The Atlanta Dream stormed to a 46-21 lead over the Golden State Valkyries late in the second quarter of WNBA Finals Game 6 on Thursday, October 29, 2026, threatening to spoil a championship coronation in a title game played in the middle of a workday. The WNBA Finals Game 6 tip-off at 12:30 p.m. ET at State Farm Arena in Atlanta was one of the most unusual scheduling decisions in recent Finals history, forced by a same-night NBA game in the same building, and the Dream used the strange stage to take control early while the Valkyries chased the first championship in franchise history.

Key Points

• WNBA Finals Game 6 tipped off at 12:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, with Golden State leading the series 3-2.
• Atlanta led 46-21 with 2:10 left in the second quarter, after winning the first quarter 32-15, according to the live score at the time of writing.
• Allisha Gray was perfect early for Atlanta, going 3-for-3 from the field for 8 points in 8 minutes, including two three-pointers, during a 13-0 Dream run.
• The midday start was set so arena staff could turn State Farm Arena around for the Atlanta Hawks' 8 p.m. ET NBA game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
• If Atlanta wins Game 6, a winner-take-all Game 7 will be played on Saturday, October 31, at 8 p.m. ET; a Golden State win gives the Valkyries their first title.

What Happened

The game began, fittingly for this series, with a small piece of Finals theatre. Angel Reese won the opening tip over Kiah Stokes, Veronica Burton opened the scoring for Golden State with a deep two, and then Atlanta took over. Allisha Gray buried a three to put the Dream ahead 3-2, Rhyne Howard blocked Gabby Williams at one end and Naz Hillmon answered with a three at the other, and by the time Gray and Hillmon had knocked down back-to-back threes Atlanta led 6-2 with 8:20 left in the first quarter.

From there the Dream's lead only grew. Gray checked out late in the first quarter to cheers from the State Farm Arena crowd after a perfect 3-for-3 start, and Golden State's drought became the early story of the game: the Valkyries missed seven consecutive field goals while Atlanta scored 13 unanswered points to open a 19-5 lead, before Williams finally ended the run with a contested corner three with 3:49 left in the quarter. Atlanta still closed the quarter ahead 32-15, and the second quarter followed the same pattern, with the Dream stretching the advantage to 46-21 with 2:10 remaining before half-time.

The live score is, by its nature, a snapshot: it captures where Game 6 stood in the second quarter on Thursday afternoon, not where it finished. What it already established, though, was the shape of the contest. Atlanta, facing elimination, played like the desperate team; Golden State, one win from a title in only its second season, played like a team still searching for its first punch in a hostile, sunlit arena.

Background/Context

Golden State arrived in Atlanta leading the best-of-seven series 3-2 after a 64-55 win in Game 5 at Chase Center on Monday, October 26. That game was a defensive grind even by Finals standards: the first half finished 25-22, the lowest-scoring first half in Finals history, and the two teams combined to shoot just 5-for-29 from three-point range. Kiah Stokes led the Valkyries with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks, Veronica Burton added 13 points and 8 rebounds, and Tiffany Hayes scored 12, while Reese was held to 7 points on 2-for-8 shooting, albeit with 15 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 fouls, three of them offensive.

The series had already produced a full range of Finals drama before Game 6. Golden State, a 2025 expansion side, was trying to complete one of the fastest rises to a championship in league history, while Atlanta, the fourth seed, was trying to extend a series it had led and then watched slip away. A preview of Game 6 credited Stokes' defence on Reese as a defining theme of the recent games, and noted that Golden State's bench depth under coach Natalie Nakase had become a weapon as the series wore on. Atlanta, meanwhile, had spent the days before Game 6 complaining publicly about officiating after the Game 5 loss, with Reese saying, “A lot of us are getting fouled, and they're not calling it,” and coach Karl Smesko arguing the Dream should have gone to the foul line six to eight more times “just on that”.

The starting lineups told the same story of two settled, battle-tested sides. Golden State started Burton, Kaila Charles, Hayes, Stokes and Williams; Atlanta started Jordin Canada, Gray, Hillmon, Howard and Reese. The bookmakers, for their part, had made Atlanta a 4.5-point favourite for Game 6, with the total set at 147.5 points and the moneyline at Dream -185, Valkyries +154; one prediction had Atlanta winning 72-68 to force a Game 7.

WNBA Finals Game 6: Why a Finals Game Started at Lunchtime

The reason Game 6 tipped off at 12:30 p.m. ET — 9:30 a.m. on the West Coast, where Golden State fans watched on USA Network over breakfast — was brutally practical. The Dream's usual home, Gateway Center Arena, seats only about 3,500 people, so the Dream, the Valkyries and the WNBA wanted the Finals in a bigger building. Games 3 and 4 in Atlanta were therefore moved to the 17,000-seat State Farm Arena, home of the NBA's Atlanta Hawks. But the Hawks already had a regular-season game scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Thursday against the Cleveland Cavaliers, so the only way to play both games in the same arena on the same day was to start the Finals game at lunchtime and give arena staff the afternoon to flip the building.

The decision, announced on Monday, drew immediate criticism. Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr sarcastically called it “better than playing at the YMCA,” and Atlanta's ownership said in an open letter on Tuesday night that it had raised concerns about Finals scheduling conflicts “months ago” and again during the playoffs, only to be ignored. The letter pointed to a pattern: Game 3 had been moved a day early and Game 4 to an early-afternoon start because of a concert and the Hawks' home opener, and the Hawks were thanked for adjusting their schedule three times to accommodate the Finals.

The players, publicly at least, refused to make the start time an excuse. “I mean, it's the (WNBA) Finals. You just got to do what you got to do,” Dream guard Allisha Gray said. “We locked in on winning Game 6. I don't care playing at 8 a.m., 1 p.m., midnight. We got a championship to win.” Stokes, who has played her way into the Finals MVP conversation, struck the same note: “It doesn't matter what time (Game 6) is. At the end of the day, we just need 94 feet, two hoops in each other. It's a close-out game. Atlanta is a great team and we don't want to give them basically any life. So as much as we love 'Ballhalla,' we don't want to come back here. So we need to go in with the mentality that we have to win. It's do or die.”

For fans who could not skip work or wake early, the league offered a second chance: Game 6 was simulcast on USA Network, E! and Syfy, and was due to be re-aired on USA Network and CNBC at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday — the primetime slot the game itself could not occupy.

Reactions/Quotes

“I mean, it's the (WNBA) Finals. You just got to do what you got to do. We locked in on winning Game 6. I don't care playing at 8 a.m., 1 p.m., midnight. We got a championship to win,” said Dream guard Allisha Gray of the early tip-off.

“It doesn't matter what time (Game 6) is. At the end of the day, we just need 94 feet, two hoops in each other. It's a close-out game. Atlanta is a great team and we don't want to give them basically any life,” said Valkyries center Kiah Stokes.

“It's better than playing at the YMCA,” said Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr, sarcastically, of the midday Finals start.

“A lot of us are getting fouled, and they're not calling it. Or we're talking to the ref after and they're saying, 'Oh, we'll get you next time,'” said Atlanta star Angel Reese after Game 5, on the officiating in the series.

Game 6 also carried a quieter pregame story. Heiress Harris, the 10-year-old singer and social-media personality and youngest daughter of Atlanta rap star T.I. and his wife Tiny, performed the national anthem before tip-off, wowing the crowd in a glittery blue track jacket. The anthem had become a storyline of its own during these Finals: both teams had skipped “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the first five games, returning to the court shortly after it ended, a decision that drew criticism from Vice President J.D. Vance and comment from Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase had described the routine as part of the team's pregame preparation, and Williams had said it was not new; the Dream had said in 2020 that “the anthem does not represent freedom, justice and liberty for all Americans.”

Why It Matters

Game 6 matters for reasons well beyond one afternoon's score. For Golden State, it is the door to history: a championship in a franchise's second season, for a team that did not exist two years ago, would be one of the great expansion stories in American professional sport. For Atlanta, it is survival: a win forces a Game 7 and keeps alive a season that began with title ambitions and has repeatedly run into Golden State's defence.

It also matters as a test of how the league treats its own showcase. A WNBA Finals game played at lunchtime on a Thursday, while an NBA regular-season game takes the same arena in primetime the same night, is an image the league will not want repeated — and the Dream's open letter has already made sure the scheduling dispute will not be forgotten when the next Finals calendar is drawn up. The sold-out crowd in Atlanta, the breakfast-time audience on the West Coast and the primetime re-air all point in the same direction: the demand for this series was primetime-sized, even if the slot was not.

And for the wider sports calendar, the result sets up the weekend. A Golden State win ends the series on Thursday and starts a celebration in the Bay Area. An Atlanta win sends the series back to San Francisco for a winner-take-all Game 7 on Saturday, October 31 — Halloween night, under the lights, with everything on the line.

What Happens Next

If the Dream hold their second-quarter lead and win Game 6, Game 7 will be played on Saturday, October 31, at 8 p.m. ET, airing on USA Network, CNBC and Peacock, with the championship decided in a single game in San Francisco. If the Valkyries rally from their 25-point second-quarter deficit, the series ends in Atlanta and Golden State lifts its first trophy on the road.

Either way, the Hawks will take the State Farm Arena floor at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday against the Cavaliers, hours after the Finals game that forced the matinee, and the arena crew's turnaround will be complete. The WNBA, meanwhile, will face the scheduling questions the Dream raised in their open letter long before the next Finals tips off.
