A gluten-free flour recall that began quietly in September has just received the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's most serious warning. The FDA has classified GF Blends' recall of its Truly AIP and EAT G.A.N.G.S.T.E.R. baking mixes as Class I, meaning there is a reasonable probability the products will cause serious adverse health consequences or death for people who should never have eaten gluten in the first place. The gluten-free flour recall now covers 4,664 bags sold nationwide, and health officials are urging anyone with celiac disease or a wheat allergy to check their pantries immediately.

The escalation, recorded in the FDA's enforcement reports on October 28, 2026, turns a supplier failure into a national food-safety warning. The mixes were marketed to some of the most label-dependent shoppers in America — people who cannot eat gluten at all — yet independent testing found they contained wheat gluten at levels significantly above the FDA's 20 parts per million threshold for gluten-free labelling. For those shoppers, the label was not a preference. It was the whole point.

Key Points

• The FDA classified GF Blends' gluten-free flour recall as Class I on October 28, 2026, its highest risk level.
• The recall covers 4,664 bags across three products: Truly AIP All Purpose Flour, Truly AIP Bread Mix and EAT G.A.N.G.S.T.E.R. Flat Bread Pizza Mix.
• The cause was plantain flour supplied by PMF Global, labelled and certified gluten-free, which tested far above the FDA's 20 ppm gluten-free limit.
• The mixes were sold nationwide through eatgangster.com, trulyaip.com and Amazon, and through retail customers, up to September 12, 2026.
• No adverse health effects had been reported as of September 17, 2026, but consumers are told to throw the mixes away or return them for a full refund.

What Happened

GF Blends first announced the recall on September 18, 2026, pulling its Truly AIP All Purpose Flour and Bread Mix and its EAT G.A.N.G.S.T.E.R. Flat Bread Pizza Mix because of potential undeclared wheat gluten. The company said the products were manufactured using plantain flour supplied by PMF Global that was labelled and certified gluten-free. Independent third-party testing, however, confirmed that the plantain flour ingredient contained gluten, and that all of the recalled products tested at levels significantly exceeding the FDA's 20 parts per million threshold.

The FDA published the company's announcement the same day, September 18, and the recall has been conducted with the agency's knowledge ever since. What changed on October 28 was the classification. In the FDA's enforcement system, Class I is reserved for situations where there is a reasonable probability that using the product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death. Class II, by contrast, covers products that may cause temporary or medically reversible harm, and Class III covers products unlikely to cause harm at all. By placing this recall in Class I, the FDA signalled that for people with celiac disease or wheat allergy, this was not a minor labelling slip.

The numbers behind the recall are precise. The Truly AIP All Purpose Baking Mix Flour, sold in 15.3-ounce bags, accounts for 1,495 bags across two lots: lot 260225, with a best-by date of February 25, 2028, and lot 260610, best-by June 10, 2028. The Truly AIP Rustic Bread Mix, in 14-ounce bags, accounts for 986 bags: lot 260417, best-by April 17, 2028, and lot 260617, best-by December 17, 2027. The EAT G.A.N.G.S.T.E.R. Pizza Crust and Flatbread Mix accounts for 2,163 bags in the 5.8-ounce size plus 20 bags in the 3.98-pound size: lot 260327, with best-by dates of July 27, 2027 and September 27, 2027, and lot 260803, best-by February 3, 2028. Together, that is 4,664 bags.

GF Blends said it immediately notified customers once the problem was confirmed and flagged all affected lots. Consumers holding a recalled mix are told either to throw it away or to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Anyone with questions can contact the company at 509-375-0909, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pacific time, or by email at recall@gfblends.com.

Background: Why 20 Parts Per Million Matters

To carry a gluten-free label in the United States, a food must contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten. That threshold is not arbitrary. Research has shown it is the level most people with celiac disease can tolerate without triggering an immune response, and it is the standard the FDA uses to decide whether a gluten-free claim is honest.

Plantain flour should never have been a risk at all. Plantains are a fruit, not a grain, which is exactly why plantain flour is popular in gluten-free and autoimmune-protocol baking: it offers a starchy, neutral base without wheat, barley or rye. That is also what makes this recall different from a simple mislabelling error in a factory that handles wheat. The recipe was built to be gluten-free, and the failure arrived inside an ingredient that carried its own gluten-free label and certification. GF Blends has said it will conduct further testing to confirm the presence of wheat gluten specifically.

For people with celiac disease, eating gluten is not a dietary choice gone wrong. According to Stanford Medicine, the immune system attacks and damages part of the small intestine, which can lead to weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhoea. For people with a wheat allergy, exposure can cause eczema, hives and hay fever, or, in severe cases, anaphylactic shock. An estimated one-third of Americans limit their gluten consumption due to health concerns, according to NYU Langone Health, so the pool of shoppers who could have bought these mixes on trust is large.

The timing also matters. The mixes were distributed to customers up to September 12, 2026, through the brands' own websites and Amazon and to retail customers nationwide. That means the recalled bags have had weeks to travel into home pantries, where a bag of flour can sit untouched for months before anyone bakes with it. A recall announced in September and escalated in late October can still reach people who have not yet opened the bag — if they see the lot numbers.

Gluten-Free Flour Recall: What Shoppers Should Check

The check is simple, but it has to be exact. Shoppers should match both the product name and the lot number on the packaging, not just the brand. A Truly AIP flour bag with a different lot number is not part of this recall, and a bag from another brand is not either. The recalled combinations are: Truly AIP All Purpose Flour, 15.3 ounces, lots 260225 and 260610; Truly AIP Bread Mix, 14 ounces, lots 260417 and 260617; and EAT G.A.N.G.S.T.E.R. Flat Bread Pizza Mix, in the 163-gram and 3.98-pound sizes, lots 260327 and 260803.

Anyone who finds a matching bag should not bake with it, taste-test it or pass it on to someone else. The company's instruction is to discard it or return it for a refund. That advice matters most for households where one person eats gluten-free and others do not, because a shared pantry makes it easy for the wrong bag to end up in the wrong recipe. Labelling the shelf, or simply removing the recalled bags now, removes that risk entirely.

People who already ate one of the recalled mixes and feel unwell should seek medical advice and tell their clinician what they ate and when. GF Blends said it had received no reports of adverse health effects as of September 17, 2026, the date the recall was initiated. That is reassuring, but it is not a guarantee: symptoms of celiac exposure can be delayed, and not every reaction is reported to the manufacturer.

Reactions and Quotes

GF Blends said it "immediately" notified customers of the recall once it was confirmed, along with flagging all affected lots, and it is carrying out the recall with the FDA's knowledge. The company's announcement states plainly that the plantain flour was labelled and certified gluten-free, and that independent third-party testing confirmed it contained gluten, with the recalled products all testing at levels significantly exceeding the FDA's 20 parts per million limit.

The FDA's Class I classification is itself the agency's strongest statement in this case. The agency defines Class I as a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death. It does not issue that classification lightly, and it does not issue it for every undeclared allergen. The decision reflects who this product was sold to: people whose health depends on the gluten-free claim being true.

Food-safety experts quoted in coverage of the recall have stressed the same point. For a shopper without celiac disease or wheat allergy, a bag of flour containing gluten is an ordinary pantry staple. For a shopper with celiac disease, it is a product that can damage the small intestine. The gap between those two experiences is why allergen recalls, and gluten-free claims in particular, are treated as a priority by regulators.

Why It Matters

This recall matters beyond one small company's baking mixes because it exposes a weak link in the gluten-free supply chain: certification. Shoppers, and even manufacturers, rely on a supplier's gluten-free label as a guarantee. When that guarantee fails at the ingredient level, every finished product made with the ingredient inherits the failure, and the finished product's own label becomes wrong through no fault of its recipe. GF Blends says the contamination traces to the supplied ingredient rather than its own mixing process, and it plans further testing to confirm wheat gluten specifically.

It also matters because allergen recalls are among the most common reasons food is pulled from shelves, yet they are easy to miss. Unlike a product that smells off or looks spoiled, a bag of flour with undeclared gluten looks, smells and bakes exactly like the safe version. Only the lot number tells the difference. That is why the FDA publishes lot-level detail, and why this article lists every lot and best-by date: the detail is the warning.

Finally, the recall is a reminder that "gluten-free" is a regulated claim, not a marketing slogan. The 20 parts per million standard exists so that people with celiac disease can shop with confidence. Each time that standard is shown to have failed, confidence takes a hit — not only for the brand involved, but for every gluten-free label on the shelf. Rigorous supplier testing is the only thing standing between a certification and a Class I recall.

What Happens Next

The immediate next step is for consumers to check their pantries against the lot list and to return or discard any matching bag. GF Blends' refund route — return to the place of purchase, or contact the company directly — remains open, and the FDA's enforcement listing will track the recall's progress.

Behind the scenes, two questions remain open. The first is what GF Blends' further testing will show about wheat gluten specifically, and whether the supplier, PMF Global, will face further action or issue its own corrective statement. The second is whether other products made with the same plantain flour are affected. So far, the recall covers only GF Blends' three mixes, and no wider recall has been announced. Shoppers who buy other brands made with plantain flour should watch the FDA's recall pages for updates, and manufacturers using the same ingredient should be checking their own test results now, not after a regulator asks.

Regulators will also be watching whether any illnesses emerge. The absence of adverse reports as of September 17 is the baseline; if cases appear, the recall's public profile will rise sharply, and the Class I classification will already have framed how seriously those cases are treated.
