President Donald Trump has declared that Brazil's presidential election "looked like another rigged election," throwing the weight of the White House behind unfounded doubts about a result decided by more than four million votes. The claim, made to reporters on Monday, October 26, 2026, came a day after 80-year-old leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won a historic fourth term, defeating right-wing senator Flávio Bolsonaro in a runoff that ended a string of right-wing victories across Latin America.

Trump offered no evidence for his allegation, and the numbers tell a different story: Lula won 51.79 percent of valid votes, taking 64.2 million ballots against Bolsonaro's 59.8 million. Even Bolsonaro's own Liberal Party has since acknowledged the result, saying in a statement signed by party president Valdemar Costa Neto: "We recognize the presidential election results."

Key Points

• Donald Trump said Brazil's presidential runoff "looked like another rigged election" on October 26, 2026, without presenting evidence.
• Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won a fourth term on October 25 with 51.79 percent of the vote, beating Flávio Bolsonaro by more than 4 million ballots.
• Bolsonaro has refused to concede and has vowed to seek an annulment, blaming a Supreme Court decision to extend voting by two hours.
• Fewer than 35,000 votes, about 0.03 percent of the total, were cast during the disputed two-hour extension, according to an analysis of electoral records.
• Bolsonaro's Liberal Party later acknowledged the result, while the White House and State Department have so far refrained from formally recognising Lula's win.

What Happened

Trump made his remarks on Monday as he travelled to a midterm campaign rally in Corinth, Mississippi. Asked whether he believed the Brazilian election had been fair, he answered: "Well, it looked terrible to me. I thought it was terrible-looking. I didn't take sides, but it looked like another rigged election, frankly."

"I didn't take sides, but it was a terrible look for the world," he continued. "It's another election — you know, elections have to be indisputable. And it looked very bad to me. I didn't take sides, I didn't endorse anybody or anything, but I watched the election and it looks so — so corrupt. So terrible."

Pressed on whether he intended to intervene, Trump replied: "Well, I'm not running Brazil, I'm running the USA. And I just thought that the election was — I like Lula. I get along with him very well. I just think it had a very bad look, the election, the way it was tabulated. You know, with the extension given, it was very strange."

The remarks came after Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, refused to concede defeat and pledged to contest the result. His complaint centres on a last-minute decision by Brazil's Supreme Court to extend voting by two hours, a move he claims sowed confusion at polling stations across the country.

Both campaigns had in fact asked for voting hours to be extended, citing public transport problems and bad weather in southern Brazil that threatened to keep voters away. The timing of the court's decision, however, meant some polling stations had already closed and begun counting ballots when they were ordered to reopen.

Background and Context

Lula's victory was a stunning comeback. Bolsonaro had emerged as the leading candidate in the first round earlier in October, and few expected the 80-year-old former factory worker and union leader to recover. Instead, he won the runoff decisively, securing a fourth non-consecutive term at the head of Latin America's largest economy.

The result broke a run of right-wing victories across the region that had installed ideological allies of Trump in countries such as Colombia, Bolivia and Chile. Bolsonaro's loss denies the White House a powerful like-minded partner in Brasília, and it is the latest reminder that the region's politics rarely move in one direction for long.

Brazil's electoral system is one of the most automated in the world. Voters cast ballots on electronic machines, results are tallied quickly, and the country's electoral court has repeatedly defended the integrity of the process. International observers have long described Brazilian elections as credible, and no credible evidence of fraud has emerged from the 2026 contest.

The dispute over the two-hour extension does not change the arithmetic. According to an analysis of electoral records by Insper professor Pedro Burgos, fewer than 35,000 votes — around 0.03 percent of the total — were cast during the extra two hours. Even if every one of those votes had gone to Bolsonaro, Lula's margin of roughly 4.4 million votes would have been untouched.

Trump Brazil Election Rigged Claim Under Scrutiny

Trump's choice of words matters because of his own history. Since his 2020 election loss, he has repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that elections he dislikes are rigged, and his supporters have echoed those claims in the United States and abroad. His Brazil remarks follow the same pattern: a sweeping allegation, no proof offered, and a focus on process details — the extension, the tabulation — rather than on votes that could plausibly change the outcome.

The claim also sits awkwardly with the position of Bolsonaro's own party. On Monday, the Liberal Party said it recognised the result, even as it added: "But we believe the issues raised need to be properly clarified." Bolsonaro himself has not commented publicly since that statement, but he said earlier on Monday that he would comply with a federal police order to hand over his passports after visiting his father, who is under house arrest, and denied he was planning to flee Brazil.

Trump did not formally endorse a candidate in the Brazilian contest, although Reuters has reported that officials from his State Department led a campaign to return the Bolsonaros to power. His criticism, he insisted, was not a personal slight against Lula. "I like Lula. I get along with him very well," he said.

Reactions and Quotes

The reaction inside Brazil and beyond has largely gone against Trump's framing. Several of Bolsonaro's regional allies moved quickly to congratulate Lula and recognise the result. Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella, a Trump ally who supported Bolsonaro during the campaign, wrote on social media that Lula had won the election.

"When the people speak at the ballot box, their will is respected because it is sacred," De La Espriella wrote. "That's what democracy is all about!"

Chile's right-wing president, José Antonio Kast, called Lula on October 25 and offered his congratulations. "Chile and Brazil have a lot of shared future ahead, and we will continue working on an agenda that strengthens relations between our countries," he wrote on X.

In the United States, Democratic lawmakers congratulated Lula even as the White House and the State Department refrained from issuing statements officially recognising the results. Representative Ro Khanna, Democrat of California, wrote on X: "People all across the world are fighting back against extremism. With Lula in Brazil, they just won. Trump must respect the results and not undermine Brazil's elections."

Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called on "all to respect the electoral process" and wrote: "Last night, the people spoke in one of the world's largest democracies. Congratulations to Brazilian President Lula on his reelection."

Why It Matters

Brazil is not a peripheral country. It is the largest economy in Latin America, a major agricultural exporter, a key voice in global climate talks, and home to more than 200 million people. Who governs it shapes trade, Amazon rainforest policy, and the balance of power across the Americas.

Trump's intervention also matters for what it signals about the week ahead in American politics. With the US midterm elections just seven days away on November 3, the president is campaigning hard for Republican candidates, and his language about elections — at home and abroad — sets the tone for how his supporters will treat results they dislike. The same week has already seen a $1 million voter-fraud reward offer and a court fight over Alaska's Senate certification, and the Brazil remarks add a foreign chapter to a domestic argument.

For Lula, the challenge now is governing a divided country. He won with barely half the vote, against a movement that retains deep support, a powerful congressional bloc, and a grievance about the election itself. His fourth term will be judged on whether he can hold together a coalition that spans the left and the centre while delivering on the economy.

What Happens Next

Bolsonaro has said he will seek an annulment of the election, but legal experts note the scale of the task: overturning a 4.4 million-vote margin over a two-hour extension that produced fewer than 35,000 ballots is an extraordinarily steep climb, and Brazil's electoral court has historically moved fast to certify results. Any challenge will need to clear a high evidentiary bar.

The White House's next move is also being watched. The United States has yet to issue a formal statement recognising Lula's victory, and whether Trump follows his party's allies in Latin America — or doubles down on the "rigged" claim — will shape the tone of US-Brazil relations in the months ahead.

Lula, for his part, claimed victory in a speech on October 25, celebrating a decisive result. His inauguration and the formation of a new cabinet will be the next milestones, along with the first tests of his relationship with a Washington that has so far kept its distance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Trump say Brazil's election was rigged?

Yes. On October 26, 2026, Trump told reporters that Lula's runoff victory "looked like another rigged election" and described the vote as "so corrupt, so terrible," while offering no evidence.

Who won Brazil's presidential election?

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won a fourth term on October 25, 2026, with 51.79 percent of valid votes — 64.2 million ballots against 59.8 million for Flávio Bolsonaro.

Why is Bolsonaro contesting the result?

Bolsonaro points to a Supreme Court decision to extend voting by two hours, which he says sowed confusion. However, fewer than 35,000 votes were cast in that window, far too few to change a 4.4 million-vote margin.

Has Bolsonaro's party accepted the result?

Yes. The Liberal Party said in a statement signed by its president, Valdemar Costa Neto: "We recognize the presidential election results," while asking that the issues raised be clarified.

Has the United States formally recognised Lula's win?

Not yet. The White House and the State Department had refrained from issuing formal recognition statements as of October 27, even as Democratic lawmakers and several Latin American leaders congratulated Lula.
