The Milwaukee Brewers are one win away from the first World Series championship in franchise history after a ruthless 10-1 demolition of the Tampa Bay Rays in World Series Game 3 on Monday night, October 26, 2026, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. Milwaukee leads the best-of-seven series 3-0, and a victory in Game 4 on Tuesday night would complete a sweep and end a wait that stretches back to the Brewers' only previous World Series appearance in 1982.

What had been a tense, low-scoring contest for four innings exploded in the fifth, when Milwaukee scored eight runs, all with two outs, to turn a 2-0 lead into a 10-0 rout. The Rays, playing their first home World Series game since 2008, never recovered, managing only three hits all night and a single run in the ninth inning.

Key Points

• Milwaukee beat Tampa Bay 10-1 in World Series Game 3 on October 26, 2026, and now leads the series 3-0.
• The Brewers scored eight runs in the fifth inning, all with two outs — a first in World Series history for two-out runs in a single inning.
• Jackson Chourio went 4 for 5 and William Contreras went 3 for 5 as Milwaukee collected 16 hits and held Tampa Bay to three.
• Rookie left-hander Robert Gasser allowed one hit in six shutout innings and faced the minimum 18 batters through six.
• Game 4 is on Tuesday, October 27, at 8 p.m. ET at Tropicana Field, live on FOX, with Milwaukee one win from a first title.

What Happened

For four innings, Game 3 looked like the tight, nervous baseball that had defined the first two games in Milwaukee, both won narrowly by the Brewers. Tampa Bay starter Freddy Peralta, a former Brewer traded to the Rays during the season, held his old club in check early, and Milwaukee starter Robert Gasser was even better, retiring batter after batter without allowing a run.

Milwaukee broke through in the third inning. Chourio singled, Jake Bauers walked, and Christian Yelich drove in the first run with a single to left field. William Contreras followed with another run-scoring single, helped by a misplay in right field that allowed Bauers to score from second, and the Brewers led 2-0.

The decisive moment came in the fifth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Rays manager Kevin Cash replaced Peralta with left-handed reliever Cam Booser. Brice Turang, facing a two-strike count, lined a hard-hit ball up the middle. Rays shortstop Taylor Walls got a glove on the nasty short hop but could not hold it, and two runs scored. That single opened the floodgates.

What followed was a relentless sequence of run-scoring hits: Garrett Mitchell singled in a run, Cooper Pratt and Sal Frelick doubled in runs, David Hamilton singled in another, and Chourio, batting for the second time in the inning, doubled in the eighth run of the frame. By the middle of the fifth, Milwaukee led 10-0, and the sellout crowd at Tropicana Field, which had waited 18 years for a home World Series game, fell silent.

Gasser, meanwhile, was in complete control. He allowed a leadoff single to Yandy Díaz in the first inning, then retired 14 batters in a row before a walk to Victor Mesa Jr. to start the sixth. He finished six shutout innings on just one hit, one walk and three strikeouts, becoming the first left-hander to face the minimum 18 batters through six innings of a World Series game since Sandy Koufax did it for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1965.

Tampa Bay finally scored in the ninth, when Cedric Mullins came home on a Yandy Díaz double off Brandon Woodruff, making the final score 10-1. It was the largest World Series winning margin since Kansas City beat San Francisco 10-0 in Game 6 in 2014 — and the Giants won the title the following night, a precedent Milwaukee will hope to repeat on Tuesday.

Background and Context

The 2026 World Series is a matchup of two clubs chasing a first championship. Milwaukee, which set a franchise record with 103 regular-season wins, had never won a World Series, losing its only previous appearance in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1982, when the Brewers were still an American League team. Tampa Bay, founded in 1998, lost its two previous World Series, to Philadelphia in 2008 and to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020, the latter played at a neutral site during the pandemic season.

Milwaukee's road to the Fall Classic has been remarkably efficient. The Brewers are now 10-1 in this postseason: they beat San Diego 3-1 in the division series, swept the Dodgers in four games in the National League Championship Series, and have now won the first three games of the World Series. Six of those ten wins have come by one run and two more by two runs, which makes the Game 3 blowout the exception rather than the rule.

Tampa Bay arrived in St. Petersburg in a difficult position after losing the first two games in Milwaukee, 3-2 and 5-4, in both cases with the tying run 90 feet from home plate in the late innings. The Rays had hoped that returning to Tropicana Field, where they tied Milwaukee for the best home record in baseball at 55-26 during the regular season, would change the series. Instead, they now need to win four consecutive games — starting on Tuesday — to claim the title.

The setting made the night even more emotional for Tampa Bay supporters. Hurricanes ripped the roof off Tropicana Field, causing damage so extensive that repairs cost $59.7 million, and the Rays played the entire 2025 season away from home at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. Monday was therefore not just a World Series game but a homecoming for a 38-year-old ballpark that many feared might never host baseball again. The crowd arrived loud and hopeful; by the fifth inning, many were watching a coronation in progress for the visiting team.

Brewers Rays World Series Game 3: The Eight-Run Fifth That Broke Tampa Bay

The fifth inning will be remembered as the moment this World Series tilted decisively. It was not a home-run barrage — Milwaukee has hit only one home run in the entire series, Sal Frelick's game-tying shot in the sixth inning of Game 2 — but a display of relentless, professional hitting. Seven two-out hits in one inning had never happened before in a World Series, and the eight two-out runs were also a first.

The turning point was as much about Tampa Bay's small mistakes as Milwaukee's hitting. Junior Caminero, fielding Contreras' grounder in the hole in the third inning, threw late to second base for a force play instead of taking the simpler out at first, extending the inning. In the fifth, Walls' near-miss on Turang's grounder, a ball hit at 106 mph that took a difficult hop, turned a two-run lead into a four-run lead and left the Rays' bullpen with no margin for error. Within minutes, there was no margin left at all.

Milwaukee's approach has been consistent all series: put the ball in play, run the bases aggressively, and trust a deep pitching staff. The Brewers led the American League's opposing dugout in stolen bases during the regular season with 164, while Milwaukee ranked fifth in baseball with 162, and both teams like to run. In Game 3, however, it was patience and contact hitting that did the damage, with all but one Milwaukee starter collecting at least one hit.

Reactions and Quotes

Christian Yelich, the Brewers' veteran outfielder, described the fifth inning as a team effort built on one good at-bat after another. Speaking to FOX after the game, he said: "Just passing the baton to each other, you know. Brice grinding on that at-bat against a really tough lefty, and just capitalizing on that opportunity right there. We laid off some great pitches, and then after that it was just good at-bat after good at-bat after good at-bat. It just kept going."

Yelich also warned against celebrating too early, with Game 4 coming less than 24 hours later. He said: "Just be ready to lock it in, be ready to go tomorrow. You know, we're playing a good team. We gotta stay focused and be ready to rock. Their place will be bumping again, and we gotta come in here and do our job."

Gasser, the rookie starter who dominated for six innings, was more measured about his own performance than the occasion. He said: "It was awesome. We're going to enjoy tonight. It was a great team win. But we've got work to do."

For Tampa Bay, the mood was understandably different. Peralta, charged with five runs on seven hits in four and two-thirds innings, saw a strong postseason run end abruptly. The former Brewer had rebuilt his season after being traded by the New York Mets at the deadline, and he said earlier in the playoffs that his confidence had returned after a difficult spell in New York. On Monday, the Brewers' hitters gave him no room to recover once the fifth inning unravelled.

Manager Kevin Cash, who had promised before Game 3 that the Rays would be "all hands on deck" with a short leash on his starter, watched his bullpen give up run after run in the fifth. The Rays' defensive lapses, rather than any single error, told the story of a team that had been inches away in the first two games and miles away in the third.

Why It Matters

A 3-0 lead in a best-of-seven series is, in practical terms, a stranglehold. Milwaukee needs one more win in a maximum of four remaining games, while Tampa Bay must win four in a row against a team that has lost only once in eleven postseason games. The Brewers can clinch on Tuesday night in St. Petersburg, in front of a crowd that came to celebrate a Rays homecoming.

The result also matters for how this Brewers team will be remembered. A sweep would give Milwaukee an 11-1 postseason record, matching the 2005 Chicago White Sox and the 1999 New York Yankees as 11-1 World Series champions in the wild-card era. More importantly, it would give a franchise that has waited since 1969 for a first title — and a city that has supported the Brewers through decades of near-misses — a championship built not on star power alone but on depth, defence and relentless hitting.

For Tampa Bay, the stakes are different but just as high. The Rays have built one of baseball's most respected organisations on a modest payroll, reaching the World Series for a third time. A loss on Tuesday would end that run in their own ballpark, in the first World Series game at Tropicana Field since 2008, after a season spent fighting simply to get their home back. A win, by contrast, would keep the series alive and send it to a Game 5 on Wednesday, still in St. Petersburg.

Beyond the result, Game 3 showcased a version of baseball that does not rely on the long ball. The two teams have combined for just two home runs in three World Series games, which would be the fewest in World Series history if it holds. Milwaukee's seven home runs in its sweep of the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series showed this team can hit for power; in this series, it has chosen a different, equally effective way to win.

What Happens Next

Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27, at 8 p.m. ET at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, broadcast on FOX and streamed on Fubo. Milwaukee will try to complete the sweep and celebrate a first championship on the road, while Tampa Bay will try to extend the series and force a Game 5.

If Tampa Bay wins Game 4, Game 5 will be played on Wednesday, October 28, also at Tropicana Field. If the Rays win both home games, the series returns to Milwaukee for Game 6 on Friday, October 30, and, if necessary, Game 7 on Saturday, October 31, at American Family Field.

Ticket prices for the remaining games in St. Petersburg had already been falling before Game 3, with Game 4 seats starting at $723 and Game 5 at $667 on resale sites, down from $757 before Game 1. Prices for a potential Game 6 or 7 in Milwaukee were far higher, starting above $2,000, a sign of how much demand there is in Wisconsin for a clinching game at home.

For now, though, all eyes are on Tuesday night. One more Milwaukee win, and the Brewers are World Series champions. One Tampa Bay win, and the Rays live to fight another day in a series that, until the fifth inning on Monday, had been far closer than the final score suggested.
