The Jeffery Simmons trade stunned the NFL on Thursday, October 29, 2026. The Chicago Bears agreed to acquire the All-Pro defensive tackle from the Tennessee Titans in a blockbuster deal reported by ESPN, NFL Network and The Ringer, sending two first-round draft picks to Tennessee in a bet that one dominant interior lineman can turn a promising season into a genuine Super Bowl run. The Titans will receive Chicago's first-round picks in 2027 and 2028 plus a 2027 fourth-round pick, while the Bears also receive a 2028 fifth-round pick along with Simmons, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Neither team had formally announced the deal as of Thursday morning, but multiple leading insiders reported it as agreed, and the terms were consistent across outlets.

Key Points

• The Bears agreed to acquire All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, 29, from the Titans for two first-round picks (2027 and 2028) and a 2027 fourth-rounder.
• Chicago also receives a 2028 fifth-round pick in the deal, reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and The Ringer's Tom Pelissero.
• Simmons was a first-team All-Pro in 2025 with a career-high 11 sacks and leads all defensive tackles in pressures this season, with 28 in seven games.
• The Bears are 5-2 and second in the NFC North, while the 1-6 Titans are rebuilding under first-year head coach Robert Saleh.
• Simmons signed a three-year, $105.8 million extension with Tennessee in June 2026, with $100 million guaranteed, and is under contract through 2030.

What Happened

The news broke on Thursday morning, less than 24 hours after Simmons himself had told reporters he expected to stay in Tennessee. Standing in the Titans locker room on Wednesday, he said he had heard nothing from his agent or the team about a move. "I haven't heard anything from my agent," Simmons said, according to Bleacher Report. "As far as I know, I'm gonna be here." He added that he did not worry about things he could not control. By Thursday morning, Pelissero had reported the trade, Schefter had confirmed it minutes later and then published the full terms, and Rapoport had matched the report — the kind of three-way confirmation that, in NFL reporting, usually means a deal is done barring a failed physical or a last-minute snag.

The price is historic. Simmons is the first defensive tackle in the common draft era, which began in 1967, to be traded for multiple first-round picks, according to USA TODAY. It is also the first time Chicago has traded away multiple first-round picks since acquiring edge rusher Khalil Mack in 2019, Schefter noted. That comparison matters in Chicago, where the Mack deal electrified the city, delivered a division title in 2018 and then faded as the roster around him thinned. The Bears are betting this time is different: they are 5-2, they have a young franchise quarterback, and they are adding a 29-year-old star in his prime rather than a veteran at the end of his peak.

The timing, twelve days before the November 10 trade deadline, gives Simmons time to learn defensive coordinator Dennis Allen's system and to be ready for the stretch run. The Bears sit second in the NFC North, trailing only the unbeaten Minnesota Vikings at 6-0, and they are battling for playoff position in a crowded NFC. Tennessee, meanwhile, is 1-6 in Saleh's first season, has finished 3-14 in each of the last two years, has not won consecutive games since 2022 and currently sits No. 2 in the 2027 draft order — a position that two extra first-round picks will only strengthen.

Background/Context

Simmons has spent his entire NFL career with the Titans since they drafted him 19th overall out of Mississippi State in 2019. He has grown into one of the league's most feared interior defenders: a four-time Pro Bowl selection, a first-team All-Pro in 2025 and a two-time second-team All-Pro, with 46.5 career sacks, 72 tackles for loss and nine forced fumbles across eight seasons. His 11 sacks last season were a career high and broke the Titans' single-season record for a defensive tackle, previously held by Jurrell Casey at 10.5. He was elected a Titans team captain in September for the sixth consecutive season, a measure of his standing in a locker room that has endured the worst stretch in franchise history.

That standing is what made Thursday's news so jarring in Nashville. Simmons has been the face of the franchise through the lean years, a locker-room leader and a fan favourite, and only four months ago the Titans recommitted to him with a three-year, $105.8 million extension carrying $100 million guaranteed. His average annual value of $35.276 million ranks third among interior defensive linemen, according to Over the Cap. At the time, general manager Mike Borgonzi called him a pillar of the franchise. "Jeffery Simmons is a pillar for our franchise and embodies what it means to be a Titan," Borgonzi said in June. The extension, which runs through the 2030 season, now travels with Simmons to Chicago.

This season's numbers explain why the Bears paid so much. Simmons leads the Titans with four sacks in seven games, along with six tackles for loss and four passes defended, and he has played 86.6% of Tennessee's defensive snaps — a huge workload for a 300-pound interior lineman. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, his 28 pressures are the most among defensive tackles this season, including 10 pressures and three sacks when double-teamed, both also league-leading marks for his position. ESPN's Kevin Clark noted that Simmons leads all defensive tackles in pressures and sacks when facing double teams. In other words, even when opponents devote two blockers to him, he still gets home.

Jeffery Simmons Trade Gives Bears a New Defensive Centrepiece

For Chicago, the fit is obvious. The Bears already own the league's eighth-ranked defence, but their pass rush has relied heavily on scheme: defensive coordinator Dennis Allen blitzes aggressively to manufacture pressure, and the team's 37.9% pressure rate ranks only 12th in the league. Simmons changes that maths. Paired inside with veteran Grady Jarrett, he gives Allen a lineman who collapses the pocket on his own, freeing edge rushers Montez Sweat, Austin Booker and Dayo Odeyingbo — who have nine sacks between them this season — to work one-on-one outside. Sweat, who has just returned from a two-game suspension, is also a former Mississippi State teammate of Simmons, reuniting a college pairing on an NFL defensive line.

The move also fills the hole left when Chicago traded Gervon Dexter Sr. to the Atlanta Falcons in late August. Dexter has since signed a huge extension in Atlanta, and the Bears' interior rotation has been solid rather than special: Booker and defensive back Kyler Gordon lead the team with four sacks each, a telling stat for a team chasing a championship. Simmons immediately becomes the centrepiece of the front, the player opponents must game-plan around, and the kind of signing that lifts everyone else. "For all intents and purposes, Jeffery Simmons is the NFL's best defensive tackle," longtime Bears writer Robert Zeglinski told For The Win. "He is a one-man matchup problem who demands double-teams and chews them up anyway. On an offensively-focused Bears roster with solid but not great rotational players on their defensive front, Simmons becomes the immediate centrepiece who will lift everyone up like a rising tide."

The betting market agreed instantly. The Bears shortened from 14-1 to 11-1 to win the Super Bowl at BetMGM immediately after the trade news surfaced, according to Yahoo Sports' Ben Fawkes — an unusually large move for a single in-season trade, and a sign of how highly oddsmakers rate Simmons. Chicago has not reached a Super Bowl since the 2006 season and has not won one since the famed 1985 team. This deal is a declaration that the wait is supposed to end now, not in some future window.

Reactions/Quotes

Bears head coach Ben Johnson was asked about the trade deadline on Wednesday, before the Simmons news broke, and his answer now reads like a man who knew something big was coming. "There's a lot going on," Johnson said. "Certainly [general manager] Ryan's [Poles] domain, and yet we have constant dialogue of what this team needs and where we can impact ourselves, not just this year, but years in the future as well." Poles, who has built the Bears methodically around a young core, has now made the boldest move of his tenure — and done it with a player under contract for four more seasons, not a rental.

In Tennessee, the reaction was grief mixed with grim understanding. Titans Wire called Thursday "a dark day in Nashville" and "the start of a new era," noting that Simmons had been the face of the franchise and a locker-room leader "through the worst era of Titans football." The same outlet noted that the move mirrors similar deals for top defensive players in 2026, with the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns also trading away top talent to stockpile draft capital for rebuilds. Borgonzi, the general manager who praised Simmons as a pillar in June, now follows that blueprint: three premium picks for a 29-year-old star, on a 1-6 team going nowhere this season, is the kind of return rebuilds are built on.

Simmons, his coach Robert Saleh and Borgonzi had not commented on the deal as of Thursday morning, according to Titans Wire. That silence is normal while a trade is finalised — physicals, contract mechanics and league paperwork all have to clear — but it leaves the human side of the story unwritten for now. Simmons said on Wednesday that he had not heard from the team; by Thursday he was, according to every major insider, a Chicago Bear. The abruptness of that turn, from "I'm gonna be here" to traded within a day, is part of why the story has exploded across the NFL.

Why It Matters

This trade matters beyond one team because it resets the market for elite defensive tackles. Interior linemen have traditionally been valued below edge rushers and quarterbacks, and no defensive tackle in the modern draft era had ever commanded multiple first-round picks — until now. If Simmons transforms Chicago's defence the way the Bears believe he will, other teams with dominant interior players will point to this deal in every future negotiation, and other contenders will feel pressure to match it. If he does not, the Bears will have spent two first-round picks — the currency of sustained contention — on a player whose contract, at more than $35 million a year, limits what else they can build.

For Tennessee, the deal is an admission. Trading a captain, a homegrown star and a player extended four months ago is not a move a team makes if it believes it is close. The Titans are instead choosing draft capital over sentiment, betting that three high picks — including two first-rounders in a draft where they already hold the No. 2 slot — will rebuild the roster faster than one great player on a losing team could. The immediate cost is obvious: Simmons played 86.6% of the snaps, and Tennessee must now turn to a rotation starting with veterans Solomon Thomas and John Franklin-Myers to replace him. The long-term payoff depends entirely on what Borgonzi does with the picks.

For the NFC North race, the deal changes the balance of power right now. The Vikings are unbeaten, but the Bears at 5-2 with Simmons added to an already top-ten defence are a different proposition in January than they were a week ago. Playoff football is won in the trenches, and Chicago has just bought the best trench player available. The rest of the conference noticed: a Super Bowl odds move from 14-1 to 11-1 in a single morning is the market's way of saying the Bears are no longer a nice story, but a threat.

What Happens Next

The next steps are procedural but important. The teams must finalise the trade, Simmons must pass a physical, and the league must process the deal before Chicago can put him on the field. The Bears will then work him into Allen's defence, most likely as the starting three-technique tackle next to Jarrett, with Sweat and Booker on the edges. His debut date will depend on when the paperwork clears, but with the deadline still twelve days away, Chicago has time to integrate him before the season's defining stretch.

In Nashville, the rebuild accelerates. The Titans now hold extra first-round picks in 2027 and 2028 plus a 2027 fourth-rounder, and the trade deadline on November 10 may bring more moves as Borgonzi shops other veterans. The franchise must also manage the locker room: trading a six-time captain days after he publicly said he expected to stay will test trust, and Saleh's first season, already at 1-6, now has a new emotional low to navigate. The draft, not December, is Tennessee's season now.

For Simmons, the move is a career crossroads in the best sense. He leaves the worst stretch in Titans history for a 5-2 contender, a top-ten defence, a reunion with Sweat and a genuine shot at the postseason he has rarely tasted in Tennessee. He also carries the weight of the price: two first-round picks and a $105.8 million contract mean Chicago expects dominance, not just production. The first test will come quickly, under the lights, against the offensive lines that have made the Bears blitz to survive. If Simmons is who the numbers say he is, they will not have to blitz any more.
