The WNBA Finals Game 7 is finally here, and women's basketball has never had a night quite like this one. On Saturday, October 31, the Atlanta Dream and the Golden State Valkyries meet at Chase Center in San Francisco at 8 p.m. ET, with the championship on the line in a single game. One team will lift its first WNBA trophy. The other will go home with nothing but a long winter to replay the one night that decided everything. This is the first Game 7 in WNBA Finals history, and after six games of wild swings, defensive grinds and a stunning lunchtime rout, it feels entirely fitting that this series needs one more game to settle it.

Atlanta forced the decider on Thursday, beating Golden State 80-69 in Game 6 at a sold-out State Farm Arena. The Dream, facing elimination, played their best basketball of the series when it mattered most. Golden State, meanwhile, will try to shake off that defeat quickly. The Valkyries have home court, a roaring arena behind them and a second chance to win the title on their own floor, after missing their first opportunity in Atlanta. Saturday night on Halloween, under the brightest lights the league can offer, the 2026 WNBA champion will be crowned.

Key Points

• When and where: Saturday, October 31, at 8 p.m. ET at Chase Center in San Francisco, shown on USA Network and streamed on Peacock.
• Why it is historic: This is the first Game 7 in WNBA Finals history, after the Finals expanded to a best-of-seven format before the 2025 season.
• What is at stake: Both teams are chasing a first WNBA title. Golden State, in only its second season, would be the fastest expansion team ever to win a championship.
• How we got here: Atlanta won Game 6 80-69 on Thursday, tying the series 3-3 after Golden State had led 3-2.
• How close is it: Opening odds made Golden State a -112 moneyline favourite and Atlanta -108, with a total of 144.5 points. In other words, a coin flip.

What Happened

Game 6 was supposed to be Golden State's coronation. The Valkyries led the series 3-2, they had won two straight games, and they had held Atlanta to 62 and then 55 points. Instead, the Dream produced a performance that rewrote the story of the series in a single afternoon. The game tipped off at 12:30 p.m. ET, an unusual lunchtime start forced by a scheduling clash at State Farm Arena, where the Atlanta Hawks hosted the Cleveland Cavaliers that same evening. The Dream had complained publicly about the Finals scheduling all series. On Thursday, they made the strange start time irrelevant.

Atlanta raced to a 32-15 lead after the first quarter, the largest first-quarter lead in WNBA Finals history, and never trailed again. Allisha Gray scored 23 points, including five three-pointers, and Rhyne Howard added 21 points with four three-pointers of her own. Angel Reese recorded a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. The Dream made 13 three-pointers, tied for the most by a team facing elimination in Finals history, and led by as many as 25 points. Golden State fought back late, with Gabby Williams scoring 26 points, 22 of them in the second half, and Tiffany Hayes adding 15, but every Valkyries run was answered. When Williams cut the lead to 77-69 with a three-point play, Gray buried a three-pointer that ended the argument.

The numbers told the story of a complete reversal. After being held to 22 points in the first half of their 65-55 loss in Game 5, the Dream matched that total in the first six and a half minutes of Game 6. Atlanta shot its way out of a slump that had lasted two games, while Golden State finished at just 31 percent from the field. The Valkyries' smothering defence, the weapon that had won Games 4 and 5, suddenly could not keep up with a team moving the ball, making the extra pass and shooting with confidence.

Background and Context

This series has been a study in momentum, and neither team has held it for long. Golden State won the opener 68-64 at Chase Center. Atlanta answered with a 79-65 win in Game 2, then blew the Valkyries away 97-71 in Game 3, the most emphatic result of the series. Golden State steadied itself with a 67-62 win in Game 4 and a 64-55 grind in Game 5, a game in which Atlanta's offence completely stalled. Then came Game 6, and the pendulum swung again. Three games have been won by the home team in this series, and three by the road team, which is one reason Saturday feels so genuinely unpredictable.

The context matters beyond this week. Golden State is an expansion team in only its second season, playing in front of its famously loud Chase Center crowd, known as Ballhalla. A title now would make the Valkyries the fastest expansion team ever to win a WNBA championship, a landmark for a franchise that was not supposed to be here this quickly. Atlanta, meanwhile, is in its fourth Finals appearance and still searching for a first title. The Dream have been one of the league's most compelling stories all season, built around Reese, Gray and Howard, and they have already survived elimination once. Surviving it twice, on the road, would be the defining achievement in franchise history.

The Finals format itself is part of the story. For most of the WNBA's history, the championship series was shorter, and a Game 7 was impossible. The move to a best-of-seven format before the 2025 season created the possibility, but it took until this series, in the second year of the new format, for a Finals to actually go the distance. That is why Saturday carries a weight no WNBA game has carried before: every player on the floor knows they are playing in a first.

WNBA Finals Game 7: Why Saturday Is Different

A Game 7 is different from every other game because there is no tomorrow to fix a mistake. Rotations shorten, stars play longer, and one cold stretch can end a season. For Atlanta, the key question is whether Game 6 was a return to form or a one-game explosion. Before Thursday, the Dream had averaged just 58.5 points across Games 4 and 5, and Reese had been held to a combined four field goals across those two games. In Game 6, the offence flowed again, the threes fell, and the Dream played with the swagger Reese talked about afterwards. If that version of Atlanta shows up in San Francisco, Golden State has a serious problem.

For Golden State, the key question is whether its defence can rediscover itself. Centre Kiah Stokes has been a towering presence in this series, blocking 17 shots across the Finals and anchoring a defence that made life miserable for Atlanta's stars in Games 4 and 5. The Valkyries also need a better start. They trailed by 20 points at half-time in Game 6 after making only nine of 34 shots, and they cannot afford to dig that kind of hole again, even at home. Williams, who scored 10 straight points in the fourth quarter of Game 6, gives them a proven late-game scorer, and Hayes gives them veteran calm. But the Valkyries will want the game to look like Games 4 and 5: low scoring, physical and decided in the final minutes.

Turnovers will be another decisive battleground. Atlanta committed 18 turnovers in Game 4, leading to 16 Golden State points, and 17 in Game 5, leading to 21. In a series where four of the six games have been decided by single digits or low totals, giving a good defensive team that many extra chances is fatal. Reese spoke before Game 6 about playing at Atlanta's pace, not getting sped up and making the extra pass. That discipline, more than any single shot, may decide who lifts the trophy.

Reactions and Quotes

Reese set the tone for Atlanta's Game 6 celebration and its Game 7 mindset in a single line. "You can definitely tell we got our swagger back," she said after the win. She also explained the Dream's approach in the simplest possible terms: "Every time we threw the first punch, we won the game." That early punch was the whole story on Thursday, a 13-0 run that turned a 6-5 lead into a cushion Golden State never erased.

Howard, who had been in a shooting slump to start the Finals before her 21-point Game 6, framed Saturday as a test of leadership. "It's do or die. It's win or go home," she said. "I have to be a good leader for this team, I have to set the tone early, and that's what I did today." Reese was equally proud of her backcourt partners, saying of Gray and Howard: "They're great shooters. They put the work in, and I'm just so proud of them. We don't win without them."

Golden State, for its part, has been here before in this series. The Valkyries dropped Games 2 and 3, then responded on their home floor to win the next two. That resilience is why few people are writing them off after one bad afternoon, especially with a home crowd behind them. The oddsmakers agree: a -112 versus -108 moneyline is as close to a pick-'em as a championship game gets.

Why It Matters

Saturday matters because a first championship changes a franchise forever. For Golden State, it would validate one of the boldest expansion builds in recent sports history and give the Bay Area a new champion in just the Valkyries' second season. For Atlanta, it would end years of near misses and reward a team that has become one of the league's biggest draws, led by one of its most recognisable stars. Either way, the winner will be remembered as the team that won the first Game 7 the WNBA Finals has ever produced.

It also matters for the league. The WNBA has spent this season drawing bigger crowds, bigger television audiences and bigger conversations than ever before, and a winner-take-all game on Halloween night, in prime time, is the perfect stage. A classic on Saturday would cap a Finals that has already delivered a 26-point blowout, two defensive grinds and a record-setting first quarter. The league could hardly ask for a better advertisement for its new best-of-seven format than a series that actually needed all seven games.

What Happens Next

Game 7 tips off at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, October 31, at Chase Center in San Francisco. Tickets were listed from $386 at the time of publication, with lower-level seats from $665, a sign of just how much demand there is for a piece of history. The game will be shown on USA Network and streamed on Peacock. Expect both teams to lean on their stars: Gray and Howard for Atlanta's shooting, Reese for its rebounding and energy, Williams and Hayes for Golden State's experience, and Stokes for its rim protection.

After Saturday, one team celebrates and the other begins its off-season. But the result will also shape the off-season conversation. A Golden State title would raise the bar for every future expansion team. An Atlanta title would cement this Dream core as champions and set up a title defence next season. Either way, the 2026 season ends with a single game, a single winner and a place in history that can never be taken away.
