Dropbox is cutting about 9% of its global workforce and parting ways with its chief technology officer, the cloud storage company confirmed on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, in a regulatory filing that adds another big name to October's fast-growing list of tech layoffs. The Dropbox layoffs will hit roughly 200 roles, even as the company insists the business is profitable and its third-quarter results are tracking in line with, or above, its earlier guidance.

The announcement, disclosed in a Form 8-K filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, pairs a restructuring costing an estimated $27 million to $33 million with the departure of CTO Ali Dasdan, who steps down on November 18. It is Dropbox's third major workforce reduction in less than four years, and it lands in a month that has already seen job cuts at Amazon, eBay, Electronic Arts, Qualcomm and Netflix.

Key Points

• Dropbox will cut about 9% of its global workforce, roughly 200 roles, across Engineering, Design, Product and general and administrative teams.
• Chief Technology Officer Ali Dasdan will step down on November 18, 2026, under a separation agreement worth a $515,000 pro rata bonus plus about $1.3 million in cash.
• The company estimates $27 million to $33 million in severance and related costs, most of it recognised in the fourth quarter, with the rest in 2027.
• New CEO Ashraf Alkarmi called the decision "difficult" and "hard" but said the business is profitable and the cuts refocus spending on growth priorities.
• Dropbox had 2,113 full-time employees at December 31, 2025, and will report third-quarter results after market close on November 5.

What Happened

Dropbox unveiled the cuts on Wednesday, saying the October 28 decision would align "the company's investments and team structure with its top product and growth priorities and support its long-term strategy." The language, from the SEC filing, is the standard corporate framing for a restructuring. The numbers underneath it are more concrete: about one in eleven Dropbox jobs is going, at a cash cost of $27 million to $33 million, mostly severance, benefits and related costs.

The filing says the company has already accrued compensation expense through September 30, 2026 for part of the annual bonus amounts, and expects to recognise $20 million to $25 million of incremental expense tied to the severance, benefits and related costs. Most of that will land in the fourth quarter, with the remainder following in 2027.

Alongside the layoffs, Dropbox announced that Dasdan will leave the company early next month. His exit is dated November 18 in the filing. Under his previously disclosed change-in-control and severance agreement, plus a new separation agreement, Dasdan will receive a pro rata bonus of $515,000 and a lump-sum cash payment of approximately $1.3 million, along with certain additional benefits in line with those received by other affected employees.

The affected roles span Engineering, Design, Product and G&A teams, according to CEO Ashraf Alkarmi's memo to staff, which the company has since posted publicly. That spread matters: it is not a single division being wound down, but a company-wide reallocation of spending toward what Alkarmi calls the firm's "chosen customers" and "critical workflows."

Background: A Profitable Company Still Shrinking Its Workforce

Dropbox, founded in 2007 and headquartered in California, built its name by making cloud storage simple for ordinary users long before Apple, Google and Microsoft bundled storage into their own ecosystems. That early advantage has become a long grind: the core file-sync-and-share business is mature, growth has slowed, and the company has spent the last three years repeatedly trimming headcount to fund bets on artificial intelligence, above all its Dash AI search product.

The October 2026 cuts are the third round of that retrenchment. In April 2023, Dropbox cut about 16% of its staff, roughly 500 people, in its first major reduction, framing it as a pivot toward AI. In October 2024 it went further, cutting approximately 20% of its global workforce, or 528 roles, with then-CEO Drew Houston writing that maintaining the company's structure and investment levels was "no longer sustainable" as demand softened in the core business.

Together, the 2023 and 2024 rounds removed more than 1,000 jobs, and the 2024 round alone cost $47.2 million in severance and benefits booked in the fourth quarter of that year, according to company disclosures. The new 9% round is smaller in percentage terms, but it continues the same pattern: a profitable company choosing to get smaller in order to spend more heavily on fewer priorities.

The leadership backdrop has also changed. Co-founder Drew Houston stepped down as chief executive in May 2026 after 19 years in the role, moving to executive chairman, and longtime insider Ashraf Alkarmi was promoted to succeed him. Dasdan's departure now removes another senior leader within months of that transition, leaving Alkarmi to put his own stamp on the company's technology organisation.

Dropbox Layoffs Hit Engineering, Design and Product Teams

Alkarmi's memo does not hide behind the filing's dry language. He called the decision "difficult" and "hard," and acknowledged that the cuts would land on people across the company's core building teams. "Our business is profitable, and we've built real momentum this year," he wrote. "Our two-year strategy sets a clear direction for growth: solving more of our customers' critical workflows; reaching more of our chosen customers, including larger companies; and bringing our technology to new markets."

"Delivering on that strategy requires concentrating our resources on the priorities that will have the greatest potential for customer impact and growth," Alkarmi added. The company, he said, is now focused on reworking where it invests its money, how it is organised, and what work can be simplified, scaled back or stopped entirely. Those actions, he conceded, point inevitably toward a smaller team.

For affected employees, the package is comparatively generous by tech-industry standards, and it mirrors the terms Dropbox offered in 2024. US staff will receive 16 weeks of pay starting Wednesday, plus an additional week for each completed year at the company, along with a prorated lump-sum payment based on their 2026 bonus target for those on the corporate bonus plan. Equity and transition support are included, and international packages will follow local practices and requirements.

US employees who elect and are eligible will also receive six months of subsidised COBRA healthcare, while access to the Modern Health mental-health service continues through the end of the separation month. Departing staff may keep one Dropbox laptop, one mobile device if assigned, and all existing desktop peripherals, and will receive free job-placement services and career coaching. Alkarmi's memo also promised "immigration support" for impacted visa holders, a detail that matters in a workforce with many employees on work visas.

Reactions and Quotes

Alkarmi's own words set the company's public tone: a profitable business making a painful choice, not a company in distress. "Our business is profitable, and we've built real momentum this year," he wrote, before arguing that delivering on the two-year strategy "requires concentrating our resources on the priorities that will have the greatest potential for customer impact and growth."

He also described the decision itself in unusually plain terms for a CEO memo, calling it "difficult" and "hard." That framing echoes Houston's 2024 letter, in which the co-founder wrote: "As CEO, I take full responsibility for this decision and the circumstances that led to it, and I'm truly sorry to those impacted by this change." The through-line across both rounds is the same: leadership presenting layoffs as a strategic refocusing rather than a response to crisis.

Investors, at least in the company's telling, have reason not to panic. Dropbox said separately that it expects third-quarter results to be in line with or above its prior guidance for revenue and adjusted operating margin, a signal designed to separate the restructuring from the company's trading performance. The full numbers arrive after market close on November 5, with a conference call the same day.

No statement from Dasdan about his departure had been published at the time of this article, and Dropbox has not named a successor as chief technology officer. The company has also not said which specific products or projects will be scaled back or stopped as part of the reorganisation.

Why It Matters

The Dropbox cuts matter for three reasons. First, they confirm that the 2026 tech layoff wave is not confined to giants cutting tens of thousands of jobs. When a profitable, mid-sized company with just over 2,000 employees cuts one in eleven roles, it signals that cost discipline has become the default posture across the sector, not just a response to over-hiring at the largest firms.

Second, the timing underlines how AI is reshaping tech employment from both directions at once. Companies are spending record sums on AI infrastructure — Meta alone unveiled a $95 billion fundraising push this week — while simultaneously trimming the human teams that build and maintain their existing products. Dropbox's own history makes the point: its 2023 and 2024 cuts were explicitly framed as funding for AI investment, and the 2026 round continues that reallocation.

Third, the package itself is a window into how layoffs now work in practice. Sixteen weeks of base severance, bonus proration, COBRA subsidies, device retention and visa support have become a kind of standard for established tech firms, and the detailed disclosure of Dasdan's $515,000 bonus and $1.3 million payment shows how executive exits are documented alongside rank-and-file cuts in the same filing.

What Happens Next

The immediate calendar is clear. Dasdan's departure takes effect on November 18. Dropbox reports third-quarter results after market close on November 5, and that call will be the first chance for analysts to question Alkarmi on which teams and products absorb the cuts, and whether further rounds are planned. Most of the $27 million to $33 million restructuring cost will be recognised in the fourth quarter, with the rest in 2027.

Watch also for what is not yet announced: a new chief technology officer, any changes to the Dash AI roadmap, and whether the reorganisation touches Dropbox's pricing or product lineup for larger business customers — the "chosen customers" Alkarmi's strategy singles out. If the company's third-quarter numbers beat guidance, as it has signalled they might, the cuts will be read as discipline. If they miss, they will be read as retrenchment.

For the roughly 200 departing employees, the practical next steps are severance payments beginning this week, the COBRA election window, and the job-placement and coaching support Dropbox has promised. For the wider tech workforce, October's steady drumbeat of cuts — Amazon trimmed about 250 devices and services roles on Wednesday after cutting about 1,000 core retail jobs earlier in the month, with eBay, Electronic Arts, Qualcomm and Netflix also reporting reductions — is a reminder that no corner of the industry is untouched.
