Three swimming world records fell in a single night at the USA short-course trials in Westmont, Illinois, on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as Kate Douglass, Katharine Berkoff and Van Mathias each booked a place on the American team for the World Short Course Championships in Beijing. In a sport where records are usually chipped away one at a time, Westmont delivered a hat-trick: a tie at the very top of the women's 50 metres freestyle, a first individual world record for Berkoff in the 50 metres backstroke, and a stunning breaststroke breakthrough for a swimmer who works by day in a college swimming office.

• Kate Douglass tied Gretchen Walsh's world record of 22.75 seconds in the women's 50 metres freestyle, beating Walsh herself into second in 22.99.
• Katharine Berkoff broke the women's 50 metres backstroke world record in 25.21 seconds, lowering Regan Smith's 25.23 from 2024 by two-hundredths of a second.
• Van Mathias smashed the men's 100 metres breaststroke world record in 55.14 seconds, taking 0.14 off Ilya Shymanovich's 55.28 from 2021.
• All three winners qualified for the World Short Course Championships in Beijing, held December 1-6 at the Water Cube.
• The trials at the FMC Natatorium in Westmont run October 28-31, with live coverage on Peacock and NBCSN through Saturday.

What Happened

The second night of finals at the 2026 U.S. Short Course World Championship Trials began as the first full day of competition, after an opening distance day featuring just two events, and it did not take long for the records to start falling. Twelve finals were scheduled for the night, and by the end of it three world records had gone. Berkoff struck first in the women's 50 metres backstroke, Mathias followed in the men's 100 metres breaststroke, and Douglass closed the record rush in the women's 50 metres freestyle, a race she contested about 25 minutes after winning the 200 metres breaststroke, her 2024 Olympic gold-medal event.

Short-course meets are swum in 25-metre pools rather than the 50-metre pools used at the Olympics and other major long-course meets in the summer, which means more turns, more underwater work and, often, faster times. That distinction matters in Westmont: every record set on Thursday night was a short-course record, and every winner earned selection for Beijing, where the short-course world titles will be decided in December.

Background and Context

The trials, held October 28-31 at the FMC Natatorium in Westmont, Illinois, select the American team for the World Short Course Championships in Beijing from December 1-6. Swimmers must hit Beijing "A" qualification times to make the team, and Thursday's finals were packed with Olympic medallists and world-title holders chasing those standards. The women's 50 metres freestyle "A" time was 24.33 seconds, the women's 50 metres backstroke "A" time was 26.54, and the men's 100 metres breaststroke "A" time was 57.38, all comfortably beaten by the winners.

Douglass and Walsh arrived in Westmont as training partners at the University of Virginia who had already spent the summer trading the long-course 50 metres freestyle world record. Douglass ultimately took that long-course mark down to 23.19, including a swim at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California, and the pair's rivalry has become one of American swimming's most reliable storylines. Two weeks before Westmont, at a meet in Charlottesville, Douglass set a then-personal best of 22.94 in the short-course 50 freestyle, the fastest time ever swum on American soil at that point, before Walsh broke her own world record later that day in 22.75.

Berkoff, a 25-year-old from Montana, arrived with a different kind of pedigree. She won Olympic bronze in the 100 metres backstroke in 2024, exactly 32 years to the day after her father Dave won Olympic bronze in the same event. She then won her first individual world title in the 50 metres backstroke in 2025 and her first major international title in the 100 metres backstroke at the Pan Pacific Championships in August 2026. The 50 metres backstroke will be contested at the Olympics for the first time in 2028, and Berkoff is already the third-fastest woman in history in the long-course version of the event, behind Italy's Sara Curtis and Australia's Kaylee McKeown.

Mathias arrived with the most unusual story of the three. He placed 41st and 48th in two butterfly events at the Tokyo Olympic Trials, then made what NBC Sports called a "bonkers comeback" last year while working as the Indiana University swimming and diving team's director of operations. By day he is the director of operations for Indiana swimming, where he starred as a collegiate swimmer. In the water, he is now the American record holder in both the 50 and 100 metres breaststroke in long course, and, after Thursday night, the world record holder in the short-course 100 metres breaststroke.

Swimming World Records: How the Three Marks Fell

Berkoff's race set the tone. She stormed to 25.21 in the women's 50 metres backstroke, breaking the 25.23 mark set by her Olympic team-mate Regan Smith two years ago. It was the first world record of the meet and the first individual world record of Berkoff's career. After the race she said she had executed the details of her race, including her start, breakout, turns and finish, much better than she had in the morning heats. She needed every detail to click, not only to break the record but to beat Claire Curzan, who also threatened the old mark in finishing second in 25.26, just three-hundredths outside Smith's former record. Olivia Smoliga was third in 25.70.

Mathias then produced the most emphatic swim of the night. He had already set a new American and U.S. Open record of 55.48 in the morning prelims, taking down Nic Fink's five-year-old American record of 55.56 and Adam Peaty's 2019 U.S. Open record of 55.92, and moving from fourth-fastest performer in history to the top of the list in the final. In the final he was out quickly, splitting 25.76 for the first 50 metres, about five-tenths ahead of Brian Benzing's 26.23, and he came home in 29.38, the only split in the field under 30 seconds. His 55.14 beat Shymanovich's 2021 world record of 55.28 by 0.14 seconds, and he was faster than Shymanovich on both halves of the race, beating the old record's 25.85 opening split by nine-hundredths and its 29.43 closing split by seven-hundredths. Benzing was second in 56.23, more than a second behind, with Josh Bey third in 57.23.

Douglass saved the loudest finish for last. She had become the second-fastest performer in history in the morning with a 22.87 prelims swim, earning the top seed for the final and setting up another clash with Walsh. In the final she matched Walsh's world record of 22.75 exactly, with Walsh second in 22.99, also under 23 seconds. Camille Spink was third in 23.26, Liberty Clark fourth in 23.42 and Torri Huske sixth in 23.69. Douglass and Walsh now share the top of the all-time short-course list at 22.75, ahead of Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands at 22.93 from 2017 and Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden at 23.00 from 2017. As SwimSwam put it, when the two go head to head, Douglass often finds a way to win, and that held true again in Westmont.

Reactions and Quotes

Berkoff's own account of her race was deliberately technical rather than emotional. She said she felt she had executed on the details, her start, breakout, turns and finish, much better in the final than she had in the morning, a telling detail in a 50-metre sprint where a single turn can decide a world record. The result, a first individual world record at 25, also continued a family story that began with her father's Olympic bronze 32 years earlier.

For Douglass, the wider significance was spelled out by the swimming press rather than in a single quote: the swim serves as a warning shot to the rest of the world before Beijing, where she and Walsh, now co-world-record holders, will face off again with not only a world record potentially on the line but a world title. The two have spent the summer trading records and wins, and Westmont added a shared record to that rivalry rather than settling it.

Mathias's record carried its own quiet message. A swimmer who had been 41st and 48th at the Tokyo trials and who now works in a college swimming office did not merely sneak under a five-year-old world record; he took more than three-tenths off his own American record from the same morning and won by more than a second. His summer had already brought American records in the long-course 50 and 100 metres breaststroke, and Thursday night confirmed that his comeback is not a single-meet story but a sustained rise to the top of the world.

Why It Matters

Three world records in one night matter for more than the record books. First, they confirm the depth of the American team heading to Beijing. The United States will arrive at the Water Cube with co-world-record holders in the women's sprint freestyle, a new world-record holder in the women's sprint backstroke and a new world-record holder in the men's breaststroke, all set in domestic trials rather than at a championship meet. Second, they sharpen the Beijing storylines: Douglass versus Walsh in the 50 freestyle, Berkoff defending a brand-new world record in an event that will debut at the Olympics in 2028, and Mathias trying to turn a trials world record into a world title.

Third, the night showed how short-course swimming rewards different skills from the Olympic pool. More turns mean underwater kicking, breakouts and finishes carry extra weight, which is exactly what Berkoff pointed to after her race, and what Mathias demonstrated with a closing 50 metres nobody else in his final could match. For younger swimmers watching on Peacock and NBCSN, Thursday night was a lesson in how races are won in the details as much as in raw speed.

What Happens Next

The trials continue through Saturday, October 31, at the FMC Natatorium, with further finals and further Beijing places at stake. Thursday's other winners already point to how deep the American team could be: Gretchen Walsh won the women's 100 metres individual medley, Regan Smith won the women's 200 metres butterfly, Claire Weinstein won the women's 400 metres freestyle, Caeleb Dressel won the men's 50 metres freestyle, Ilya Kharun won the men's 100 metres butterfly in a new U.S. Open record of 48.45, Gabriel Jett won the men's 200 metres backstroke in 1:47.75 and Luke Hobson won the men's 400 metres freestyle. Dressel also tied for third in the men's 100 metres butterfly final, and Kharun's win qualified him to represent the United States for the first time at a major international meet.

After Westmont, attention turns to Beijing, where the World Short Course Championships run December 1-6 at the Water Cube. Douglass and Walsh will renew their 50 freestyle rivalry on the biggest short-course stage, Berkoff will swim as world-record holder in the 50 backstroke, and Mathias will arrive as the fastest man in history in the short-course 100 breaststroke. The question for all three is the same one Westmont posed so dramatically: can a trials record become a world title?
