Paris prosecutors have arrested five more suspects over the daring daylight Louvre heist, but the French crown jewels worth an estimated $102 million are still missing eleven days after thieves cut their way into the world's most-visited museum and vanished on motor scooters. The Louvre heist investigation, which now involves more than 100 detectives, gained fresh momentum on Thursday when Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau announced the new detentions on RTL radio and revealed that DNA evidence links one of the men directly to the crime scene.

The five arrests, carried out in coordinated raids on Wednesday evening across Paris and its northern suburbs, bring the total number of people detained in the case to seven. Two men arrested at the weekend had already been formally charged on Wednesday with theft and criminal conspiracy, and prosecutors say both men have partially admitted their involvement. Yet despite the widening net, Beccuau was blunt about the central question gripping France: overnight searches connected to the new arrests did not recover a single piece of the stolen treasure.

Key Points

• Five more suspects were arrested on Wednesday evening in Paris and the northern suburbs, including Seine-Saint-Denis, over the October 19 Louvre heist.
• Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said one of the five is a main suspect, linked to the theft by DNA evidence: "We had him in our sights."
• The other four are described as associates who may be able to provide information about how the heist unfolded.
• Two men arrested at the weekend were charged on Wednesday with theft and criminal conspiracy and placed in pre-trial detention after partially admitting involvement.
• The eight stolen pieces of French crown jewels, valued at 88 million euros ($102 million), remain missing, and investigators fear they could be dispersed through illegal channels.

What Happened

Beccuau announced the latest arrests on Thursday morning, telling RTL radio that the five men had been detained in separate operations in Paris and the surrounding region, particularly Seine-Saint-Denis, the department just outside the capital. One of them, she said, was "indeed one of the investigators' main targets" and is believed to have been directly involved in the heist itself. "We had him in our sights," Beccuau said, adding that there is "DNA evidence linking him, in our view, to the theft that was carried out."

The other four detainees are not necessarily suspected of taking part in the break-in itself. "As for the other individuals who are in police custody, they are people who may be able to provide us with information about the course of events," Beccuau said, adding that it was "too early" to give additional details about the suspects. Their identities have not been released. Importantly, Beccuau said the new arrests were "not connected to the statements" of the first two suspects, but "to other elements uncovered in the case" — a sign that forensic work, rather than confessions, is driving the investigation forward.

That forensic work is extensive. Beccuau said last week that detectives were examining "150 DNA samples, fingerprints and other traces" recovered from the scene and the getaway route. Public and private security cameras allowed investigators to track the thieves, some of whom wore balaclavas and high-visibility vests, through Paris and surrounding districts. The investigation has also gained momentum from phones and other objects found on the suspects, which have allowed investigators to study encrypted communications they made, Beccuau said. Searches carried out on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, however, came up empty. "Searches last night and overnight did not allow us to find the goods," Beccuau said.

Background and Context

The heist itself, on the morning of October 19, was brazen in its simplicity. Four hooded thieves arrived at the Louvre in a truck fitted with a moving lift, disguised as workmen. They used the lift to reach a first-floor window of the museum's Apollo Gallery, forced it open, and cut into display cases with power tools. In less than eight minutes — prosecutors have described it as a seven-minute raid — they were gone, fleeing along the Seine on motor scooters.

The thieves made off with eight pieces of the French crown jewels, valued at an estimated 88 million euros ($102 million). Among them are an emerald-and-diamond necklace that Napoleon I gave his wife, Empress Marie-Louise, and a diadem that once belonged to Empress Eugenie, dotted with nearly 2,000 diamonds. A diamond-and-emerald necklace and a pearl-and-diamond tiara are also among the missing pieces. The gang dropped one further treasure as they fled: a diamond- and emerald-studded crown that once belonged to Empress Eugenie, the wife of Napoleon III. The museum's director has said the crown was crushed while it was extracted from its display case, but could probably be restored.

The raid exposed security lapses at the world's most-visited museum and sent shockwaves through France, prompting soul-searching over what some viewed as a national humiliation. The museum's director, Laurence des Cars, acknowledged a "terrible failure" in the museum's security. The museum reopened three days after the heist, and workers have since been installing security bars on the window the thieves used to break into the Apollo Gallery. Beccuau has stressed that, so far, nothing points to "any complicity within the museum."

The first breakthrough came at the weekend, when police arrested two men. One, a 34-year-old Algerian national who has lived in France since 2010, was arrested at Charles de Gaulle Airport as he attempted to board a one-way flight to Algeria. His DNA was recovered from one of the scooters used in the getaway. The second, a 39-year-old unlicensed taxi driver from the Paris suburb of Aubervilliers, was detained near his home; his DNA was found on a glass display case and on items abandoned at the scene. Both men were known to police for previous thefts. They were charged on Wednesday evening with theft and criminal conspiracy, placed in pre-trial detention, and have "partially admitted" their involvement, according to prosecutors.

Louvre Heist Investigation Widens

The five new arrests change the shape of the case. With three of the four suspected gang members now believed to be in custody — the two charged on Wednesday plus the newly arrested main suspect — investigators are closing in on the core team. But Beccuau cautioned that the inquiry is far from over. While investigators are certain of the involvement of four perpetrators, she said they have not ruled out the possibility of a wider-scale operation "involving a backer or individuals who may have been intended recipients" of the stolen jewels.

That possibility is what most worries investigators. The stolen gems, if broken up and sold stone by stone, would lose much of their historic identity but could still fetch enormous sums on the black market. Investigators fear the gems will be dispersed through illegal channels, and alerts have been sent to auction houses, the diamond market and professional networks, with the items also reported through international channels to curb any attempt to sell them. The pieces are listed in Interpol's database of stolen works of art, and Beccuau has said she wants "to remain hopeful that [the jewels] will be found and they can be brought back to the Louvre, and more broadly to the nation."

The investigation is being run by a special police unit in charge of armed robberies, serious burglaries and art thefts, with more than 100 investigators mobilised. Beccuau has warned that premature leaks of information could hinder their work, and the prosecutor's office has released few details about the five new suspects beyond the DNA link to the main target. The suspects are being held in separate police stations in the Paris area while detectives question them and test the new forensic leads.

Reactions and Quotes

Beccuau's RTL interview set the tone for the latest phase of the case — cautious optimism about the arrests, frankness about the missing loot. "One of the five men arrested was indeed one of the investigators' main targets. We had him in our sights," she said. "We had him in our sights," she repeated, underscoring that the detention was the result of targeted surveillance rather than chance. On the four associates, she was measured: "They are not necessarily directly linked to the crime, but they may help advance the investigation."

On the jewels themselves, Beccuau did not hide the disappointment of the overnight searches. "Searches last night and overnight did not allow us to find the goods," she said. Her earlier message to the public was one of determination: "I want to remain hopeful that [the jewels] will be found and they can be brought back to the Louvre, and more broadly to the nation."

The museum's leadership has faced its own reckoning. Director Laurence des Cars acknowledged a "terrible failure" in security after the raid, and the museum has moved to harden the Apollo Gallery window used by the thieves. French officials have not commented publicly on the new arrests beyond the prosecutor's statements, and the identities of the five new suspects remain undisclosed while questioning continues.

Why It Matters

The Louvre heist matters far beyond the $102 million price tag, because the stolen pieces are effectively irreplaceable. The crown jewels are not merely valuable stones; they are objects of French national history, tied to Napoleon I, Marie-Louise and Eugenie, and held in trust for the public in the world's most-visited museum. If they are cut up and sold, France loses a piece of its heritage that no insurance payment can restore. That is why prosecutors have moved so aggressively to alert auction houses, diamond dealers and Interpol before the loot can be fenced.

The case also matters as a test of how a modern museum protects its treasures. A four-man team in workmen's disguise, armed with a truck-mounted lift and cutting tools, defeated the security of one of the most famous buildings on earth in broad daylight, in under eight minutes. The "terrible failure" acknowledged by the museum's director has already prompted a national debate in France about security at cultural sites, and museums around the world are watching the investigation for lessons about their own vulnerabilities.

For the investigation itself, the next days are critical. DNA evidence, camera footage and encrypted communications have carried detectives from two arrests to seven in a matter of days. But arrests are not recovery, and every day the jewels remain missing increases the risk that they are moved, hidden or broken apart. The prosecutor's careful distinction — that the new arrests came from fresh evidence, not from the first suspects' statements — suggests investigators still have leads they have not yet played.

What Happens Next

The five newly arrested men remain in police custody in the Paris area while detectives question them and prosecutors decide whether to place them under formal investigation. Under French procedure, suspects can be held for questioning before a decision is made on preliminary charges, as happened with the first two suspects, who were charged with theft and criminal conspiracy and placed in pre-trial detention.

Investigators will continue to work through the forensic haul — the 150 DNA samples, fingerprints and other traces — and to analyse the phones and objects seized from suspects for encrypted communications that could point to a backer or intended buyers. Searches for the jewels will continue, and international alerts remain in force with auction houses, diamond markets and police forces abroad. If the main suspect's DNA link holds up in court, prosecutors will have a strong anchor for the case against the core gang; if the associates talk, they could lead detectives to the loot itself.

The museum, meanwhile, continues to operate with hardened security at the Apollo Gallery, and French authorities face continuing questions about how the raid succeeded and what further upgrades are needed. The world will be watching for the next prosecutor's update — above all, for the news that the eight missing pieces have been found.
