The Dallas Cowboys beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-21 on Monday Night Football on October 26, 2026, turning a back-and-forth NFC East battle at Lincoln Financial Field into a late rout and handing the Eagles their fifth consecutive defeat. Dak Prescott threw three touchdown passes, Javonte Williams ran for a career-high 155 yards, and Dallas scored the final 18 points of the game to move to 3-4, while Philadelphia fell to 2-5 in a season that is rapidly slipping away. The night also brought fresh injury worry for the Eagles, as star running back Saquon Barkley, playing for the first time since injuring his hamstring on October 4, tweaked that hamstring on his very first carry and then suffered a back injury while trying to play through it.

Key Points

• Dallas beat Philadelphia 38-21 on Monday Night Football, scoring the final 18 points after the Eagles briefly led 21-20 in the third quarter.
• Dak Prescott threw for 212 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, finding CeeDee Lamb twice and George Pickens once.
• Javonte Williams ran 25 times for a career-high 155 yards and a touchdown as Dallas piled up 204 rushing yards and 416 total yards.
• Saquon Barkley ran for 62 yards and a touchdown on seven carries before a hamstring tweak and a back injury ended his night early.
• Philadelphia has now lost five straight games for the first time since 2016, one week after learning quarterback Jalen Hurts is out for the season.

What Happened

The game opened with a statement from both sides. Brandon Aubrey gave Dallas the first points with a 55-yard field goal, and Philadelphia answered with its first opening-drive points of the season when Barkley, on his first carry since Week 4, burst 29 yards and then finished the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run. Prescott answered quickly, hitting Lamb for a 9-yard score to put Dallas ahead 10-7 with 5:32 left in the first quarter, and the lead changed hands repeatedly from there. Dameon Pierce scored from 5 yards for Philadelphia in the second quarter, Pickens caught a 21-yard touchdown for Dallas, and Aubrey's 27-yard field goal as the half expired sent the Cowboys into the break ahead 20-14.

Philadelphia produced its best drive of the night to start the second half. Backup quarterback Tanner McKee, making his second consecutive start in place of Hurts, led a 17-play, 84-yard march that consumed 9 minutes and 16 seconds and ended with a 4-yard touchdown pass to rookie Makai Lemon, giving the Eagles a 21-20 lead. It was the sixth lead change of the night, and for a moment the home crowd believed a comeback was on. Instead, it was the last time Philadelphia would score. Prescott floated a 16-yard touchdown pass to Lamb late in the third quarter and then ran in the two-point conversion himself for a 28-21 lead, Aubrey added a 24-yard field goal with 9:10 left in the fourth, and Williams sealed the night with a 2-yard touchdown run with 2:21 remaining.

The final numbers told the story of Dallas control. The Cowboys outgained Philadelphia 416-321, converted 8 of 13 third downs, did not turn the ball over, and were not sacked once. Philadelphia, by contrast, failed to record a sack, a tackle for loss or a quarterback hit, a startling line for a defence led by coordinator Vic Fangio that was expected to be one of the team's strengths. Dallas ran the ball 38 times for 204 yards and threw it 27 times for 212 yards, a balance head coach Brian Schottenheimer had been criticised for abandoning in the second half the previous week.

Background and Context

To understand how damaging this defeat is for Philadelphia, it helps to remember where the Eagles stood only a few weeks ago. They entered the season as one of the NFC's leading contenders, but injuries have torn through the roster. Hurts, the franchise quarterback, was ruled out for the season last week with blood clots, a devastating blow that left McKee, a backup making only his fourth NFL start on Monday night, to run the offence. Wide receivers DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks were also unavailable on Monday, leaving McKee short of his usual weapons before kick-off.

Barkley's absence had been almost as costly. He injured his hamstring during the Eagles' loss to the Los Angeles Rams on October 4 and missed the next two games, including the October 18 defeat to the Carolina Panthers. He had hoped to play in that Panthers game, and said before Monday night that he was eager to test the hamstring under game conditions. The early signs were encouraging: his 29-yard burst on the first play showed the explosiveness that makes him one of the league's most dangerous backs. But he appeared to pull up before going out of bounds on that run, spent time in the blue medical tent, and played only sporadically thereafter, alternating with Pierce and rarely staying on the field for consecutive snaps.

Dallas arrived in Philadelphia with its own problems. The Cowboys had lost two straight games and had yet to win in four primetime outings this season, and their season, like Philadelphia's, was at a crossroads. A road win against a wounded division rival does not fix everything, but it stops the slide and keeps Dallas within reach in the NFC East. Williams' performance was historic in its own right: he became the Cowboys' first 150-yard rusher since Ezekiel Elliott in 2018, and his 25 carries showed a commitment to the ground game that had been missing.

Cowboys Beat Eagles: How Dallas Took Control

The turning point was not a single play but a sequence. After Lemon's touchdown gave Philadelphia its 21-20 lead midway through the third quarter, Dallas answered immediately and never looked back. Prescott's touchdown to Lamb, followed by his own two-point conversion run, restored order and put the Cowboys ahead by seven with 1:30 left in the quarter. From that moment, Philadelphia's offence could not respond, and its defence, already on the field for long stretches, could not get off it.

Prescott finished 15 of 27 for 212 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, a passer rating of 118.1. Lamb caught five passes for 74 yards and two touchdowns, Ryan Flournoy added four catches for 70 yards, and Pickens caught four for 57 yards and a score. Aubrey was perfect on three field goals. On defence, DeMarvion Overshown intercepted McKee in the second half, added two pass breakups and six tackles, and the Cowboys sacked McKee twice. Overshown's night carried extra meaning: he had returned to the field after a hamstring injury that kept him out for six weeks, and he later spoke about playing in honour of two people close to him whom he had recently lost.

McKee finished 23 of 35 for 211 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Lemon led Philadelphia with seven receptions for 67 yards and his first career touchdown, a bright spot on a bleak night. Pierce ran 14 times for 47 yards and a touchdown before leaving in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury, leaving Philadelphia short at running back as well as quarterback by the final whistle. The Eagles finished the game without Hurts, without Barkley and without Pierce, a snapshot of a roster stretched to breaking point.

Reactions and Quotes

After the game, Barkley did not hide his frustration. He told reporters he tweaked the hamstring on the first run and picked up the back injury while trying to play through it, describing it as a compensatory injury. "I don't get it. I just have to find a way to get healthy," he said. "It's annoying. That's what I'm dealing with so far in the season and I just got to find a way to get healthy." He had said before the game that he was happy to have the chance to test the hamstring on Monday night, adding: "God willing, continue to trend in the right direction throughout the week and to be able to go and play Monday night." By the fourth quarter, the team had announced he was questionable to return with a back injury, and he did not return.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni faced direct questions about the decision to play Barkley and to keep him in the game after the first-play injury, particularly against the background of the Hurts blood-clot controversy. Sirianni said Barkley was on a pitch count, with constant communication between the player, doctors and trainers about how he felt. "Obviously, you saw that he was on a pitch count here today, and there was constant communication to see how he was feeling, to see where he was," Sirianni said. "He came out early in the second half. Again, when you go into something like that, you make sure the player's health is first and foremost. Is he ready to go? Do they feel ready to go? Do the doctors and trainers feel like they are ready to go? We felt like that was the case today. But obviously, we wanted to keep a close eye on him. He's tough as heck."

Sirianni added that Barkley probably played a little less than initially planned, and that the staff tried to be smart with a player who would happily take every snap. "He wanted to be out there for his teammates," Sirianni said. "We probably had to slow him up because he'd be out there every play because of the person he is and the teammate that he is and the player that he is and the toughness that he has." McKee was equally full of praise for his running back. "Saquon's a dog. He's a leader. He's a competitor. He will do anything that he can to help this team, to lead this team," McKee said. "There comes a point in the season that a lot of guys are dealing with things. You've just got to fight through it. He's one of those guys that's going to come out and compete."

Why It Matters

This result matters for three reasons. First, it changes the shape of the NFC East. Philadelphia, at 2-5, has now lost five straight for the first time in a decade, and the gap between the Eagles and the division leaders is growing at the worst possible time, with the season approaching its halfway point. Teams that start 2-5 rarely reach the playoffs, and Philadelphia must now do so without its starting quarterback for the rest of the season and with its star running back hurt again. Second, it revives Dallas. At 3-4, the Cowboys are still below .500, but a road win in primetime, built on the run game and without a turnover, is exactly the kind of victory that can steady a dressing room and buy a coaching staff time.

Third, the Barkley injury raises a wider question about how teams handle star players returning from soft-tissue injuries. Hamstring injuries are notorious for recurring when a player returns too soon or compensates for the original injury by changing how he runs, and Barkley's own description of a compensatory back injury fits that pattern precisely. The Eagles will now face scrutiny over the medical process, just as they have over the handling of Hurts, and the answers they give in the coming days will matter for trust inside the building as much as for the injury report. For Barkley personally, the setback is cruel: he returned hoping to spark a turnaround and instead left with a new problem to solve.

What Happens Next

Philadelphia turns its attention to another critical NFC East matchup against Washington in Week 8, a game the Eagles now need almost desperately. The immediate priority is the injury report: updates on Barkley's back and hamstring, on Pierce's undisclosed fourth-quarter injury, and on whether any of the missing receivers can return. If Barkley and Pierce are both unavailable, Philadelphia's running game would fall to its depth options, and McKee would face even more pressure to carry the offence through the air. Sirianni and his staff must also find answers on defence, where the failure to record a single sack, tackle for loss or quarterback hit against Dallas will be the focus of a difficult week of film study.

Dallas, meanwhile, will try to build on the formula that worked in Philadelphia: run the ball, protect Prescott, take no unnecessary risks and let the defence play with a lead. Williams' career night gives Schottenheimer a foundation to build on, and Prescott's clean game, with no interceptions and no sacks, is the template for the weeks ahead. The Cowboys' schedule does not get easier, but a team that has just won in Philadelphia in primetime will travel with more belief than the one that arrived there on a two-game losing streak. For the Eagles, the season is not mathematically over, but the margin for error is now almost gone, and the next few weeks will decide whether 2026 is remembered as a lost year or as the year a wounded team somehow found a way back.
