Dante Moore's season is over. Oregon head coach Dan Lanning announced on Monday night, October 26, that the Ducks' star quarterback is not expected to return to the field in 2026, ending a campaign that began with national championship dreams. Dante Moore out for season is now the stark reality for a programme that opened the year ranked No. 2 in the nation and now finds itself unranked, 4-3, and searching for answers at the most important position in the sport.

Moore has not played since suffering a concussion on a late hit against USC on September 26. He returned to practice in recent weeks and travelled with the team, keeping alive the hope that the senior might yet make a dramatic late-season return. Lanning ended that hope on Monday, telling reporters that the decision was out of his hands and out of Moore's hands, and that the young quarterback's health had to come first.

Key Points

• Oregon coach Dan Lanning announced on Monday, October 26, that Dante Moore is not expected to return for the rest of the 2026 season.
• Moore suffered a concussion on a late hit by USC linebacker Desman Stephens II on September 26 and has missed Oregon's last three games.
• In four games before the injury, Moore threw for 926 yards and nine touchdowns with no interceptions, completing 69.7 percent of his passes.
• Moore passed up a likely top-10 NFL draft selection to return to Oregon for his senior season in pursuit of a national championship.
• Oregon has gone 1-2 without Moore, fallen out of the AP Top 25, and fired offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer after a 21-10 loss to Illinois.

What Happened

Lanning made the announcement at his weekly press conference ahead of Oregon's home game against Northwestern. Asked whether Moore would play again this season, he said: "I am not anticipating him being back this season." He added: "If it was up to Dante, in any shape, way, he would want to be out there playing for the guys, but unfortunately, it's not really up to Dante. It's not really up to me. We can control the setting at practice where he's able to do things for us, where that's not always the case in a game."

Lanning said the programme received real clarity on Moore's situation in the past week, and that the 21-year-old has not yet been medically cleared to return to game action. He stressed that Moore is expected to make a full recovery, saying the quarterback would "100% be able to recover" from the injury. Moore has continued to practise with the Ducks, and Lanning joked that the team is getting "one of the best scout team quarterback looks every single week in practice" from its sidelined star. But practice, Lanning made plain, is a controlled setting. A game is not.

The coach also pushed back firmly against any suggestion that Moore was choosing to sit out a disappointing season. "This isn't a selfish decision on Dante's part, saying, 'I don't want to come back, the season doesn't look the way I want it to look.' That's not at all what this is," Lanning said. He declined to speculate on Moore's future, calling that unfair while his recovery continues.

Background: The Hit That Changed Oregon's Season

Rewind to September 26 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Oregon, then unbeaten, was beating USC 41-27 when Moore scrambled downfield in the first half, attempted to slide, and was hit late by Trojans linebacker Desman Stephens II. Moore's head bounced violently off the turf, and he lay motionless for several moments before emergency responders took him off on a stretcher and out of the stadium in an ambulance.

The early news, mercifully, was better than the pictures had suggested. Moore was diagnosed with a concussion, and subsequent MRI and CT scans came back clean. He returned to Eugene and eventually resumed practising, but never cleared the return-to-play process for a game. Stephens, who celebrated the hit, was later given a one-game suspension by USC.

Without Moore, Oregon's offence has collapsed: from at least 31 points in each of its first four games to just 14 points per game in going 1-2, beating Nebraska but losing to then-No. 21 UCLA and Illinois. Dylan Raiola and third-string quarterback Brock Thomas have taken turns starting, both have been benched at different points, and the slide cost offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer his job on Sunday, a day after the 21-10 loss to Illinois.

Dante Moore Out for Season: What Lanning's Announcement Means for Oregon

Dante Moore out for season is more than a medical update. It is the moment Oregon's 2026 season officially becomes about the future rather than the present. Moore returned to school as a senior instead of declaring for the NFL draft, when he could have been a top-10 pick, because he believed this Oregon team could win a national championship. A year earlier he had thrown for 3,565 yards and 30 touchdowns across 15 games, leading the Ducks to the College Football Playoff semifinals. This season, in just four games, he was even better on a per-game basis: 926 yards, nine touchdowns, no interceptions, and a completion rate just under 70 percent.

That is the player Oregon will now finish the season without. The announcement also reframes the quarterback room: Raiola and Thomas are no longer keeping the seat warm but auditioning for 2027. And for Moore, it starts a different clock, governing his health, his draft stock, and whether his college career ended that September afternoon in Los Angeles.

Reactions and Quotes

Lanning's words were measured but emotional. "We'd love to have Dante out there. He's still going to be a big part of this team," he said, noting Moore had told some teammates before the news became public. The player, not the programme, will decide what comes next.

Why It Matters

This story matters beyond Eugene because it sits at the intersection of player safety, the NFL draft, and win-now pressure on elite programmes. Moore entered 2026 as a projected top-10 draft pick who chose college over millions. His injury, and its cautious month-long handling, shows how seriously programmes now take concussions, and how little control even a head coach has once the protocol takes over.

It also matters for the draft. Before the injury, Moore was firmly in the top-five conversation for the 2027 class. A four-game tape, however brilliant, is thin for NFL evaluators, who must now weigh medical questions alongside obvious talent. Some analysts still see a first-round pick; others expect the missed time to push him down boards unless he returns to Oregon for another season.

What Happens Next

Oregon's immediate future belongs to Raiola and Thomas, with Saturday's Northwestern game the first test of life after the announcement. Lanning must also find a new offensive coordinator, knowing the 2027 starting job is genuinely open. For Moore, the next steps are quieter: recovery, controlled practice, and, in time, a decision nobody at Oregon will rush.

One question will linger all winter: has Dante Moore played his final game as a Duck? Lanning called it unfair to answer that on Monday, and he is right. But if the USC game proves to be his Oregon farewell, it will rank among the cruellest endings in recent college football history.
