Margaret Qualley and Jack Antonoff have filed for divorce after nearly three years of marriage, closing the legal chapter on one of Hollywood and pop music's most watched young couples. The filing, made on Friday, October 30, 2026, in New York, was described by sources close to the pair as a joint and mutual decision, bringing a formal end to a marriage that had already been over in practice since the summer.

According to court records, the case was filed in Kings County Supreme Court in Brooklyn and is listed as an uncontested matrimonial action. Qualley, 32, is listed as the plaintiff and Antonoff, 42, as the defendant, a formality of New York divorce procedure that sources stressed does not reflect a contested split. A settlement agreement has also been filed and was still being processed by the court at the time the news broke.

What Happened

News of the filing broke late on Friday, October 30, when Page Six reported that it had obtained the New York Supreme Court records, and People confirmed through a source close to the former couple that the pair had filed jointly. The Associated Press also reported the filing on Friday evening, noting that the case is listed as an uncontested matrimonial action and that the couple separated in July.

The distinction between the names on the paperwork and the nature of the split matters in New York, where a divorce filing requires one party to be named as plaintiff and the other as defendant even when both sides agree. A source close to the couple told People: "Jack and Margaret are filing for divorce jointly. This is a mutual decision." Page Six, citing its own sources, reported that the couple had also filed a settlement agreement, suggesting that the financial and practical terms of the split had already been worked out before the paperwork was lodged.

Neither Qualley nor Antonoff has made a public statement about the filing itself. Representatives for both were contacted for comment by several outlets and had not immediately responded when the story was first published. Qualley, for her part, has not spoken publicly about the split at all since it was confirmed in July, while Antonoff addressed it only days earlier, in a newspaper profile published on October 25.

Background and Context

Qualley and Antonoff's relationship moved quickly once it began. They started dating in the summer of 2021 after meeting at a party, and Antonoff later described the meeting in vivid terms on "The Howard Stern Show," saying: "I saw her and it was like a f---ing Hallmark movie that doesn't seem believable. When I met her, I started imagining things that I'd never even imagined, like marriage."

News broke in May 2022 that Antonoff had proposed, and he later told Stern that he had popped the question in Paris, after calling Qualley's sister, Rainey Qualley, and working up the nerve. The couple married in August 2023 in Antonoff's native New Jersey, at a wedding attended by Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Zoë Kravitz and Channing Tatum. Just ahead of the ceremony, Qualley, the star of "The Substance" and the Netflix series "Maid," called Antonoff her "person" in a Harper's Bazaar interview, saying: "It's real. It's amazing. It's the best feeling in the world. I'm so excited and so at ease all at once."

The first public sign of trouble came in July 2026. Fans noticed that Qualley was not present when Antonoff attended the wedding of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce on July 3, and speculation followed. Page Six reported at the time that Antonoff had attended solo and had told fellow wedding guests that he and Qualley were in a "tiff," saying he did not want to put up a facade while they were having trouble. On July 8, People confirmed that the pair had separated after nearly three years of marriage, just weeks shy of what would have been their third wedding anniversary in August.

At that point, a representative for Qualley pushed back firmly against speculation about the reasons, saying: "The narratives running in the press about Margaret and Jack are categorically untrue. There are no trust issues. There was no infidelity or anything outside of respect and partnership in this relationship." Page Six's sources echoed that line in July, telling the outlet that the couple did not split for any "dramatic reason" and that social media rumours about infidelity were unfounded. One insider said at the time: "They're figuring this all out together. For what it's worth, they've had a beautiful and loving relationship. Sometimes, these things just don't work."

Margaret Qualley Jack Antonoff Divorce: What Sources Say Now

The reporting around Friday's filing paints a consistent picture of a slow, deliberate uncoupling rather than a sudden break. A source told Page Six: "This divorce filing was inevitable. Like most couples, it took Margaret and Jack some time to iron out a few things and just adjust to this chapter before taking that next step to make things official and file the paperwork." The same source added: "They still have immense respect for one another but knew this was coming."

Other accounts point to the practical pressures of two demanding careers. Us Weekly subsequently reported that Qualley was the one to initiate the breakup, citing busy schedules and distance as factors, and claiming: "They were still trying to work on the marriage a few months ago, but it ultimately wasn't working. At some point, the rose-colored glasses came off for Margaret, and she felt she needed to take a step back."

Page Six also reported that communication had been a challenge for the pair, quoting a source as saying: "Jack could be very particular about how he liked things. He'd often prefer for things to be done the way he thought was best, and Margaret didn't always feel like her perspective was being heard or given the same weight." Those characterisations come from unnamed sources, not from either Qualley or Antonoff directly, and they sit alongside the couple's own camp's insistence that the split was mutual and respectful.

The clearest first-person account so far came from Antonoff himself, in an October 25 profile in The Guardian, published just five days before the filing. Speaking about performing love songs he wrote about Qualley with his band Bleachers, which is currently on tour, he said it had "actually been really beautiful," adding that he had "obviously was really worried" about how it would feel. He went on: "The deal I've made with my audience is that I'm going to tell you honestly how I feel and I'm going to risk at any moment having to stand behind it for f---ing ever. Anyone could relate to the terrible sadness and pain, but there's a great power to it also."

He added: "I mean, for people to come together, to know what I write a song about, to know how that must feel for me now, to know what that song means to you as an audience member, to just hold it all and sort of celebrate." It was, by his own account, a performance that had become a shared experience with his audience rather than something to hide from.

Reactions and Quotes

"Jack and Margaret are filing for divorce jointly. This is a mutual decision," a source close to the couple told People.

"They share a deep affinity and love for one another, and though their romantic partnership is ending, they will absolutely be lifelong friends," the same source added.

"This divorce filing was inevitable," a source told Page Six. "Like most couples, it took Margaret and Jack some time to iron out a few things and just adjust to this chapter before taking that next step to make things official and file the paperwork."

"They still have immense respect for one another but knew this was coming," the Page Six source said.

"The narratives running in the press about Margaret and Jack are categorically untrue. There are no trust issues. There was no infidelity or anything outside of respect and partnership in this relationship," Qualley's representative said in July, when the separation was confirmed.

"The deal I've made with my audience is that I'm going to tell you honestly how I feel and I'm going to risk at any moment having to stand behind it for f---ing ever," Antonoff told The Guardian on October 25, speaking about singing songs he wrote about Qualley.

Why It Matters

Celebrity divorces are often treated as gossip, but the Qualley-Antonoff split has drawn attention for a different reason: both are at the height of their creative powers, and their work is unusually intertwined with their personal lives. Antonoff is one of pop music's most influential producers, the Bleachers frontman whose collaborations with Taylor Swift and Lorde have shaped the sound of the last decade, and whose songs are, by his own admission, written honestly about how he feels. Qualley, an Emmy-nominated actor, has built a career on intense, physically committed performances, from "Maid" to "The Substance," and was seen as recently as October 7 at a New York special screening of "Love Of Your Life."

The filing also lands at a moment when the public conversation about the couple has already moved past the initial shock of the separation. By the time the paperwork was filed, the separation had been public for nearly four months, the rumours had been publicly denied, and Antonoff had already begun to process the break in front of live audiences. The uncontested nature of the filing, and the settlement agreement lodged alongside it, suggests a split managed privately and deliberately, rather than one fought out in public.

For fans, the story is also a reminder of how little the paperwork itself reveals. A court filing records a legal fact — a marriage ending — but the reasons, as described by sources on both sides, remain ordinary and human: busy schedules, distance, communication, and a relationship that, in the words of one insider, simply stopped working despite a genuine and loving history.

What Happens Next

The immediate next step is procedural. The settlement agreement filed with the divorce papers must still be processed by the court, and once that is complete the divorce can be finalised. Because the filing is uncontested, that process is typically straightforward, though no timetable has been publicly confirmed.

Both careers continue at full pace. Antonoff remains on tour with Bleachers, where the songs he wrote about Qualley are now part of the set in a new and complicated light. Qualley continues to promote her screen work, having appeared at the October 7 New York screening of "Love Of Your Life" without commenting on the split. Whether either speaks directly about the divorce filing itself remains to be seen; so far, both have let sources and, in Antonoff's case, his music do the talking.

What is clear is that the legal end of the marriage is not the end of the story for either artist's audience. Antonoff's songs about Qualley will keep being sung, and Qualley's performances will keep being watched, by people who now know the context in which both were made. That, Antonoff suggested in his Guardian interview, may be the point: a sadness that is held and celebrated together, rather than hidden away.
