The Oklahoma City Thunder won the game on Sunday night, 108-101 over the Los Angeles Clippers, and lost something far more valuable in the process. Thunder injuries have now reshaped the early NBA season, after starters Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace both suffered serious injuries in the same victory and were both headed for surgery, general manager Sam Presti confirmed on Monday. Williams fractured his fibula and dislocated his left ankle in the closing moments, while Wallace tore the labrum in his left shoulder after running into a moving screen. Neither player has a return date yet, and both could miss the rest of the season.

It was, in Presti's own words, a tough night. The Thunder had started the season 3-0, they were the preseason favourites to win another championship, and within a few terrible minutes at Paycom Center the mood changed from celebration to shock. Williams was carried off on a stretcher to a standing ovation, giving the crowd two thumbs up as he left. Wallace, meanwhile, had already been hurt in the same game. By Monday, the question was no longer whether Oklahoma City could keep winning, but how a championship roster copes when two of its starters are suddenly gone.

Key Points

• Jalen Williams suffered a fractured fibula and a dislocated left ankle with 1:14 left in the Thunder's 108-101 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
• Cason Wallace suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder in the same game after running into a moving screen.
• Thunder general manager Sam Presti announced on Monday, October 26, that both starters will undergo surgery, with no return timeline until after the operations.
• Both injuries typically need months of rehabilitation, putting both players in doubt for the rest of the 2026-27 NBA season.
• Oklahoma City's NBA title odds lengthened from +238 to +347 after the injuries, dropping the Thunder behind the San Antonio Spurs as championship favourites.

What Happened

The Thunder injuries happened late in a game Oklahoma City was already winning. With 1:14 remaining and the Thunder ahead, Williams drove to the basket, was fouled, and landed awkwardly. His left leg collapsed and his ankle bent at an unnatural angle. Medical staff rushed onto the court as players from both teams reacted in shock. Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander buried his face in his jersey and bent down near his teammate. Williams was placed on a stretcher and wheeled off to a standing ovation from the home crowd, raising two thumbs up as he left the floor.

Wallace's injury came in the same game, though it drew less attention at the time because of the drama around Williams. Presti said Wallace was hurt after running into a moving screen, tearing the labrum in his left shoulder. Wallace had started all three of Oklahoma City's games this season, a promotion that followed the offseason trade of Luguentz Dort to Atlanta. Like Williams, he will now need surgery, and like Williams, his season is in serious doubt.

The timing could hardly have been worse for the Thunder. They had opened the season with three straight wins, with Williams averaging 13.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.0 steal per game, and Wallace averaging 6.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.3 assists. On Monday night, against the Phoenix Suns, Oklahoma City was already down to a patched-up lineup: Gilgeous-Alexander, Jared McCain, Ajay Mitchell, Kenrich Williams and Isaiah Hartenstein started, with Chet Holmgren also out with right patellar tendinitis, plus Thomas Sorber and Nikola Topic already sidelined after surgery.

Background and Context

To understand why these Thunder injuries matter so much, it helps to know who these two players are. Williams, 25, was an All-Star and an All-NBA selection in 2024-25, and a central figure in Oklahoma City's 2025 championship run. He played the entire playoffs during that title run despite a torn ligament in his right, shooting wrist that later required surgery, and he delivered a 40-point performance in the pivotal Game 5 win over the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Finals. He is in the first season of a five-year maximum contract worth 239 million dollars.

Yet his last 18 months have been a miserable run of injury misfortune. Williams was limited to 33 regular-season games and five of Oklahoma City's 15 playoff games in 2025-26 because of wrist surgery recovery and multiple hamstring strains. Now, just three games into a new season, he faces another long rehabilitation, this time for a broken leg bone and a dislocated ankle.

Wallace's story is different but no less important to the Thunder. Named to the NBA All-Defensive second team last season, he is one of the league's most trusted young perimeter defenders, and he had just signed a five-year, 139 million dollar contract extension last week. His promotion to the starting lineup this season was a sign of how much Oklahoma City trusted him. A torn labrum in the shoulder is a serious injury for a guard whose game depends on fighting through screens, contesting shots and making plays on the ball.

Thunder Injuries Reshape the Title Race

The Thunder injuries have already moved the betting markets, and they may yet move the whole Western Conference. Oklahoma City entered the season as the favourite to win the NBA title, but by 7:17 p.m. Eastern time on Monday, October 26, the Thunder's title odds had lengthened to +347 from +238 on October 24, according to BetFinder's consensus odds reported by USA TODAY. In implied probability, that is a fall of 7.2 percentage points, from 29.6 percent to 22.4 percent, the largest peak-to-trough decline of any NBA team in BetFinder data dating back to July 7.

San Antonio, at +290, moved ahead of Oklahoma City as the new championship favourite. The Thunder's odds had already drifted to +309 earlier on Monday, before Presti's press conference confirmed the full extent of the injuries. None of this decides anything on the court, of course. Odds are a snapshot of expectation, not a result. But they capture, in numbers, how much Williams and Wallace mean to this team: not just points and defence, but spacing, versatility and the ability to guard multiple positions in a playoff series.

Oklahoma City still has Gilgeous-Alexander, the reigning heartbeat of the team, and a deep roster built precisely for moments like this. Championship teams are often defined less by how they play at full strength than by how they survive the weeks when they are not. The Thunder's front office has spent years stockpiling young talent and draft capital, and that depth will now be tested in a way nobody wanted.

Reactions and Quotes

Presti did not try to dress up the news on Monday. "Obviously, tough night last night," he said at his press conference. "There's no way to paint that differently. We say within our walls all of the time that there's a difference between being positive and being optimistic. I'm not going to sit up here and say this is exactly where we want to be or this is how we'd like to have it. But at the same time, we're extremely optimistic about the recovery for both of the players. Most importantly, things could've been a lot worse."

On Williams himself, Presti was full of praise. "He has an elite mindset," he said. "It's what makes him a great player. It's what keeps him motivated, and it's why we all love him." Presti added that Williams was in great spirits despite the severity of the injury, a detail that matched the thumbs-up gesture as he left the court on Sunday.

Presti also spoke about the mood inside the locker room, and about the road ahead. "We'll wrap our arms around these guys. We'll get them back. We'll get them healthy," he said. "When these things happen it's really tough. This is the kind of thing that gets thrown at you here. You just plow right through it. You walk through punches and you step over roadblocks. Our guys are ready to do that."

Asked whether he had already thought about trades to replace the injured starters, Presti was blunt. "I really haven't given a lot of thought to that," he said. For now, the focus is on surgery, recovery and the players already in the building.

Why It Matters

These Thunder injuries matter for three reasons. First, they change the championship race. Oklahoma City was not just a good team; it was the team everyone else was measuring itself against after the 2025 title. Losing a 25-year-old All-Star and a starting All-Defensive guard in the same night does not end a season, but it changes the maths of every playoff matchup, especially against the deep, physical teams of the West.

Second, they matter for the players themselves. Williams has already fought back from wrist surgery and hamstring trouble, and now faces months of rehabilitation for a fractured fibula and a dislocated ankle. Wallace, fresh off a major contract extension and a promotion to the starting five, faces shoulder surgery and the slow, careful work of rebuilding strength and confidence in that joint. Both are young, both have time, but neither injury is routine.

Third, they matter because of what they reveal about the modern NBA season. Three games in, a title favourite can lose two starters in one night. Depth, medical care and patience are not background details; they are the difference between a season that survives a crisis and one that unravels. How Oklahoma City handles the next few weeks, in minutes, rotations and expectations, will be watched across the league.

What Happens Next

The immediate next steps are medical. Both Williams and Wallace will undergo surgery, and Presti said their return timelines will not be known until after the operations. That is standard practice: surgeons need to see the full damage before they can give a realistic recovery window. Until then, any talk of weeks or months is speculation, and the Thunder have rightly refused to guess.

On the court, expect a reshuffled rotation. McCain, Mitchell and Kenrich Williams started against Phoenix on Monday, and other young players will get chances they did not expect this early in the season. Gilgeous-Alexander will carry an even heavier load, and Holmgren's return from patellar tendinitis becomes even more important. Presti may eventually explore the trade market, but his comments on Monday suggested no rush, and no panic move.

Longer term, the question is whether either player can return this season at all. Both injuries typically require multi-month rehabilitation, and with the regular season running into April, a return late in the campaign or for the playoffs cannot be ruled out, but it cannot be assumed either. For now, Thunder fans are left with a win that felt like a loss, and a season that has become a test of resilience.
