President Donald Trump has put his cancelled Kansas and Iowa rallies back on the schedule, reversing course barely a day after scrapping the final-weekend, in-person stops and replacing them with telephone rallies. A White House official confirmed on Friday, October 30, that Trump will hold back-to-back rallies in Kansas and Iowa on Sunday, November 1, just two days before the November 3 midterm elections that will decide control of Congress.

The about-face caps a dizzying 48 hours on the campaign trail. On Thursday, the Republican National Committee announced that the two rallies were off, saying Trump would instead reach voters by phone. By Friday, the rallies were on again, rearranged around a packed programme of tele-rallies that now fills Saturday. For two Senate races Republicans once counted as safe, the whiplash has become a story in itself.

Key Points

• Trump will hold back-to-back rallies in Kansas and Iowa on Sunday, November 1, a White House official confirmed on Friday, October 30.
• The rallies were cancelled on Thursday, October 29, and replaced with tele-rallies across nearly 20 states in the final days before the midterms.
• The original plan had Trump in Salina, Kansas, on Saturday, October 31, and in Dubuque, Iowa, on Sunday, November 1.
• Kansas Senator Roger Marshall faces Democrat Adam Hamilton in an unexpectedly competitive race, while Iowa Republican Ashley Hinson is running for the Senate.
• Trump is still holding 19 tele-rallies on Saturday and campaigns in Daytona Beach, Florida, on Friday night before the Sunday swing.

What Happened

"Rallies are BACK ON! President Trump loves his supporters, and in addition to nearly 20 tele-rallies, he will hold back-to-back rallies in Kansas and Iowa on Sunday," the White House official said on Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity. The official said the rallies had been rearranged to accommodate the tele-rallies recently added to Trump's schedule, rather than replaced by them.

The announcement, first reported by Reuters and the Associated Press on Friday, restores the two in-person events that had been struck from the weekend diary only the day before. Trump is still scheduled to hold 19 tele-rallies on Saturday, meaning the weekend now combines a day of phone campaigning with a Sunday double-header in person.

On Friday itself, Trump campaigns in Florida, where he hopes to galvanise supporters in a state he won handily in 2024 but where early voting has tilted toward Democrats. His Friday night rally takes place at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, at 7 p.m. ET, after a tele-rally held aboard Air Force One. It follows campaign events earlier in the week in Mississippi and South Carolina, states Republicans usually expect to win comfortably.

What remains unclear, even after Friday's announcement, is the precise shape of Sunday's schedule. The Associated Press reported that it was not clear whether the Dubuque venue is still the plan, and that no new Kansas location or timing had been announced. The Salina event originally set for Saturday remains off the schedule, with both restored rallies now set for Sunday.

Background: From Cancellation to Reversal

The original weekend plan had Trump appearing in Salina, Kansas, on Saturday, October 31, at Salina Regional Airport, in support of Republican Senator Roger Marshall, and at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa, on Sunday, in support of Republican Senate candidate Ashley Hinson, who currently serves in the House.

On Thursday, that plan was torn up. The Republican National Committee said that, with Republicans in a strong position in Kansas and Iowa, the previously planned in-person rallies in those states would no longer take place as scheduled. Instead, Trump would take part in a large number of tele-rallies, which the party said could reach more voters in the limited time left before polls close. The Salina Airport Authority said at the time that all Salina events were cancelled.

Trump himself addressed the Kansas cancellation on Thursday, telling reporters he did not feel a visit was necessary. "I don't feel like I have to go to Kansas," he said, adding of Marshall: "He is doing very well. We are going to have a strong Tuesday night." He added: "I'm not going to Kansas because he's doing very well. I'm going to do a telerally. Tomorrow I'm doing Florida."

The switch formed part of a 72-hour sprint of telephone rallies organised by MAGA Inc., the campaign funding group aligned with Trump, covering at least 19 states, including Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia. In Iowa, the tele-rally was set to support Hinson, Zach Nunn and other Iowa Republicans.

The reversal is striking because of the sheer pace of Trump's October. He has headlined 25 rallies across 19 states since October 1, according to Reuters, a near-daily rhythm that has made him the central campaigning force of the Republican midterm effort. More rallies are expected on Monday, and he is expected to spend Election Day at the White House.

Trump Kansas and Iowa Rallies: Why These Two States Matter

The Kansas and Iowa rallies matter because both states now host Senate contests that are far closer than Republicans expected. In Kansas, Marshall is facing an unexpectedly competitive challenge from Democrat Adam Hamilton. A CNN/SSRS poll released on Thursday, October 29, put Hamilton ahead of Marshall, 49 percent to 45 percent, inside the margin of error but a striking result in a state that historically votes Republican.

In Iowa, Hinson is seeking to move from the House to the Senate, and the race has drawn national attention as Democrats look for pickups that could tip the chamber. With four days to go before the election, both parties are making their final appeals, and control of both the Senate and the House is at stake on November 3.

That context explains why the cancellation raised eyebrows in the first place. Cancelling in-person visits to two competitive Senate states, five days before an election, looked like a signal of either confidence or retreat, depending on who was reading it. Restoring them reads as a decision that neither race can be left to telephone calls alone in the final weekend.

The two states also sit at the heart of the wider midterm map. Early voting is already surging nationally, with more than 43 million ballots cast before Election Day, and the final weekend is the last chance for candidates to convert enthusiasm into turnout. A presidential rally remains the most reliable way to dominate local news coverage for a full day, something a tele-rally cannot quite match.

Reactions and Quotes

The White House's Friday line was deliberately upbeat. "Rallies are BACK ON! President Trump loves his supporters," the official said, framing the restoration as an addition to, rather than a retreat from, the tele-rally programme. The official stressed that the rallies had been rearranged for scheduling purposes to accommodate dozens of additional tele-rallies recently added to the president's schedule.

That contrasts with Thursday's message from the party, which had presented the tele-rallies as the better use of the president's time. Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters had said the change would allow Trump to reach more voters than he could with in-person appearances, and the committee said Republicans were in a strong position in both states.

Trump's own Thursday remarks set the tone for the confusion. Asked about Kansas, he questioned the need to travel at all, saying he did not feel he had to go because Marshall was doing very well. Less than 24 hours later, his schedule said otherwise, with both states back on the itinerary for Sunday.

Local organisers were left to adjust twice. In Salina, the airport authority had already announced the cancellation of all Salina events, and as of Friday's reports, no replacement Kansas venue or time had been confirmed. In Dubuque, the Five Flags Center had been the original Sunday venue, but whether it remains the site of the restored rally was still unclear when the news broke.

Why It Matters

The episode matters beyond scheduling because it reveals how the White House is reading the final days of the campaign. A president who cancels rallies in competitive states invites questions about internal polling; a president who restores them within a day invites questions about internal debate. Either way, the two Senate races are now firmly in the national spotlight for the final weekend.

It also matters for the candidates themselves. For Marshall, a presidential visit in the final 48 hours is a powerful turnout tool in a race where polls show him trailing or tied. For Hinson, sharing a stage with Trump in Iowa's closing days ties her campaign directly to the president's appeal in a state he has carried before. Both campaigns will now build their Sunday around the visit.

More broadly, the saga underlines the unusual shape of this midterm campaign. Trump has campaigned almost every day in October, turning the election into a referendum on his presidency in a way few midterm campaigns experience. The tele-rally sprint was meant to stretch that presence across nearly 20 states at once; the restored rallies show that, even so, there is no substitute for showing up.

What Happens Next

The immediate sequence is now set. Trump rallies in Daytona Beach, Florida, on Friday night, then holds 19 tele-rallies on Saturday, then travels to Kansas and Iowa for back-to-back rallies on Sunday, November 1. Further rallies are expected on Monday, the final full day of campaigning, before voters go to the polls on Tuesday, November 3.

Watch for confirmation of the Sunday venues and times, which had not been announced when Friday's reports emerged. The Kansas location is the biggest open question, after the Salina Saturday event was cancelled outright, and organisers will need to confirm a new site quickly.

Also watch the polls and early-vote numbers over the weekend. If the Kansas and Iowa races tighten further, Sunday's rallies will be read as emergency interventions; if Republicans stabilise, they will be presented as a victory lap. Either way, the final weekend now has its headline events, restored at the last minute.
