The Jay-Z Super Bowl halftime show is officially happening. The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced on Monday, October 26, 2026, that Jay-Z will headline the Apple Music Super Bowl LXI Halftime Show at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on February 14, 2027. The announcement was made at the start of halftime during Monday Night Football, as the Dallas Cowboys played the Philadelphia Eagles, turning one of the season's biggest regular-season games into the launchpad for the biggest concert of the next football season.

Key Points

• Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl LXI halftime show on February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
• The show is the Apple Music Super Bowl LXI Halftime Show and will air on ESPN, ABC and Disney+, with streaming on NFL+.
• It is Jay-Z's first time headlining the halftime show, after years of shaping it behind the scenes through Roc Nation.
• NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said headlining was his one request when the league first partnered with Roc Nation.
• The booking caps Jay-Z's 2026 "Jay-Z 30" concert run, celebrating 30 years since his debut album, Reasonable Doubt.

What Happened

The announcement arrived exactly where Super Bowl news lands best: in the middle of a primetime game. During the Cowboys-Eagles matchup on Monday Night Football, Apple Music shared the official news, with a black-and-white video showing Jay-Z sitting in the stands at SoFi Stadium with a goat on his lap, a playful nod to his long-standing reputation as one of the greatest rappers of all time. Within minutes, the booking was the dominant story in American entertainment, sports and music news, and it gave the February 14, 2027 game its first headline act months before the teams are known.

Super Bowl LXI will be played at SoFi Stadium, the same venue where Jay-Z had just closed his "Jay-Z 30" concert series on October 23 and 24, 2026. That timing is no accident. He returns to the same stage less than four months later, this time for an audience measured not in tens of thousands in the building, but in more than 100 million watching around the world. The game will air on ESPN, ABC and Disney+, with mobile streaming available through NFL+.

Background and Context

Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, is a 25-time Grammy Award winner with 89 nominations, the second-most in Grammy history behind his wife, Beyoncé, who has herself performed at two Super Bowls. His catalog runs from his 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt, through The Blueprint and The Black Album, and includes songs such as "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)," "99 Problems" and "Empire State of Mind," his collaboration with Alicia Keys. He became the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017 and entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. Reasonable Doubt was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame last year.

His business career is just as large as his music career. He co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records and founded Roc Nation in 2008, building it into an entertainment company that works with artists and athletes. That company is central to this story, because Roc Nation has partnered with the NFL since 2019 to advise on and help produce the league's entertainment presentations, including the Super Bowl halftime show. In that time, the stage has gone to Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, The Weeknd, Rihanna, Usher, Kendrick Lamar and, most recently, Bad Bunny.

That history also explains why this announcement felt both surprising and inevitable. Jay-Z had famously rapped about turning down a Super Bowl invitation on The Carters' 2018 track "APESHIT," a stance widely linked to his support for Colin Kaepernick. When the Roc Nation partnership began, he made his own position clear. "If this is about me performing at the Super Bowl, then we can just end this conversation now," he recalled telling Goodell at the time. Seven years later, he is ready to perform after all, and the league is presenting the moment as the natural conclusion of that partnership.

Jay-Z Super Bowl Halftime Show: What the Performance Could Look Like

No setlist has been announced, and Jay-Z has not yet said who, if anyone, will join him as a guest. But the shape of the show is already easy to imagine, because his 2026 concerts have effectively served as a rehearsal. His "Jay-Z 30" run began with three massive hometown shows in New York in July, including three sold-out nights at Yankee Stadium, continued with a two-night stint in London on September 4 and 5 and one night in Paris on September 10, and closed with two shows at SoFi Stadium itself. Those final shows brought out a Destiny's Child reunion in the crowd, as well as special appearances on stage by John Legend, DJ Khaled, Scarface, Too Short, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and his daughter Blue Ivy Carter.

The London dates may be the closest preview of a halftime set. There, Jay-Z brought out a mini reunion of the Fugees, with Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the kind of television moment the halftime slot exists for. Reports ahead of the announcement said Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber had also been considered for the slot, before Jay-Z, who through Roc Nation has the final say on halftime performers, settled on himself after weeks of deliberation. The Valentine's Day date has already fuelled one obvious piece of speculation: whether Beyoncé, who performed at SoFi-adjacent Super Bowl stages before, could appear as a guest. Nothing has been confirmed, and for now that remains fan speculation, not news.

Reactions and Quotes

Jay-Z framed the booking as the culmination of a three-decade career. "From 'Reasonable Doubt' to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey," he said in a statement. "Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world's biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true." The line deliberately ties the performance to the anniversary at the heart of his 2026 tour: 30 years since Reasonable Doubt, and 25 years since The Blueprint.

Goodell, meanwhile, revealed that this had been his hope from the very start of the league's relationship with Roc Nation. "For several years, we've had the privilege of working closely with JAY-Z and Roc Nation, and I've seen the extraordinary impact he has had on the Super Bowl Halftime Show," Goodell said. "When we first reached an agreement with Roc Nation to produce the show, I had just one request: that JAY-Z take the stage himself one day, whenever the moment felt right to him. I couldn't be more excited for fans around the world to experience the artistry, creativity and cultural impact he will bring to the Super Bowl stage."

The reaction online was immediate, mixing celebration with the debate that always follows a halftime pick. Some fans treated it as long overdue for an artist of his stature, others debated which songs could possibly fit into a roughly 13-minute set, and many more began trading dream guest lists. That debate is part of the point: the halftime show is now a months-long cultural conversation, not just a 13-minute intermission, and the announcement is designed to start it early.

Why It Matters

The halftime show is the largest single musical stage in the United States, and its recent audience numbers explain why the choice matters far beyond music fans. Bad Bunny headlined last season's halftime show, which averaged 128.2 million viewers. Kendrick Lamar's 2025 performance drew 133.5 million, setting a record for a Super Bowl halftime show. A Jay-Z set, drawing on 30 years of hits and a career that spans hip-hop, business and culture, is positioned to challenge those numbers, and to give the NFL a headline act who needs no introduction to any generation of viewer.

It also matters because of who is making the choice. For years, Jay-Z has been the most powerful figure shaping the show without ever appearing on it, and critics have noted the unusual position of an artist booking himself for the world's biggest stage. Supporters counter that Roc Nation's run of halftime shows, from Shakira and Jennifer Lopez through Rihanna and Kendrick Lamar, speaks for itself, and that the producer stepping in front of the stage is a fitting end to that era. Either way, the booking changes the conversation around the show itself: it is no longer just a performance, but a statement about who controls American pop culture's biggest platform.

There is a commercial angle too. Reports put the Roc Nation deal at $5 million a year, signed in 2019 and renewed in 2024 for another five years, and Puck tallied the tour numbers behind the announcement: three sold-out nights at Yankee Stadium in July grossed more than $42 million, and a Paris stadium date took in $12 million. A Super Bowl set reliably sends an artist's streaming numbers soaring in the hours after the show, as Bad Bunny's songs did last season, and Jay-Z's catalog, which spans streaming-era and pre-streaming hits alike, is unusually well placed to benefit.

What Happens Next

Between now and February 14, 2027, expect the slow drip of halftime news that has become its own annual tradition: guest speculation, rehearsal reports, a trailer, and eventually a setlist debate that will dominate social media in Super Bowl week. The NFL and Apple Music have not announced a guest list, a creative director, or a setlist, and Jay-Z has not said whether the show will lean on his anniversary tour, his classic albums, or a mix of both. The first concrete details are likely to arrive in early 2027, when the league begins its formal Super Bowl week promotion.

For fans, the practical details are already clear: Super Bowl LXI takes place on Sunday, February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, and the halftime show will air on ESPN, ABC and Disney+. The teams, of course, will not be known until the playoffs conclude in January 2027. But the halftime headliner is settled, and that alone guarantees that the conversation around the game will run for the next three and a half months.
