The Carolina Panthers fired defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero on Friday, October 30, 2026, less than 12 hours after a 27-19 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football, ending a tenure that began in 2023 and never delivered the defensive turnaround the franchise promised. Defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley was also dismissed, and defensive line coach Todd Wash was named interim defensive coordinator with play-calling duties, in the first major coaching shakeup of head coach Dave Canales's tenure and the first NFL coordinator firing of the 2026 season.

The timing was no accident. Carolina has 10 days before its next game, a Week 9 meeting with the Denver Broncos, giving Wash a mini-bye week to install his own stamp on a unit that has become the team's weakest link. At 3-4, the Panthers remain tied for first place in a winnable NFC South, but the defence that was supposed to carry a division champion has instead leaked points and rushing yards at a near league-worst rate.

What Happened

The Panthers announced the changes on Friday morning, confirming reports that first surfaced from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, who posted: "Sources: Panthers are letting go of defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero." The team confirmed that Wash would take over the defence, that outside linebackers coach and run game specialist AC Carter would also coach the defensive line, and that secondary coach Renaldo Hill would continue overseeing the defensive backs.

The firings followed a brutal five-day stretch in which Carolina conceded 70 points in two defeats. First came a Week 7 blowout in which the Tampa Bay Buccaneers scored 43 points. Then, on a short week, the Packers scored 27 at Lambeau Field, with quarterback Jordan Love throwing for 288 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-19 win that had already been covered in detail on this site. The loss dropped Carolina to 3-4, its second straight defeat after a 3-2 start had briefly put the Panthers in control of the NFC South race.

Canales was expected to address the moves later on Friday, according to the Associated Press. The firing is the first major coaching decision of his tenure since he took over as head coach in 2024, and it comes despite general manager Dan Morgan announcing in January 2026 that Evero had signed a contract extension running through the 2027 season.

Background: A Defence That Never Took Hold

Evero, 45, arrived in Carolina in February 2023 as part of Frank Reich's staff, having previously served as the Denver Broncos' defensive coordinator in 2022. He survived the culling of the Reich era and was retained when Canales took charge, a sign of how highly regarded he was around the league. But the results never followed the reputation.

Since Evero took over, Carolina's run defence has never finished higher than 20th in the NFL. In 2026 it has sunk to new lows: 30th in rushing yards allowed and 32nd, dead last, in yards allowed per attempt. The Panthers have allowed at least 200 rushing yards 12 times during his tenure, and they have now allowed more than 250 rushing yards in a game twice this season alone, including in Week 7.

The context made the failure harder to accept. Carolina entered 2026 coming off an NFC South division title in 2025, a season in which an 8-9 team sneaked into the postseason and nearly knocked off the Los Angeles Rams in the wild-card round. The idea was to build on that foundation. Instead, the defence regressed, even after an expensive offseason designed to fix it. The additions of linebackers Bobby Okereke and Devin Lloyd and edge rusher Jaelan Phillips were supposed to transform the unit into a top-10 group. Phillips has been hurt, the cornerback depth chart has been stretched to its fifth and sixth players, and the reinforcements have not produced the expected leap.

Injuries are a genuine part of the story, and they will also shape how Wash is judged. But the pattern of unprepared performances troubled observers all season. In Week 1, after an entire offseason to prepare, the defence was demolished by the Chicago Bears' rushing attack. The only genuinely good performances of 2026, critics noted, came against backup-calibre quarterbacks rather than the league's elite.

Panthers Fire Ejiro Evero: The Numbers Behind the Decision

The statistics explain why Carolina acted now rather than waiting for the season to slip away. Entering Week 8, the Panthers ranked 22nd in total defence and last in the league against the run. Over their first seven games they allowed the fifth-most points per game and the 10th-most yards per game. The headline figures after the Green Bay defeat were stark: 27.6 points allowed per game, the sixth most in the NFL, and 140.7 rushing yards allowed per game, the third most.

Thursday night supplied the final exhibits. With fifth- and sixth-string cornerbacks on the field on third-and-13, Evero dialled up an all-out blitz; the Packers scored a touchdown on the play, when dropping into coverage would at worst have conceded a field goal. Later, on third-and-two with the game to be iced, Carolina's cornerbacks lined up almost 10 yards off the line in zone coverage while Love was carving up practice-squad defenders through the air, and Green Bay converted. In an eight-point loss, those two swings loomed large.

None of this means the problems are solved by a single change. A mid-season coordinator switch rarely transforms a unit overnight, particularly one as banged up in the secondary as Carolina's. But with 10 days before the Broncos game and a division still there for the taking, the Panthers clearly decided that standing still was the bigger risk.

Reactions and the Man Taking Over

Wash, 58, is no stopgap stranger to the job. He began coaching at the college level in 1996 as defensive coordinator for NCAA Division II Fort Lewis, reached the NFL in 2007 as a defensive quality control coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and later worked with the Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions before joining Carolina's staff in 2023. He was Jacksonville's defensive coordinator from 2016 to 2020, a tenure that included the second-ranked defence in the league in 2017, when the Jaguars advanced to the AFC Championship Game.

His task is immediate and unforgiving: steady a run defence ranked last in yards per attempt, protect a depleted secondary, and get more from a front that was expensively assembled but has underperformed. Carter's expanded role coaching the defensive line alongside his outside linebacker and run-game duties is a deliberate attempt to fix the run fits first.

Around the league, the move was read as an admission that the Panthers' championship window in a weak division cannot wait for a rebuild. Carolina's offence, led by Love's opposite number Bryce Young, has had its own struggles, but the defence was the unit that forced the change. The Panthers' next opponent, Denver, will test Wash's first game plan with a full week of preparation behind it.

Why It Matters

Coordinator firings mid-season are rare precisely because they signal that a franchise believes its season is still salvageable. Carolina fits that description: 3-4, tied for first in the NFC South, with a schedule that still offers a route to the playoffs. The Panthers won the division in 2025 with a losing record, proof that this division rewards the team that gets hot late rather than the team that starts fast.

The move also matters for Canales. His first major coaching decision defines his tenure as surely as any game plan. By acting quickly, with a 10-day break to smooth the transition, he has given Wash the best possible runway and given himself a clear line of accountability: the defence was his coordinator's responsibility, and now it is his interim coordinator's to fix.

For Evero, the firing is a setback for a coach once tipped for head-coaching interviews. His reputation as a teacher and schemer remains intact around the league, and he will likely draw interest as a coordinator again in the next hiring cycle. But his Carolina tenure will be remembered for a run defence that never improved and a unit that, too often, looked unprepared for the opponent in front of it.

What Happens Next

Wash takes charge of the defence immediately, with Carter handling the defensive line and Hill continuing with the secondary. The Panthers have 10 days to prepare for the Denver Broncos in Week 9, the first game of the Wash era and the first chance to judge whether the change produces a different product on the field.

Canales is expected to speak publicly about the decision, and his comments will be watched for clues about how much latitude Wash will have to reshape the scheme. If the run defence improves and the Panthers hold their share of first place, the interim tag may become a longer conversation. If the same leaks persist, the search for a permanent coordinator will begin in earnest in January, with the division title still the standard by which this season is judged.
