One person is dead and six others are injured after the Elizabeth New Jersey shooting late on Monday night, October 26, 2026, when gunfire broke out on a residential street in Union County and a suspect fled the scene in a red sedan. Police cordoned off several blocks around Irvington Avenue and Elmwood Place, in the 400 block of Irvington Avenue, as detectives worked through the night collecting shell casings and searching for the gunman, who remained at large on Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the area shortly before 9:45 p.m. after reports that multiple people had been struck by gunfire, according to dispatch records cited by several outlets reporting on the case. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The surviving wounded were taken to University Hospital in Newark, a regional trauma centre, for emergency treatment. Authorities have not yet released the victims' identities, pending notification of their families, and have not announced a motive.

The shooting is the latest mass-casualty gun incident in the United States in a violent few days, coming just two days after a homecoming shooting near Florida A&M University in Tallahassee left 11 people wounded by gunfire. In Elizabeth, the immediate questions are stark: who opened fire, why, and where the suspect went after speeding west on Morris Avenue.

Key Points

• One person was killed and six others were injured in the Elizabeth, New Jersey shooting on Monday night, October 26, 2026, for a preliminary total of seven people shot.
• The gunfire was reported near Irvington Avenue and Elmwood Place, in the 400 block of Irvington Avenue, shortly before 9:45 p.m., according to dispatch records cited by outlets covering the case.
• Survivors were taken to University Hospital in Newark. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and the conditions of the wounded have not been officially detailed.
• Preliminary radio traffic described a suspect fleeing in a red sedan, possibly a Nissan, westbound on Morris Avenue, and said a long gun was believed to have been used. Police have not officially confirmed that description.
• The Union County Prosecutor's Office is leading the investigation with the Elizabeth Police Department. No arrests had been announced, and no motive had been given, as of Tuesday morning.

What Happened

The first reports described a chaotic, fast-moving scene. Initial dispatch accounts said at least four victims were found at the immediate scene: three with gunshot wounds to the legs and a fourth critically injured by a gunshot wound to the chest. As more police units arrived and secured the area, emergency personnel found more wounded people, bringing the preliminary total of people shot to at least seven, with one dead and six injured.

Video from the scene, shared widely on social media and shown in television helicopter coverage, showed dozens of emergency vehicles, including police cruisers from multiple municipalities and ambulances, lining the streets. Crime scene technicians placed at least two dozen orange evidence markers across the area to mark shell casings and other physical evidence spanning several blocks.

While officers set up command posts and taped off the main crime scene, dispatchers also received a report of another gunshot victim near 100 Union Street, suffering from a leg wound. Detectives are working to determine whether that person was hit in the same continuous outbreak of gunfire or in a separate, nearby incident. That uncertainty is one reason officials have been careful about the final casualty count, which remains preliminary.

One early report cited an 8:30 p.m. time for the first shots, while the dispatch records most outlets relied on put the emergency response shortly before 9:45 p.m. The difference is a reminder that, in the first hours after a mass shooting, even basic details can shift as police reconcile radio traffic, 911 calls and hospital arrivals. US News Pulse is reporting the 9:45 p.m. dispatch time as the best-supported account, and will update this article if police issue an official timeline.

Background and Context

Elizabeth is the county seat of Union County, New Jersey, a densely populated city just south-west of Newark and across the Hudson from New York City. Its residential streets, like Irvington Avenue, mix single-family homes, apartment buildings and small businesses, and a shooting that spans several blocks therefore touches many households at once. Residents near the scene described hearing repeated gunfire and then watching emergency vehicles converge on the neighbourhood late at night.

Mass shootings in American cities are investigated in a recognisable sequence, and Elizabeth followed it on Monday night: secure the scene, treat and transport the wounded, preserve evidence, canvass for witnesses and video, and alert neighbouring agencies about a fleeing vehicle. The involvement of the county prosecutor's office, rather than city police alone, is normal in New Jersey for a fatal shooting with multiple victims, because prosecutors lead homicide investigations in the state.

The case also arrives in a grim national context. On Saturday night, October 24, a shooting near Florida A&M University's homecoming celebrations in Tallahassee, Florida, wounded 11 people by gunfire and injured a 12th person who was hurt fleeing. A 15-year-old was later arrested and charged as an adult. That case and the Elizabeth case are not linked, but together they underline how quickly a public gathering or an ordinary evening on a residential street can turn into a mass-casualty investigation.

Elizabeth New Jersey Shooting: What Police Know So Far

What police have confirmed, through the prosecutor's office notification and the Elizabeth Police Department's confirmation of a fatal shooting, is narrower than what has circulated online, and the gap matters. Confirmed, in outline: a fatal shooting with multiple victims on Irvington Avenue on Monday night; one person dead; survivors taken to a Newark hospital; and an active investigation led by the Union County Prosecutor's Office.

Not yet officially confirmed: the identity of the shooter, the make and model of the getaway car beyond the preliminary radio description of a red sedan, possibly a Nissan, the type of weapon beyond the radio-traffic reference to a long gun, and any motive. No victim names have been released, and no suspect description beyond the vehicle has been issued in the reports published so far.

That distinction is important for residents. A red sedan travelling west on Morris Avenue is a lead, not a confirmed identification, and police have asked anyone with information to contact them rather than approach a vehicle or person they believe may be involved. Tips can often be submitted anonymously to the prosecutor's office or to local police, and investigators are expected to appeal for doorbell and surveillance video from the Irvington Avenue area.

Reactions and Quotes

Official reaction so far has been limited, as is usual while next of kin are notified and the scene is processed. A law enforcement source, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation is active, told one outlet: "This is a tragedy for our city, and we are committed to finding those responsible."

Residents, by contrast, spoke immediately, in videos and posts from the scene. One local, sharing a video of the police response, wrote: "4 people shot right by my house! This is too close to home for me." Another clip was shared with the remark that the shooting had "choppers out" over Elizabeth, a reference to the television helicopter circling the multi-block crime scene.

The Elizabeth Police Department confirmed a fatal shooting but did not immediately provide further details, according to one wire-style report on the case, and the Union County Prosecutor's Office had not, as of the latest reports, announced any arrest or released a formal statement naming the victims. That silence is frustrating for a community waiting for answers, but it is also standard in the first hours of a homicide investigation, when releasing a name or a theory too early can compromise witness accounts.

Why It Matters

The Elizabeth shooting matters first, and most, because seven people were shot on an ordinary residential street, one of them fatally, and the person responsible had not been caught hours later. For the families of the victims, the coming days will bring hospital updates, funeral arrangements and, for witnesses, interviews with detectives. For neighbours, the cordons and evidence markers are a visible reminder that the investigation is still unfolding on their doorsteps.

It matters more broadly because it tests the systems cities rely on after gun violence: trauma care, witness cooperation, and the speed with which a fleeing-vehicle lead can be turned into an arrest. University Hospital in Newark, where the wounded were taken, is the region's major trauma centre, and the survival and recovery of the six injured people will depend in part on the care they receive there in the first hours and days.

It also matters for public safety in Union County. A suspect described as fleeing in a vehicle, possibly armed with a long gun, raises an immediate concern for residents and for neighbouring police departments, who must balance warning the public with avoiding panic or a mistaken identification. Police have urged residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity, and avoid the crime scene while investigators work.

What Happens Next

In the next 24 to 48 hours, expect the investigation to move in three directions at once. First, detectives will finish processing the multi-block scene, cataloguing shell casings and other evidence, and will seek video from homes, businesses and traffic cameras along Irvington Avenue, Elmwood Place and Morris Avenue. Second, they will interview the survivors, once medically able, and witnesses who were on the street on Monday night. Third, the prosecutor's office is expected to confirm the victims' identities, once families have been notified, and to give an official casualty count and timeline.

An arrest, if it comes quickly, will probably follow a vehicle lead or a witness identification rather than a public appeal alone. If it does not, police may release a fuller suspect or vehicle description and ask the public for help, as they did in the Tallahassee case, where an arrest followed within a day. Either way, the case is likely to remain in the news through the week, and US News Pulse will update this article as police confirm new details.

Residents with information about the shooting or the suspect's whereabouts are asked to contact the Union County Prosecutor's Office or the Elizabeth Police Department. Anyone who was in the Irvington Avenue area on Monday night and saw or heard anything, even something that seemed minor at the time, may hold a detail that matters.
