The Chicago Bears have gone all in. In a stunning move ahead of the NFL trade deadline, the Bears agreed on Thursday, October 29, 2026, to acquire All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons from the Tennessee Titans, sending two first-round draft picks to Tennessee in the boldest trade of the season so far. The Jeffery Simmons trade instantly turns a 5-2 Chicago team with genuine Super Bowl ambitions into an even more dangerous contender, and it leaves the rebuilding Titans holding a treasure chest of draft capital.

Key Points

• The Bears receive Jeffery Simmons and a fifth-round pick in the 2028 NFL Draft.
• The Titans receive first-round picks in 2027 and 2028, plus a fourth-round pick in 2027.
• Simmons, 29, is a four-time Pro Bowler and the first defensive tackle in the common draft era (since 1967) to be traded for multiple first-round picks.
• The deal is pending a physical, and Simmons could debut for Chicago on Monday Night Football on November 2 at Seattle.
• Simmons signed a three-year, $105.8 million extension with Tennessee in June, with $100 million guaranteed.

What Happened

The blockbuster came together with remarkable speed. Late on the night of Wednesday, October 28, Bears general manager Ryan Poles reached out to Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi, who was still at the team facility alongside Titans head coach Robert Saleh. Borgonzi ran the offer by Saleh, then spoke with Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk the following morning, and the deal was finalised on Thursday morning, pending a physical.

By Thursday, Simmons was gone from Nashville. His Titans blue No. 98 jersey rested still on a hanger, but after eight years, the All-Pro defensive tackle was nowhere to be found at his Tennessee locker, according to The Tennessean. The swiftness of the move stunned even Simmons himself. Less than 24 hours earlier, he had told reporters he had no interest in leaving Tennessee as the NFL trade deadline approached.

"Each and every day I wake up, my goal is to be where my feet are at," Simmons said on Wednesday. "I'm never looking ahead, just being in the moment each and every day. I don't worry about the things that I can't control. Those types of things are also a distraction – that's a lot of fans and outside media. I haven't heard anything from my agent, I haven't heard anything from this organization. As far as I know, I am going to be here."

The trade was reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter and confirmed by the Titans, who announced the terms on Thursday afternoon. The NFL trade deadline is November 10, giving Chicago nearly two weeks to integrate its new star before the stretch run.

Background: Who Is Jeffery Simmons?

Simmons has spent his entire NFL career with Tennessee after the Titans selected him in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, 19th overall out of Mississippi State. He leaves Nashville as one of the most decorated defenders in franchise history: a four-time Pro Bowler, a five-time team captain, and a three-time All-Pro selection.

The numbers explain why Chicago paid such a steep price. Across 106 regular-season games, Simmons has 414 tackles, 72 tackles for loss, nine forced fumbles, 46½ sacks and 96 quarterback hits. He had a career-best 11 sacks in 2025, the most at his position league-wide last year, and added 57 quarterback pressures, per Next Gen Stats. He has averaged 49 pressures a season between 2020 and 2025, and already has 28 through seven games in 2026, along with four sacks, six tackles for loss and 38 tackles.

That is why the extension he signed in June made the trade so surprising. The three-year deal, worth up to $105.9 million, made him the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history at a $35.27 million annual average, surpassing Kansas City's Chris Jones ($31.75 million). At the time, Borgonzi left no doubt about Simmons' standing in the organisation.

"Jeffery Simmons is a pillar for our franchise and embodies what it means to be a Titan. He's the premier defensive tackle in the National Football League and you win with players like Jeffery," Borgonzi said in June. "Not only is his leadership on the field what we want our program to represent, but off the field, he sets the standard for our community."

Jeffery Simmons Trade: What It Means for the Bears

For Chicago, the message could hardly be clearer: this team believes its window is open right now. The Bears are 5-2 and in second place in the NFC North, chasing their first Lombardi Trophy since the famed 1985 team won it all. Chicago has not reached a Super Bowl since the 2006 season, but with quarterback Caleb Williams back from his Week 2 hamstring injury and the team on a two-game winning run, head coach Ben Johnson and Poles are pushing their chips to the centre of the table.

Simmons joins an eighth-ranked defence that has just welcomed back pass rusher Montez Sweat from a two-game suspension. Alongside veteran defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, Simmons should form a nightmare tandem inside, fulfilling coordinator Dennis Allen's vision for the unit after Gervon Dexter Sr. was traded to the Atlanta Falcons in late August. Simmons, a high-motor player who has been on the field for nearly 90 percent of Tennessee's snaps this season, gives Allen the interior disruptor his scheme demands.

The numbers back the gamble. Chicago's 37.9 percent pressure rate ranks 12th in the league, and the Bears already rank in the top 10 defensively overall and in points allowed. But Dennis Allen's unit was at its best last year when it was making game-changing plays, with a league-best 33 takeaways and an NFL-high plus-22 turnover differential. This year Chicago sits at minus-1 in that department, and the havoc Simmons creates could quickly vault the Bears back near the top. At minimum, Simmons will be knifing through A and B gaps and terrorising the Jared Goffs, Jordan Loves and Kyler Murrays of the NFC.

Reactions and Quotes

Adams Strunk thanked Simmons for his service to the club and the Nashville community in an emotional statement released by the Titans.

"There are few people like Jeff Simmons. We are forever grateful for all he has given this team and this city," she said. "His formidable presence on the field was surpassed only by what he did off it. He gave Nashville more than football. The Give 'Em A Reason Foundation has changed lives in Middle Tennessee and in Mississippi, and I have no doubt it will continue to wherever he goes. Jeff — thank you. For how you played, how you led, and how you represented our team."

Early trade grades gave Chicago high marks for the boldest move of the NFL season to date, while Tennessee fared less well in USA TODAY's assessment. Locked On Titans host Tyler Rowland called the return a "Godfather" deal that Tennessee could not refuse, arguing that retaining Simmons would not create a realistic short-term playoff path for a 1-6 team.

Why It Matters

This is a rare trade in NFL history. Simmons is the first defensive tackle in the common draft era to be swapped for multiple first-round picks, and the price reflects both his dominance and Chicago's belief that a championship roster is already in place. The Bears are betting that a 29-year-old interior force, paired with Sweat and Jarrett, can turn a good defence into the kind of unit that wins in January, in the mould of Seattle's "Dark Side" defence that underpinned its Super Bowl 60 run.

The money works for Chicago, too. The Bears will pay Simmons $7.9 million this season before his deal balloons to $26.9 million in guaranteed money in 2027, per Spotrac. Because his base salaries are so large from 2028 through 2030, the Titans take on dead cap hits of roughly $14.1 million in 2026 and $20.8 million in 2027. Tennessee ultimately paid $25.3 million to have Simmons play seven games for the franchise this season, a figure that underlines just how expensive the June extension had become for a rebuilding club.

For Tennessee, the deal is a full reset. The Titans are 1-6 in their first season under Saleh and have not won consecutive games since 2022, despite drafting quarterback Cam Ward with the No. 1 pick of the 2025 NFL Draft and spending heavily in free agency. The trade leaves Tennessee holding nine picks in the upcoming draft, including two in the first round and five in the top four rounds, according to Tankathon. It also, as USA TODAY noted, preserves the option to replace Ward if he continues to struggle as the presumed franchise quarterback, even as the team prepares to move into its new stadium next year.

What Happens Next

Simmons must first pass his physical, after which he can join the Bears for practice. If all goes to plan, his Chicago debut could come in prime time: the Bears visit the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football on November 2 at 8:15 p.m. ET, followed by a Sunday Night Football date with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Soldier Field on November 8. Both games will be an immediate test of how quickly Simmons can transform Dennis Allen's front.

The Titans, meanwhile, return to action on Sunday at the Cincinnati Bengals, beginning life without their most beloved player. With the November 10 trade deadline still ahead, Tennessee's haul of draft picks, and its $83.3 million in projected 2027 cap space, gives Borgonzi and Saleh the raw materials for a genuine rebuild. Whether that rebuild is built around Ward, or around a new quarterback chosen with one of those first-round picks, is now the biggest question in Nashville.

Frequently Asked Questions

What did the Bears give up for Jeffery Simmons?

Chicago sent Tennessee a first-round pick in 2027, a fourth-round pick in 2027 and a first-round pick in 2028. The Bears also received a fifth-round pick in 2028 along with Simmons.

When could Simmons make his Bears debut?

The trade is pending a physical. If he passes it in time, Simmons could debut on Monday Night Football on November 2, when the Bears visit the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field.

Why did the Titans trade Simmons months after extending him?

Tennessee is 1-6 and rebuilding under first-year head coach Robert Saleh. The June extension made Simmons the NFL's highest-paid defensive tackle, and the Titans chose to convert him into premium draft capital rather than keep an expensive star on a team with no short-term playoff path.

What is Jeffery Simmons' contract?

Simmons signed a three-year extension in June worth up to $105.9 million, with $100 million guaranteed, running through the 2030 season. Chicago pays $7.9 million this season, with $26.9 million guaranteed in 2027.

Who won the Jeffery Simmons trade?

Early grades favour Chicago, which added an elite interior defender for a Super Bowl push, while Tennessee banked two first-round picks and cap flexibility for a rebuild. The final verdict will depend on how far the Bears go this season and what the Titans do with the picks.
