Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has fired the Pentagon's top military planner, Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, over alleged classified leaks to journalists about the wars in Iran and Ukraine, in the most senior leak case of his Pentagon crackdown so far. The Hegseth fires General Sylvia case was referred to the Justice Department for possible criminal prosecution, the Pentagon said, after an Air Force Office of Special Investigations inquiry that officials say included failed polygraph tests and an admission on video. Sylvia, who led the Joint Staff's Directorate for Strategy, Plans and Policy, known as the J5, has not publicly responded to the allegations, and no charge has been announced.

Key Points

• Hegseth fired Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, the Joint Staff's J5 director, on 28 October 2026, after an Air Force OSI investigation into alleged classified disclosures.
• The Pentagon says the case has been referred to the Justice Department for possible further legal action; the department says it has ongoing leak investigations.
• An internal report quoted by Axios says Sylvia admitted disclosures to two journalists over about a year, beginning in June 2025, including a diner meeting in Arlington, Virginia.
• Officials differ on the polygraph count, with one Pentagon official citing three failed tests and Axios reporting four, a gap that shows how much of the evidence remains undisclosed.
• The firing comes as President Donald Trump weighs renewed strikes on Iran, and leaves the Joint Staff without a named replacement for its top strategist.

What Happened

The dismissal was first reported on 28 October and confirmed the next day by chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, who did not name Sylvia in his initial post on X but pointed to an extensive Air Force OSI investigation. Parnell wrote that the Department of War has zero tolerance for the intentional, unauthorized disclosure of classified information, adding: "Anyone who compromises sensitive national security information puts the lives of our Warriors at risk and undermines every military operation that keeps our country safe." A Pentagon official later told Military.com that Sylvia's termination was for "severe misconduct" and that urgent action was needed. "The extent of his leaking became so critical that Secretary Hegseth took immediate action and fired Sylvia in order to protect national security," the official said. "Urgent action was needed and could not wait another second."

USA TODAY reported that Hegseth fired Sylvia on 28 October in a decision initially announced without explanation, and that the military has since made a criminal referral to the Justice Department. A Justice Department spokesperson said the department "has ongoing investigations related to possible leaks of classified information" and works closely with government partners, including the Department of War. The Air Force OSI confirmed to CNN that it investigated allegations of unauthorized disclosure by Sylvia. By Wednesday evening, Sylvia's biography had been removed from the Joint Chiefs' website, CNN reported.

The sequence around the Joint Chiefs' own statement added to the confusion. A spokesman for Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine confirmed the ouster, USA TODAY reported, after Caine's office first released a statement thanking Sylvia for 32 years of distinguished service and wishing him and his family well in their next chapters. That statement was later retracted. A separate US official told Axios that Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle and his office had lobbied the Joint Staff to issue a supportive statement, in an apparent effort to minimise damage from any future claim that Sylvia leaked classified information. The Joint Staff withdrew the statement after someone in the Defence Department informed it of the reasons behind the dismissal, the official said.

Background and Context

Sylvia, a career Army officer, previously commanded the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, until May 2025, and had served as vice director of the J5 before taking over the directorate. The J5 advises the Joint Chiefs chairman on strategy, plans and policy, and its director sits at the centre of long-range military planning, even though the Pentagon stressed that Sylvia was not the central planner for the Iran war. That role, a Pentagon spokesperson told Military.com, belongs to US Central Command and its commander, Adm. Brad Cooper, who has briefed Trump directly on Iran attack options.

The alleged disclosures began as early as June 2025, according to the internal investigation report quoted by Axios and summarised by Times Now, before the Pentagon barred several mainstream media outlets from its premises. They continued afterwards, the report says, through the encrypted messaging app Signal and an in-person meeting at a Silver Diner in Arlington after a reporter's Pentagon access had been revoked. At that meeting, the report says, Sylvia used notes taken while reviewing a classified secret report to verbally share information about US assistance to Ukraine with a journalist who was writing a book and had met him twice. The meetings were not coordinated with the Pentagon's Public Affairs Office, and the information was not cleared for sharing, the report says.

Officials also suspect Sylvia deliberately deleted his Signal exchanges with one journalist, while he said the deletion was accidental. According to the report, he said he received a Signal message from the journalist in June or July that he believed concerned Iran, could not recall its precise contents, had not responded, and deleted it, believing he had accidentally deleted the entire thread, including messages and calls on his personal phone. The report also says Sylvia admitted being one of 20 officials cited in another report criticising Pentagon leadership. He was described as cooperative in answering questions about media interactions and as having provided his personal phone for forensic examination, a detail that complicates any simple portrait of the case.

Hegseth Fires General Sylvia: What the Investigation Alleges

At the heart of the case is a distinction the Pentagon has not yet filled in: what, exactly, was disclosed, to whom, and how it harmed national security. The Pentagon has said the investigation covers the Iran war, Russia's war in Ukraine and other subjects, but it has not publicly identified the specific information disclosed or explained how it compromised operations. That gap matters because the legal stakes turn on specifics. Federal law, including 18 U.S.C. section 793(d), covers wilful transmission of national defence information by someone lawfully possessing it to someone not entitled to receive it, with penalties of up to 10 years in prison, but whether particular disclosures meet those elements depends on evidence about the information, the recipient and the conduct.

The polygraph dispute is a second unresolved detail. A Pentagon official told Military.com that Sylvia failed three polygraphs questioning him about leaking classified information. Axios, citing the internal report and a US official, reported four failed polygraphs and an admission on video. The difference may reflect different counts of tests or different sources, but neither account has been published in full, and Sylvia has not had a public opportunity to answer the report's claims beyond his reported cooperation with investigators. Until the Justice Department decides whether to charge anyone, the case remains an allegation backed by an internal investigation, not a court finding.

What is not in dispute is the scale of Hegseth's wider purge. USA TODAY reported that Hegseth has fired or forced into retirement roughly two dozen high-ranking officers, and has pledged to cut the number of positions reserved for generals and admirals. Three senior defence officials were placed on administrative leave in 2025 and later fired over leak accusations: Dan Caldwell, a former senior adviser to Hegseth; Darin Selnick, his deputy chief of staff; and Colin Carroll, former chief of staff to Deputy Defence Secretary Stephen Feinberg. None of the three was referred for criminal prosecution, USA TODAY noted, and Caldwell later rejoined the administration at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, a rehiring that critics said undercut the original allegations. Sylvia's predecessor as J5 director, Lt. Gen. Joe McGee, also left the position in October 2025 under pressure from Hegseth, according to CNN sources.

Reactions and Quotes

President Trump addressed the firing on the tarmac on 29 October, telling reporters Sylvia is "gonna have big problems" and adding: "We're very much looking for leakers." In the same remarks, Trump misidentified the general as a woman, saying: "She's going to have big problems, long-term problems." The comment drew attention because it suggested the president had not been briefed in detail on the identity of the officer at the centre of the case, even as he warned of serious consequences.

Parnell's statement framed the firing as a matter of protecting troops and operations, while the Pentagon official quoted by Military.com framed it as an emergency: the leaking had become so critical that it could not wait. Supporters of that view inside the department argue that a senior planner who meets reporters outside the building, after escort rules tightened, and shares material from classified reports cannot remain in a planning post while an investigation runs. Critics, including Republican lawmakers who questioned earlier dismissals such as that of Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, have demanded clearer explanations for senior personnel decisions during an ongoing war in the Middle East, Military.com reported. Neither side has yet seen the underlying report.

The case also revives scrutiny of Hegseth's own record on sensitive information. In March 2025, Hegseth shared details of impending strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen through Signal on his personal phone, including aircraft movements and strike times about two to four hours before execution, in a chat that inadvertently included Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic. The Pentagon inspector general concluded Hegseth violated department policy by using his personal device and an unapproved messaging application to transmit sensitive, nonpublic operational information, warning that compromise could have endangered personnel and mission objectives. Hegseth maintained he provided an unclassified summary and had authority to determine classification, and later called the findings "total exoneration", although the inspector general's evaluation also identified security and recordkeeping failures. The contrast, critics say, is the point: a secretary who survived his own Signal disclosures is now firing a general for alleged Signal disclosures to journalists.

Why It Matters

The timing gives the firing strategic weight. Two US officials told CNN earlier in the week that US forces in the Middle East are prepared to launch new, potentially major, military operations against Iran within 96 hours of receiving an order from Trump, and reporting has suggested renewed action could come after the 3 November midterm elections. Removing the Joint Staff's top strategist days before that window, without a named successor, creates a planning gap at the very moment long-range options are being weighed, even if Central Command retains operational control of any Iran campaign. Allies and adversaries alike will read the vacancy as a signal about how the Pentagon is being run in wartime.

Domestically, the case tests the administration's leak crackdown. In July, the Defence Department announced a joint task force with the Justice Department to identify officials leaking information and directed its general counsel to prioritise prosecutions over unauthorised disclosures to the media. A criminal referral against a three-star general would be the most aggressive step yet in that campaign, and a decision not to charge would raise questions about whether the firing was driven by the evidence or by the politics of appearing tough on leaks. Either outcome will shape how senior officers talk to reporters, and how much the public learns about wars the administration is fighting.

What Happens Next

The Justice Department will decide whether the referral becomes a criminal case, and if so, what offence to charge and what evidence to put before a grand jury. That process could take weeks or months, and the Pentagon has said it will make no further comment to protect the integrity of the investigation. The Joint Staff must also name a successor to lead the J5, a choice that will show whether Hegseth wants a planner in his own image or a traditional strategist. Congress, which has already pressed for explanations over earlier dismissals, may seek the internal report or a classified briefing. Sylvia, meanwhile, faces the prospect of a prosecution that could end a 32-year career in a courtroom, with his reported cooperation and his Bronze Star and Purple Heart record likely to feature in any defence.
