New CNN Senate polls have handed Democrats their most encouraging Senate map of the 2026 campaign, with the party's candidates leading in all four battleground states surveyed — Michigan, Texas, Maine and Kansas — just five days before voters decide control of Congress on Tuesday, November 3. The results, released on Thursday, October 29, put a Democratic Senate majority, a prospect that looked remote at the start of the year, firmly within reach, though two of the four races have no clear leader once the margin of error is taken into account.

Key Points

• Democrat Abdul El-Sayed leads Republican Mike Rogers 49% to 42% in Michigan, and Democrat James Talarico leads Republican Ken Paxton 49% to 43% in Texas — both outside the margin of error.
• In Maine, Democrat Troy Jackson leads Senator Susan Collins 49% to 45%, and in Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton leads Senator Roger Marshall 49% to 45% — both inside the margin of error.
• Democrats need a net gain of four seats to take the Senate from the Republicans' 53-47 majority; three of the four seats polled are held by Republicans.
• President Donald Trump's approval is underwater in all four states: disapproval stands at 66% in Michigan, 67% in Maine, 59% in Texas and 57% in Kansas.
• At least one in eight likely voters in every state except Maine say they could still change their mind before Election Day.

What Happened

CNN and the nonpartisan firm SSRS polled likely voters online and by telephone over the past week: October 20-27 in Michigan (768 voters, plus or minus 4.7 points) and Texas (923 voters, plus or minus 4.2 points), and October 20-26 in Kansas (838 voters, plus or minus 4.5 points) and Maine (783 voters, plus or minus 4.5 points). The headline finding is the breadth of the Democratic advantage: Michigan, long seen as the Republicans' best flip opportunity, now shows a seven-point Democratic lead, while Texas, where no Democrat has won statewide in three decades, shows a six-point Democratic lead.

Behind the horse race sits a hostile political climate for the party in power. In all four states a majority disapproves of Trump's job performance, at a moment when polls consistently find Americans worried about the economy and inflation and blaming the president's policies for cost-of-living pressures. Trump has spent the final stretch crisscrossing the country, including visits to deeply Republican states such as Mississippi and South Carolina, to fire up the MAGA base. The CNN numbers suggest that barnstorm may be cutting against him in the states where Senate control will be decided.

Background and Context

The Senate arithmetic explains why these four states matter. A 50-50 tie would leave Republicans in charge, because Vice President JD Vance casts the tie-breaking vote, so Democrats must gain four seats net. All 35 Senate seats on the ballot form part of a wider midterm in which all 435 House seats, dozens of governorships and 145 statewide ballot measures are also being decided. The four states tell different stories: Michigan is the classic battleground with an open seat; Texas is the Republican stronghold Trump carried by nearly 14 points in 2024 and which last elected a Democratic senator in 1988; Maine is a blue-leaning state where a Republican incumbent has survived five terms on a personal brand; Kansas is the deepest red of the four, without a Democratic Senate win since 1932, carried by Trump by 16 points in 2024. Elsewhere, RealClearPolitics averages show Democrats up 11 points in North Carolina and 8 in Georgia, with Democrat Sherrod Brown ahead by nearly three points in Ohio.

CNN Senate Polls: What the Numbers Show in Each State

In Michigan, El-Sayed's lead rests on Democratic consolidation after a contentious August primary — he now holds 95% of Democratic likely voters, up from 90% — and on worsening views of Rogers, whose unfavorable rating has risen from 42% in early September to 50%. Three-quarters of El-Sayed's supporters say their vote is for him, while 57% of Rogers' supporters say theirs is a vote against El-Sayed, a reversal from earlier in the campaign. In Texas, Talarico holds 63% of Latino likely voters and 64% of voters of color generally, including 22% of voters of color who backed Trump in 2024, and his favorability is far more positive than Paxton's. Paxton is viewed unfavorably by 24% of his own party's voters, against just 2% of Democrats viewing Talarico negatively — though the Republican Party itself remains more popular than the Democratic Party in Texas.

In Kansas, Hamilton is overperforming his party despite being lesser known: he draws about 12% of Republican-leaning voters, and a fifth of the electorate has no opinion of him yet still backs him over Marshall. The driving force is Marshall's unpopularity — most likely voters view him negatively, and 59% of Hamilton's backers say they are motivated mainly by opposition to Marshall. Remarkably, Kansas voters say they prefer Republican Senate control yet still prefer Hamilton. In Maine, the race is roughly unchanged since Labor Day: Collins deflects criticism of closeness to an unpopular president better than the other Republican nominees, picking up 21% of Trump disapprovers, but her favorability is net-negative at 54% unfavorable, while Jackson's is narrowly negative (46% to 39%). About three-quarters of each side's voters say their choice is motivated by Collins more than by Jackson, and Jackson's backers are far more motivated to vote (79% extremely motivated, against 62% for Collins).

Reactions and Quotes

The polls landed in a frantic final week of rallies, advertising and ground organisation. In Michigan, Democratic organisers have stressed face-to-face campaigning: "We need everybody and young people are a huge part of the coalition and could really be the difference-maker on November 3rd," Will Lawrence, a Democratic candidate for Michigan's 7th Congressional District, told Al Jazeera. Congressman Maxwell Frost, who travelled from Florida to campaign for El-Sayed, said voters had already seen the negative advertising and needed the personal case: "Everyone's seen the negative bigoted ads and Islamophobic ads, but what hasn't happened is everyone hasn't had person-to-person conversation about why Abdul is the right senator for Michigan."

Republicans can take comfort from the same polls: in Texas and Kansas, at least six in ten of the uncommitted voters are Republicans or Republican-leaning independents, the voters most likely to come home by Election Day, while in Maine more than nine in ten voters say they are locked in. The Trump campaign's answer has been volume — more than two dozen rallies in the homestretch and over 20 tele-rallies planned, including a Daytona, Florida, rally on Friday, October 30. CNN itself is cautious, noting the Democratic Senate prospect "largely seemed out of reach earlier this year, and it remains far from a done deal."

Why It Matters

Senate control decides confirmations, the legislative calendar and which votes are forced onto the record. A Democratic Senate would let the party block judicial and executive nominees; a Republican hold, even by one seat, preserves that power for Trump's agenda. The polls are also a referendum read on the second Trump term: disapproval of 57% to 67% in these states tracks the national picture of voters blaming presidential policies for living costs. And three of the four races turn less on party loyalty than on the Republican nominee's personal standing — Paxton's, Marshall's and Rogers' negatives all outweigh party identification — a reminder that Senate races remain candidate contests even in a nationalised era.

What Happens Next

The final five days are a turnout contest. Early voting is under way with tens of millions of ballots already cast, and both parties will chase the remaining undecided voters through the weekend. The campaigns will watch whether Republican-leaning undecided voters in Texas and Kansas break for the incumbents, and whether the Michigan and Texas leads hold outside the margin of error. If they do, Democrats enter Election Night needing just one more net pickup from states such as North Carolina, Georgia or Ohio. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and the closest races — Maine and Kansas among them — may not be settled on the night itself.
