Apple's first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, is facing its first real test less than a week after going on sale, as early buyers report that the inner display of the $2,000 device can crack along its centre crease after just hours or days of use. The iPhone Duo cracked screen reports, which first surfaced on Reddit and other social media over the weekend of October 24-25, 2026, describe the same unsettling sequence again and again: a hinge that suddenly feels stiff, a crunching or popping sound, and then a large crack running down the fold. Apple has acknowledged the problem, saying it affects only a small number of units, and is directing affected owners to AppleCare for a replacement.

Key Points

• Early iPhone Duo buyers report inner screens cracking along the centre crease after hours or days of use, often with a crunching sound as the phone is unfolded.
• Bloomberg independently verified the problem with more than half a dozen customers, who supplied photos of damaged devices or evidence of Apple support conversations.
• Apple says it is aware of an issue affecting the inner display on a small number of units and tells owners to contact AppleCare for a replacement.
• Repair specialists at iFixit believe a hinge component is failing and cracking the screen from below, rather than the display panel itself being at fault.
• Despite the complaints, HSBC and Goldman Sachs remain bullish on Apple ahead of its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings on Monday, November 2, 2026.

What Happened

The iPhone Duo went on sale on Friday, October 23, 2026, after pre-orders that began on October 16 sold out within minutes. Within days, owners began posting strikingly similar accounts online. One customer in Australia said the phone had been in use for about six hours and had been opened fewer than 20 times when, while showing it to a friend, he felt something catch around the internal hinge and heard an audible crack as the screen broke along the hinge. There were, he said, no marks or damage on the inner screen's surface or on the external hinge to suggest anything had been caught or damaged. A customer in Dallas reported a screen cracked within six hours of ownership, after perhaps four folds, when the hinge grew tight and then made a loud pop as he pushed past it. Both customers said Apple stores replaced their devices.

Bloomberg News has since independently verified the issue with more than half a dozen customers, who provided photographs showing damage to their devices or evidence of their support conversations with Apple. The pattern in those verified cases is consistent: the hinge feels stuck, harder or slower to open than usual, a crunch-like sound follows, and a crack forms along the centre crease. Some users also reported a white patch or another display malfunction on the right side of the screen, and at least one said the damaged inner screen began registering touches that were never made. Reports first surfaced on Reddit and other social media sites, and there were about ten other similar reports globally, including some in China, according to The Times.

Background: Apple's Biggest Hardware Bet in Years

The iPhone Duo is Apple's biggest change to the iPhone since the original device debuted nearly two decades ago, and the company's first foldable phone. Apple introduced it in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, after more than a decade of development, and priced it at $1,999 in the United States and £1,999 in the United Kingdom. Media reports say Apple has raised shipping targets for the device by 44 percent, and Counterpoint analysis forecasts Apple will sell six million Duos this year — a figure that puts the fault reports so far in context as a small fraction of initial sales, even as each individual case is expensive and conspicuous for its owner.

Foldable phones have always lived or died on the hinge. The crease is the one part of the device that must flex thousands of times without failing, and it is the part buyers inspect first. Apple knew that scrutiny was coming: its head of hardware engineering, Tom Marieb, had publicly encouraged customers to hold the company accountable for the durability of the crease, while chief executive John Ternus had dismissed competing Android foldables as cheap and poorly made. That confidence is now part of the story, because the first public durability questions about the Duo are arriving not from a laboratory stress test alone, but from ordinary owners unfolding a phone they bought days ago.

iPhone Duo Cracked Screen: What Owners Are Reporting

The owner accounts share a level of detail that makes them hard to dismiss as ordinary accidental damage. Tom Battle, an Apple customer from San Diego, told Bloomberg: "I went to unfold it and it felt stuck/harder/slower to open than usual. And when I opened it it had the lines on the screen." He added: "You could feel a bump or loose piece under the display." Venture capitalist Jonathan King had a similar experience, saying he heard a crunch-like sound when opening his device on October 26. "I had all intent to post a positive review of my Duo experience today, until it happened to me," King said. "The smaller outer screen works just fine, but the inner screen is now unusable," he added, noting that the device thinks he is touching the inner screen when he is not.

Apple appeared to acknowledge the hinge angle directly, if briefly: a support page titled "iPhone Duo Troubleshooting Hinge Issues" was temporarily created, suggesting steps if a device would not open or close completely or made an unexpected noise while opening or closing, including removing third-party cases or screen protectors and checking for particles or dust along the hinge and for dents or scratches on the enclosure. The page was later no longer accessible. Separately, a durability test by YouTuber Zack Nelson, who runs the channel JerryRigEverything, found that dust and sand sprinkled on the device entered the hinge and left it unable to close completely, with the magnets that pull the two halves together unable to overcome the lodged debris. In a test applying force against the normal folding direction while the screen was open, green lines appeared on the inner display, and additional force caused the lines to multiply until both the display and touch functions stopped working entirely. That test applied far stronger physical force than typical use, so it must be distinguished from the likelihood of real-world failures, and Nelson noted that Samsung Galaxy Fold models he has tested did not suffer the same type of failure.

Reactions and Quotes

Apple's formal response has been short and consistent. In a statement, the company said: "The response to iPhone Duo from early users has been incredibly positive, and we are seeing exciting things from developers who are rapidly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor." It continued: "We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement." Apple added that most Duos are not affected by the problem, and that the units that are affected tend to exhibit the defect quickly.

Repair platform iFixit, which studies device components through teardowns, said it believes the cause is a hinge component failing and cracking the screen from below, rather than a fault with the display panel itself. If that diagnosis is right, it matters for the fix: a hinge-component problem points to manufacturing or assembly variation in a small batch, rather than a fundamental flaw in the folding display technology itself — though Apple has not confirmed any cause publicly. On Wall Street, the reaction has been notably calm. HSBC analyst Nicolas Cote-Colisson said sales of the smartphone "look promising despite display issues on a small number of units," maintained his Buy rating on Apple shares, and kept his $366 price target, implying about 5 percent upside. He expects Ternus to use the earnings call to clarify the Duo's display issue, and noted that demand for the iPhone 18 also looks strong.

Goldman Sachs analyst Michael Ng reaffirmed his Buy rating in his own earnings preview and raised his price target from $360 to $390, suggesting about 12 percent upside. Ng expects iPhone Duo sales to drive Apple's revenue growth in fiscal 2027, helping to offset a modest drop in sales of other iPhone models caused by Apple's recent price increases. Across Wall Street, Apple shares still carry a Moderate Buy consensus rating, based on 16 Buys, 12 Holds and four Sells assigned by 32 analysts over the past three months, although the average price target of $338.60 suggests about 2 percent downside from recent levels — a reminder that the bullish Duo calls sit inside a more cautious overall picture.

Why It Matters

The stakes go well beyond a handful of replacement phones. The Duo is Apple's entry into a category its rivals have sold for years, and its $2,000 price tag makes it the most expensive mainstream iPhone Apple has ever shipped. A durability question in the first week therefore lands differently from a software bug: it strikes at the exact engineering challenge — the fold — that justifies the price, and it arrives just as Apple is asking buyers to trust a new form factor with their money for years. At the same time, the scale of the problem matters as much as its existence. With six million units forecast for this year, a defect confined to a small number of early units would be a costly embarrassment and a customer-service headache, not a product recall. If the reports widen, however, the calculus changes fast, because a hinge flaw cannot be patched over the air.

There is also a timing problem. Apple reports its fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 earnings after the market closes on Monday, November 2, with a conference call at 5 p.m. Eastern time at which Ternus will participate for the first time as chief executive alongside chief financial officer Kevan Parekh. Wall Street expects revenue of about $113.39 billion, up 11 percent from $102.5 billion a year ago, and adjusted earnings per share of $1.99, up from $1.85. Zacks puts the consensus slightly lower, at $112.95 billion in revenue and $1.98 per share, with iPhone sales of $57.18 billion, up 16.6 percent, iPad sales of $6.54 billion, down 5.9 percent, and wearables, home and accessories at $9.00 billion, roughly flat. The reported quarter ended in late September, before the Duo went on sale, so the results will not show Duo demand directly — but the earnings call will be the first time Ternus faces analysts since the crack reports, and the display question is now certain to come up.

What Happens Next

Three things will decide how this story ends. First, whether new crack reports keep appearing at the same rate or fade as the first production batch works through the system — Apple's own statement suggests affected units show the defect quickly, which would mean the count should stabilise if the cause is limited. Second, what Apple says on the November 2 earnings call, and whether it offers any firmer explanation, repair programme or guidance about affected serial numbers. Third, whether regulators, consumer groups or class-action lawyers treat the early reports as a pattern worth pursuing, something that has happened to other first-generation foldables. For owners, the practical advice is already clear from Apple itself: anyone whose inner display cracks, shows lines or white patches, or registers phantom touches should contact AppleCare for a replacement rather than attempting a repair, and should keep photos and support records.

For buyers still deciding, the honest position is that the Duo's early reception has been genuinely enthusiastic — pre-orders sold out in minutes, developers are updating apps for the foldable form factor, and two major banks are raising price targets on the strength of it — while a real, verified defect is affecting a small number of units. That is not a contradiction; it is the normal, uncomfortable first week of a genuinely new product. The question for Apple is whether it can keep the defect small, explain it quickly, and protect the trust that a $2,000 phone demands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my iPhone Duo going to crack? Based on Apple's statement and the reports so far, most units are unaffected, and affected units tend to show the defect quickly after purchase. A crack is not expected on a normal, undamaged device, but owners should watch for stiffness, unusual sounds or lines along the crease when unfolding.

What should I do if my iPhone Duo screen cracks? Apple says affected users should contact AppleCare for a replacement. Keep photographs of the damage and any support conversation, and do not attempt to force the hinge or repair the display yourself.

Did Apple admit the iPhone Duo has a defect? Apple said it is aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. It has not confirmed a cause; iFixit believes a hinge component is failing and cracking the screen from below.

How much does the iPhone Duo cost? The foldable starts at $1,999 in the United States and £1,999 in the United Kingdom. Pre-orders began on October 16, 2026, and the device went on sale globally on October 23, 2026.

Will this hurt Apple shares? HSBC and Goldman Sachs remain bullish, with price targets of $366 and $390 respectively, and both expect Duo sales to support growth in fiscal 2027. The broader analyst consensus is more cautious, with an average target of $338.60, and the November 2 earnings call is the next major test.
