The Green Bay Packers beat the Panthers 27-19 on Thursday night at Lambeau Field, turning a night of Wisconsin celebration into a fifth win of the season and keeping their push in the NFC North firmly alive. Jordan Love threw three touchdown passes, Christian Watson returned from a hospital trip to finish with 113 receiving yards, and a six-sack Green Bay defence held off a late Carolina rally in the Week 8 opener. The Packers beat the Panthers in front of a crowd still buzzing from the Milwaukee Brewers' first World Series title, clinched only a day earlier in Florida.

Key Points

• Green Bay beat Carolina 27-19 at Lambeau Field on Thursday night, October 29, 2026, to open Week 8.
• Jordan Love completed 30 of 41 passes for 288 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, for a 106.6 passer rating.
• Christian Watson left in the first quarter for hospital evaluation after a hard fall, then returned in the third quarter and finished with eight catches for 113 yards.
• Josh Jacobs scored twice, on a one-yard run and a four-yard catch, despite averaging only 1.9 yards per carry.
• Green Bay sacked Bryce Young six times, with six different defenders recording a sack, and stopped Carolina's final drive with 22 seconds left.

What Happened

Carolina struck first, after Green Bay fumbled the opening kickoff to set up a Panthers field goal. The Packers then scored touchdowns on three of their next four possessions to take command. Love threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Tucker Kraft on third-and-eight to put Green Bay ahead 6-3, although rookie kicker Trey Smack's extra-point attempt bounced off the left upright. Jacobs scored on a one-yard run early in the second quarter to put Green Bay ahead for good at 13-10, and Love connected with Matthew Golden on a 24-yard scoring throw late in the first half to make it 20-10 at the break. The Packers led 6-3 after the first quarter, 20-10 at half-time and 27-10 in the third quarter, before Carolina scored the only points of the fourth quarter until the final stop.

Love's third touchdown pass, a four-yard throw to Jacobs on third-and-one, made it 27-10. Carolina kicker Ryan Fitzgerald then made a 50-yard field goal to cut the lead to 27-13, before Young drove the Panthers 70 yards in 12 plays and hit Jalen Coker with a 26-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-three with 5 minutes 37 seconds remaining. The two-point conversion pass was incomplete, leaving the score at 27-19. Carolina got the ball back at its own 45-yard line with 4 minutes 35 seconds left, but Young's fourth-down pass was incomplete, and the Panthers lost the ball on downs at midfield with 2 minutes 41 seconds remaining. A sack of Young on the first play of their desperation drive, from their own 20-yard line, ended any remaining hope.

Background and Context

The Packers entered the game at 4-3, pencilled in as the NFC's seventh seed in the early playoff picture, having won only one playoff game in the last three seasons and not reached the Super Bowl since Aaron Rodgers led them to victory in Super Bowl 45 after the 2010 season. Thursday's win moved them to 5-3, their fourth victory in five October games. Carolina fell to 3-4 and will return home to host the Denver Broncos, who are 5-2, in Week 9.

The game also continued a remarkable week for Wisconsin sport. The Brewers had wrapped up the franchise's first World Series title with a 4-1 Game 5 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field on October 28, after a 103-win regular season and an 11-2 postseason run. Less than 24 hours later, Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff carried the Commissioner's Trophy onto the field at Lambeau, joined by Christian Yelich and Sal Frelick. Frelick took a Lambeau Leap, the Brewers' famous racing sausages held a contest on the field, and the team watched from a private box wearing cheeseheads that read “2026 WS Champions”. The Brewers were due to celebrate with a championship parade in downtown Milwaukee on Friday, October 30. By virtue of the Brewers' title, the Packers now own the longest championship drought among Wisconsin's major men's professional sports teams, with the Milwaukee Bucks having won the NBA title in 2021.

Packers Beat Panthers 27-19: How the Game Was Won

The clearest difference was at quarterback. Love was never sacked, finished with a 106.6 passer rating and repeatedly found chunk plays to Watson and Golden. Watson caught a 53-yard pass from Love to key a 90-yard scoring drive, and already had 100 yards in the first half before his hospital trip. Golden, listed as questionable before the game because of shoulder and foot injuries, finished with seven catches for 79 yards and a touchdown. Young, by contrast, completed 23 of 41 passes for 209 yards, one touchdown and one interception, for a 68.0 rating, averaging only 5.1 yards per attempt. Green Bay sacked him six times for 33 yards, with Ty'Ron Hopper, Devonte Wyatt, Lukas Van Ness, Barryn Sorrell, Brenton Cox Jr. and rookie Dani Dennis-Sutton each recording one, forcing Carolina to shorten its passing game.

The running game remains Green Bay's biggest worry. The Packers entered last in the NFL in rushing at 59.9 yards per game and managed only 66 yards on the ground. Jacobs carried 21 times for 39 yards, a 1.9-yard average, and caught six passes for 13 yards. Through eight games, Green Bay is on pace to become the first team since the 1946 Detroit Lions to average fewer than 60 rushing yards per game in a season. Jacobs still found the end zone twice, including a one-yard run that was only the Packers' fourth rushing touchdown of the season. Chuba Hubbard ran for 81 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries for Carolina and added seven catches for 38 yards.

Reactions and Talking Points

The night's most talked-about moment was Watson's return. In the first quarter, he caught a 53-yard pass, fell hard on the football and had two Panthers defensive backs land on top of him. He went straight to hospital after a brief stop in the blue medical tent, a trip from which players do not usually return before the end of a game. Watson did return in the third quarter, caught passes on his first snap back and added receptions in the second half, including one that helped seal the victory.

The Brewers' cameo drew almost as much attention. The sight of Woodruff carrying the trophy out of the tunnel, greeted by the Packers' defence, underlined how closely the state's two biggest teams have been linked this week. There was also a lighter subplot around the kicking game: after Smack doinked his first extra point off the left upright, he made his next three, and after each one Packers fans erupted, louder, according to local reports, than their cheers for the Brewers. The reaction reflected a growing concern, as the miss was the eighth kick Smack has not made in eight games, and in the past four weeks he has missed four field goals and two extra points. On defence, Hopper broke up three passes, recorded an interception and a sack and made six tackles, a timely display with Edgerrin Cooper, Green Bay's best coverage linebacker, having torn his Achilles earlier this month at Tampa Bay.

Why It Matters

For Green Bay, the win matters because it keeps a promising season on track without a perfect performance. The Packers overcame three turnovers, a fumbled opening kickoff, a stalled late offence and the league's worst rushing attack, and still beat a Carolina team that had chances to steal the game in the fourth quarter. That resilience, built on Love's passing and a pass rush that finally fired together, is the kind of quality that separates playoff teams in November and December. For Carolina, the loss exposed the same problem that has followed Young all season: when the offensive line cannot protect him, the offence shrinks, with no pass over 20 yards all night until Coker's late touchdown. For Wisconsin, the night mattered beyond the standings, as a state that had waited 57 years for a Brewers title got to celebrate it twice in two days.

What Happens Next

The Packers will now prepare for the rest of Week 9 and the run towards the playoffs, with the return to practice of Micah Parsons, who has been nearing a comeback, one of the key dates to watch. If the pass rush that sacked Young six times can maintain that level with Parsons back, Green Bay's defence could become a genuine strength. The more pressing questions are the running game and the kicking game, as Love cannot be expected to carry the offence alone every week. Carolina returns home to face Denver in Week 9, a game that now carries extra weight at 3-4, with fixing the protection in front of Young the first priority. Milwaukee's celebration continues on Friday, October 30, with the Brewers' Parade of Champions starting at 10 a.m. Central Time in downtown Milwaukee and finishing at Henry Maier Festival Park.
