Meta's record $95 billion AI raise led a single extraordinary day of artificial intelligence spending on Monday, October 26, 2026, as SpaceX lined up about $40 billion in chip financing and Broadcom arranged a reported $63 billion financing deal for chips bound for Anthropic. Together, the three announcements totalled about $198 billion, a figure that captures just how capital-hungry the race to build AI has become.

Key Points

• Meta plans to raise up to $95 billion: about $35 billion in immediate public offerings plus up to $60 billion through an at-the-market share sale programme.
• SpaceX said an Apollo Global Management affiliate will buy AI chips and server hardware and lease them to the company, with total principal payments of about $40 billion.
• Broadcom arranged a reported $63 billion financing deal with major banks to pay for chips destined for Anthropic, according to market reporting.
• Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom expressed interest in buying up to $5 billion of Meta shares combined, raising questions about circular capital in the AI industry.
• Meta shares fell about 1.4% in morning trading on October 26, even as chip stocks rallied, showing investors are torn between AI excitement and dilution fears.

What Happened

Meta announced its plan on Monday, October 26, alongside a wave of other AI financing news. The company has launched public offerings worth about $35 billion in common and preferred stock, including $22.5 billion in common stock and $12.5 billion in depositary shares representing preferred stock. It also plans a separate at-the-market programme worth up to $60 billion, which would let it sell shares directly into the open market over time.

The larger programme will begin only after Meta's new non-voting Class C shares start trading, which is expected in the first quarter of 2027. The company said it has not yet finalised the timing and terms of that sale. The structure matters: non-voting shares let Meta raise huge sums without significantly weakening founder Mark Zuckerberg's voting control.

Separately on the same day, SpaceX said an affiliate of Apollo Global Management will buy AI chips and server hardware and lease them to Elon Musk's rockets-to-AI company, in a deal with total principal payments of about $40 billion. Market reporting also described a $63 billion financing arrangement involving Broadcom and banks including Bank of America, Blackstone, Citigroup and Morgan Stanley, to pay for chips destined for Anthropic. Anthropic itself had just filed its own blockbuster prospectus for a Nasdaq listing under the ticker "ANT".

Background and Context

Meta has been pouring money into chips and data centres to compete better with OpenAI and Anthropic. The company recently raised the lower end of its 2026 capital expenditure forecast, putting the range at $135 billion to $145 billion. It reported $64.6 billion in quarterly revenue, yet its AI infrastructure ambitions are creating financing needs well beyond what even a business of that size generates in cash in a single quarter.

Reporting on the fundraising noted that Meta has committed about $825 billion in future spending, largely for data centres, AI infrastructure and cloud computing power. It recorded negative free cash flow of $2.12 billion in the third quarter, compared with positive free cash flow of $10.63 billion a year earlier. That swing, more than any single announcement, explains why a company with one of the world's most profitable advertising businesses is now turning to shareholders for tens of billions of dollars.

Meta is not alone in changing how AI expansion is funded. Earlier in 2026, Alphabet increased the size of its equity offerings to $84.75 billion. The latest fundraising, Reuters reporting noted, underscores a shift among big technology companies that are increasingly tapping debt markets and raising equity to bolster AI infrastructure, having previously relied on cash to fund their investments. The era in which Big Tech paid for everything out of operating cash flow is, for AI at least, over.

Meta $95 Billion AI Raise: How the Money Is Structured

The Meta $95 billion AI raise is deliberately split into two parts. The first, about $35 billion, is conventional: underwritten public offerings of common and preferred stock that can be completed quickly. The second, up to $60 billion, is opportunistic: an at-the-market programme that lets Meta dribble shares into the market when conditions are favourable, rather than pricing one giant block at a single moment.

The involvement of Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom as potential cornerstone investors, with interest of up to $5 billion in total for Class A shares, is the detail that has drawn the most scrutiny. Their funding interest adds to concerns about an increasingly circular flow of capital in the AI industry, as chip suppliers help finance the expansion of one of their biggest customers. In plain terms, the companies selling the picks and shovels are helping to fund the miner, who then buys more picks and shovels.

Reactions and Quotes

Analysts were quick to note the tension in the announcement. "We expect investors to continue to question the financing and potential for future capital raises," William Blair analysts said in a note. "Overall, we believe the financing reinforces both Meta's confidence in the long-term returns from AI investment and the increasingly capital-intensive nature of pursuing that opportunity."

Market strategists took a more upbeat view of the broader day. "The market needed this, just like it needed SpaceX," Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, said of Anthropic's filing, calling it "a big confidence booster" and adding that he anticipated demand would be there because investors had been waiting and talking about the offering for a long time.

The market reaction split along exactly those lines. Meta shares fell about 1.4% in morning trading as investors weighed dilution, while semiconductor stocks rallied: the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 2.8%, Nvidia gained about 2.4%, Broadcom rose 2.3% and AMD jumped 2.8%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 146.42 points to 52,361.58, the S&P 500 gained 0.70% to 7,676.77 and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.82% to 26,169.38.

Why It Matters

This matters for three reasons. First, scale: $198 billion of announcements in a single day is a reminder that AI infrastructure is now a macroeconomic story, not just a technology story. It affects power grids, construction, chip supply chains and capital markets, and it will shape the Federal Reserve's thinking about investment, productivity and inflation as it meets on October 27-28.

Second, funding: if the world's most profitable internet companies must raise equity and lease equipment to keep building, smaller AI companies face a far harder path. The financing gap could accelerate consolidation, leaving a handful of giants and their closest partners standing, while others are forced to rent capacity rather than own it.

Third, trust: the circular-capital question will not go away. When chipmakers invest in their customers, and customers commit to buying those chipmakers' products, investors must judge whether demand is genuinely independent or partly manufactured by the financing itself. That is the question hanging over every AI earnings report this week, including Alphabet and Microsoft on Wednesday and Amazon on Thursday.

What Happens Next

In the near term, investors will watch whether Meta's $35 billion offering is absorbed smoothly and whether it gives firmer timing for the $60 billion programme once Class C shares begin trading in early 2027. Anthropic's path to a listing will test whether public markets will value an AI lab near the $2 trillion figure discussed around its filing.

Above all, the next test is earnings. If Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon show that AI spending is converting into revenue growth, the $198 billion day will be remembered as a turning point. If they do not, it may be remembered as the day the AI boom's financing became too big to ignore.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Meta raising $95 billion?

Meta is raising up to $95 billion to fund its AI infrastructure expansion, including chips, data centres and computing power, as it competes with OpenAI and Anthropic and pursues personal superintelligence, agents, enterprise products and AI glasses.

How is Meta's $95 billion raise structured?

About $35 billion comes from immediate public offerings of common and preferred stock, and up to $60 billion from a planned at-the-market programme using new non-voting Class C shares expected to begin trading in the first quarter of 2027.

What is SpaceX's $40 billion AI deal?

An Apollo Global Management affiliate will buy AI chips and server hardware and lease them to SpaceX, with total principal payments of about $40 billion, giving SpaceX computing capacity without buying the equipment outright.

Why are Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom investing in Meta?

The three chipmakers expressed interest in buying up to $5 billion of Meta shares combined as cornerstone investors. Critics say this highlights circular capital in AI, since chip suppliers are helping fund a major customer that buys their chips.

Does this mean AI spending is unsustainable?

Not necessarily, but it shows AI has become far more capital-intensive. Whether the spending pays off depends on whether this week's earnings from Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon show AI investments turning into real revenue growth.
