instantly became the defining sound bite of the final week of the campaign. It came on a day when more than 30 million Americans had already cast early ballots, when polls showed Democrats favoured to retake the House, and when Trump himself was flying to the state where his party's grip looks most suddenly vulnerable: Texas, where Republican Ken Paxton is locked in a dead heat with Democrat James Talarico for a Senate seat Republicans have held for decades.

Key Points

• President Donald Trump said Tuesday he will respect the midterm results "if they're honest elections," speaking before flying to Texas.
• Trump said he would work with Democrats if Republicans lose Congress, but warned he has a "strong" veto over their legislation.
• He campaigned in Corpus Christi and Lubbock for Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton, who is tied with Democrat James Talarico.
• The comments revive questions about 2020, when Trump refused to concede defeat to Joe Biden and his supporters stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
• All 435 House seats and about a third of the Senate are on the ballot on November 3, with control of Congress and the rest of Trump's term at stake.

What Happened

Trump spoke to members of the press on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews on Tuesday morning, October 27, 2026, before departing for a double-header of Texas rallies. Asked whether he would accept the outcome of next week's elections, he answered that he would respect the results "if they're honest elections," according to AFP reporting of the exchange. It was a short answer, but it carried a long history: Trump has repeatedly made unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud, most notably after his defeat to Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, and he has never conceded that contest.

Pressed on the possibility of having to govern alongside a Democratic Congress, Trump struck a more transactional note. "I have a strong veto power. I hope it won't be needed. But it has happened with other presidents. In the end, deals are struck," he said, in remarks carried by LaPresse. The message was twofold: cooperation is possible, but the veto pen remains his ultimate backstop. It was also a tacit admission of what the polls have been saying for weeks — that a Democratic House, and possibly a Democratic Senate, is a realistic outcome on November 3.

Trump's Texas itinerary underlined why he chose this moment to talk about the legitimacy of the vote. He was scheduled to appear in Corpus Christi and later in Lubbock, where he would rally for Paxton, his endorsed candidate in one of the most closely watched Senate races in the country. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was expected to join him to show off a newly arrived oil tanker filled with Venezuelan crude destined for Texas refineries, according to a congressional aide and two US officials cited by TRT World — a piece of stagecraft designed to link the campaign to the administration's energy and foreign policy at once.

Background/Context

The "honest elections" formulation did not emerge from nowhere. Just a day earlier, on Monday, Trump announced on Truth Social that the United States would pay $1 million to anyone whose tip about voter fraud leads to an arrest and conviction, an offer made a week before the midterms and reported around the world. The White House has not announced a reporting mechanism or a funding source for the reward, and election experts have questioned both its practicality and its premise, noting that documented cases of voter fraud in American elections are rare.

Trump's relationship with election results has been the defining controversy of his political career. After losing the 2020 election, he refused to concede, continued to claim without evidence that it had been stolen, and pressed state and federal officials to overturn the outcome despite court rulings rejecting his challenges and election officials finding no evidence of widespread fraud sufficient to change the result. His efforts culminated in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol by his supporters as Congress met to certify Biden's victory. That history is why a two-word qualifier — "if they're honest" — lands so heavily in 2026: supporters hear a defence of election integrity, while critics hear a ready-made reason to dispute a loss.

The remarks also followed days of debate over Trump's calls for greater federal involvement in running elections, including his suggestion that Republicans should "take over" or "nationalize" election oversight. Under the US Constitution, the states are given the primary right to oversee elections, with limited input from the federal government, and that proposal drew swift criticism from election officials in both parties. Tuesday's comments can be read as a clarification of that push: not a takeover, in his framing, but a test — results he deems honest will be respected.

Trump's Honest Elections Test

What, exactly, counts as honest in Trump's test remains undefined, and that ambiguity is itself the story. The president has never laid out criteria for which results he would accept and which he would challenge, and his administration has in recent weeks pressed states for voter-registration data and argued that stricter measures are needed to ensure public confidence. Critics, including political experts and Democratic and some Republican election officials, view those moves as federal overreach. Supporters counter that aggressive scrutiny is the only way to restore trust after years of disputed claims.

Polling suggests the public is deeply sceptical. A Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll published earlier this week found only 28 per cent of respondents were "very" confident about how Trump would react to the midterm outcome, according to reports of the survey — a measure of how far the question of acceptance has moved from the margins of American politics to its centre. Seven in ten Americans, in the poll's headline finding, doubted he would accept the results. That scepticism now shapes the campaign itself: Democrats are warning that democracy is on the ballot, while Republicans argue that the real threat is a system voters cannot trust.

The stakes of the test are concrete. About 210 million registered voters will decide the balance of power in Congress on November 3. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for election, along with 35 of the Senate's 100 seats, including special elections in Florida and Ohio to fill vacancies left by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice-President JD Vance. Voters in 36 states will also elect governors. Republicans currently lead the Senate 53-47, and Texas has not elected a Democrat to statewide office since 1994 — a 32-year run that makes the Paxton-Talarico dead heat a genuine shock to the system.

Reactions/Quotes

"I will respect the result, provided the elections are fair," Trump told journalists before leaving for Texas, in the formulation carried by LaPresse's Washington dispatch. On the prospect of divided government, he added: "I have a strong veto power. I hope it won't be needed. But it has happened with other presidents. In the end, deals are struck."

The reaction from Democrats was swift in tone, if not yet in formal statements: the party has spent the final week of the campaign arguing that Trump's language is itself a warning. Election experts quoted in coverage of the remarks noted that Trump has repeatedly made unsubstantiated claims of mass voter fraud, and that the "honest elections" qualifier echoes the rhetoric that preceded the 2020 dispute. Republican strategists, meanwhile, have privately told reporters they are on edge about races from Alaska to South Carolina, in part because of voter discontent over tariffs and the Iran war's effect on inflation — a reminder that the acceptance question is unfolding against a difficult electoral map for the president's party.

Even some Republicans who support Trump have tried to create distance on the issue. In New Hampshire, Republican Senate candidate John Sununu said in an advertisement: "When the president's policies are bad for New Hampshire, I'll oppose them, just like I opposed the war in Iran and the trade war with Canada." It is a sign of how the final week is being fought: not only between parties, but between candidates who want Trump's voters and candidates who want to survive his unpopularity.

Why It Matters

Presidential acceptance of election results is normally a formality, not a headline. That it has become a headline again matters for three reasons. First, it shapes what happens after November 3: a close result in any battleground state will now be read through the lens of Tuesday's qualifier, and every legal challenge or recount will be fought in an atmosphere Trump himself has charged. Second, it shapes turnout: both parties are using the stakes — a referendum on Trump's presidency, in his own telling — to drive voters who might otherwise sit out a midterm. More than 30 million early ballots have already been cast, according to the University of Florida Election Lab, and the final week is traditionally when late-deciding voters break.

Third, it shapes governance. If Democrats win either chamber, they can obstruct Trump's policies, intensify oversight of his administration, and, as in his first term, potentially pursue impeachment — a scenario Trump himself raised this week. If Republicans hold Congress, the president's hand is strengthened for the final two years of his term. Either way, the veto warning matters: a Democratic Congress would need two-thirds majorities to override him, a bar that would make most of its agenda symbolic unless it can cut deals. Trump's own words — "in the end, deals are struck" — may be the most revealing line of the day, an acknowledgement that divided government, for all its friction, still has to function.

What Happens Next

The immediate calendar is crowded. Trump's Texas rallies in Corpus Christi and Lubbock take place on Tuesday evening, with Talarico holding a rival rally in Lubbock the same night. The House is expected to vote on Wednesday on the shutdown funding package the Senate passed late on Monday, a vote that will test whether the chamber can function at all in the final week of a campaign. Early voting continues in most states through October 30, and Election Day itself falls on Tuesday, November 3.

After that, the acceptance question becomes practical rather than rhetorical. Results in the closest Senate races — Texas, Kansas, Minnesota, South Carolina and others — may not be known on election night, and the counting of mail ballots in some states takes days. The country will then learn whether "if they're honest" was a rhetorical flourish or a reservation with consequences. For now, the president has said he will respect the results. The condition he attached is the story.

Frequently Asked Questions

What did Trump actually say about the midterm results?

Speaking before flying to Texas on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Trump said he would respect the results of next week's midterm elections "if they're honest elections," and said he would work with Democrats if Republicans lose Congress but warned he has a "strong" veto.

When are the 2026 midterm elections?

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026. All 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats are on the ballot, along with governors in 36 states. Early voting is already under way, with more than 30 million ballots cast before the final week.

Why are Trump's comments controversial?

Because of his refusal to concede the 2020 election and his repeated unsubstantiated claims of widespread fraud, critics read the "honest elections" qualifier as leaving room to dispute a loss, while supporters read it as a defence of election integrity.

What happens if Democrats win Congress?

Democrats could block Trump's judicial nominees and legislative agenda, intensify investigations and oversight, and potentially pursue impeachment, but Trump could veto their bills, and overriding a veto requires two-thirds majorities in both chambers.

What is happening in the Texas Senate race?

Republican Ken Paxton, backed by Trump, is tied with Democrat James Talarico in recent polling, an extraordinary position in a state that has not elected a Democrat statewide since 1994. Trump rallied for Paxton in Corpus Christi and Lubbock on Tuesday.
