Dolores Huerta dies at 96, closing a life that reshaped American labour from the grape fields of California's Central Valley to the halls of Washington. Her family announced on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, that the United Farm Workers co-founder had died at her home in Bakersfield, California. A family spokesman said the cause was cancer, according to the USA TODAY account of the announcement, although an initial public version of the family's statement had not yet given a cause.

Key Points

• Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the organisation that became the United Farm Workers, died on October 28, 2026, at her home in Bakersfield, California. She was 96.
• Her family announced her death through the Dolores Huerta Foundation, asking for privacy and promising plans later to honour her life and legacy.
• Huerta co-founded the National Farm Workers Association with Cesar Chavez in 1962, led the Delano grape strike and boycott campaigns, and helped win the California Agricultural Labor Relations Act of 1975.
• She coined the rallying cry "Si se puede" — "Yes, we can" — later adopted in spirit by Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
• In early 2026, Huerta publicly accused Chavez, who died in 1993, of sexually abusing her in the 1960s, a disclosure that complicated the history of the movement she helped build.

What Happened

The announcement came on Wednesday morning through the foundation Huerta herself had created in 2002. "We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved mother, Dolores Huerta, has passed away today," the family wrote in a social media message shared through the Dolores Huerta Foundation, according to news reports of the statement. The family asked for privacy and said it would share plans soon for honouring her life and legacy.

USA TODAY, reporting the death from the Palm Springs Desert Sun obituary, said Huerta died at home in Bakersfield and that a family spokesman identified cancer as the cause. Reuters, in its own obituary dispatch, reported that Huerta died on Wednesday at 96 and described her as one of the foremost women in American labour history. The Associated Press, carried by NPR stations, likewise reported that her family said through her foundation that she died Wednesday at home, without initially giving further detail in that version.

Huerta had remained publicly active well into her nineties. Her foundation held a sold-out celebration of her 96th birthday in Los Angeles in June 2026, designed as a fundraiser to continue grassroots organising work across California. Even in her final year, she was still marching, speaking and registering voters — a schedule that friends and colleagues had long treated as unremarkable for a woman who had spent more than six decades organising.

Her death comes less than a week before the November 3 midterm elections, a moment when the voting and civic-participation work she championed for decades is again at the centre of American politics. It also arrives in a year when Huerta herself forced a painful public reckoning with the movement's past, speaking out in March 2026 about abuse she said she had kept secret for 60 years.

Background and Context

Huerta was born Dolores Clara Fernandez on April 10, 1930, in Dawson, New Mexico, a mining town in the state's north. After her parents divorced, she moved with her mother and brothers to Stockton, California. Her mother worked as a waitress, cannery worker and cook before running a hotel, sometimes providing food and lodging to farmworkers who could not afford it.

Huerta graduated from Stockton High School in 1947 and earned a teaching certificate. She briefly taught in an elementary school, and what she saw there changed her life's direction. Children arrived hungry and without adequate clothing, and she later recalled deciding that she could do more for those families outside the classroom than inside it. She turned to community organising.

In the 1950s she worked with the Community Service Organization, a California Latino civil rights group, where she met Cesar Chavez. In 1960 she organised the Agricultural Workers Association, and two years later the pair founded the National Farm Workers Association. The odds, Huerta later recalled, looked absurd to outsiders. Farmworkers were scattered across vast agricultural regions, earned very little, and had almost no workplace protections. "People thought we were crazy," she said in a recollection quoted in the obituary. "They asked: 'How are you going to organize farm workers? They are poor, powerless immigrants. They don't have any money and they can't vote.'"

The movement's defining confrontation began in 1965 in Delano. Filipino farmworkers, led by Larry Itliong, struck against table-grape growers, and Huerta, Chavez and their organisation joined them. Huerta worked alongside Itliong, helped manage boycott campaigns and negotiated with grape companies. Workers faced strikebreakers, hostility and violence; organisers answered with marches, picket lines and the nonviolent civil disobedience tactics of the wider civil rights movement.

A nationwide boycott of California table grapes turned a Central Valley labour dispute into a national test of consumer power. Millions of Americans stopped buying grapes, and major growers eventually signed union contracts that brought benefits and workplace protections that had once seemed unattainable. In 1972 the organisation became the United Farm Workers. Three years later, California enacted the Agricultural Labor Relations Act, guaranteeing agricultural workers the right to organise and bargain collectively and requiring employers to negotiate in good faith.

According to Reuters, the contracts the union negotiated delivered job security, health care, retirement plans, a credit union and job-specific protections such as guaranteed rest periods, toilets in the fields, clean drinking water and protection from pesticides. Huerta served the union as chief negotiator, strike organiser, lobbyist and reformer during its heyday in the 1960s and 1970s, and remained a vice president until she stepped down as an officer in 1999 after 37 years.

Her activism repeatedly crossed into the defining political moments of California. She was with Senator Robert F. Kennedy at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968, after he won California's Democratic presidential primary, and joined his entourage as it left the stage. Minutes later, Kennedy was shot in a hotel pantry and died the following day. Two decades later, in 1988, a police officer struck Huerta with a baton during a demonstration outside a San Francisco hotel where Vice President George H.W. Bush was speaking, breaking her ribs and rupturing her spleen. She underwent emergency surgery, spent months recovering, later received an $825,000 settlement from San Francisco that she used to benefit farmworkers, and the city changed its crowd-control policies.

Beyond labour, Huerta spent months in Washington lobbying for the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, which provided legal status to millions of undocumented immigrants. She advocated for immigrants, women and expanded Latino political participation, mentored women seeking elected office, and worked with the Feminist Majority Foundation after taking leave from the union.

Dolores Huerta Dies: The 'Si Se Puede' Legacy

Few phrases in American protest history travelled as far as the three words Huerta gave the movement. "Si se puede" — rendered in English as "Yes, we can" or "Yes, it can be done" — began as a farmworker chant and became a fixture at labour demonstrations, political campaigns and protest marches far from the fields where it started. Barack Obama adopted a version of the phrase for his successful 2008 presidential campaign, and when he presented Huerta with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012, the nation's highest civilian honour, he joked that he had stolen her slogan.

The honours accumulated over a long life: murals depicted her, schools and public buildings carried her name, and in 2018 then-Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation designating April 10 as Dolores Huerta Day in California. She was the subject of the 2017 documentary "Dolores," directed by Peter Bratt. Yet Huerta resisted settling into a purely ceremonial role. Her Bakersfield-based foundation focused on leadership development, civic engagement and grassroots organising, and she kept a busy lecture and protest schedule into her nineties, speaking about race, poverty, LGBTQ+ rights and women's rights, and, in recent years, against the immigration policies of President Donald Trump.

That longevity is part of why her final public disclosure landed with such force. In early 2026, Huerta publicly accused Chavez of sexually abusing her during their years together in the California labour movement. According to the USA TODAY obituary account, she said Chavez raped her in a vehicle in a secluded California grape field in 1966, and that she had remained silent because of loyalty to the farmworker movement, distrust of law enforcement and fear she would not be believed. "I saw him, again, as my boss, as my hero, as, you know, somebody that would do the impossible," she said in the account provided for the obituary. "I never talked about it to anybody, and the reason I didn't is because I just didn't want to hurt the movement."

Huerta also said two of her children resulted from sexual encounters with Chavez, including the rape, and said she did not know at the time about allegations that he had abused underage girls. "Unfortunately, he used some of his great leadership to abuse women and children," she said. The Associated Press account similarly reported that she revealed this year that she was sexually abused in the 1960s by Chavez, leading to the birth of two children, a secret she kept for 60 years and long after he died in 1993. Chavez, who died more than three decades ago, cannot respond to the accusation, and the disclosure has complicated the history of a movement both leaders spent decades building. Huerta also confronted criticism from women who said sexism and sexual harassment within the union had not always been adequately addressed.

Huerta herself framed her life's work in collective, not personal, terms. "When people come together and take collective action, whether it's in a march, whether it's in a union election or, most important, come together to vote," she said in 2020, "this is how we make change." That sentence, more than any single contract or statute, may be the clearest summary of what she believed organising was for.

Reactions and Quotes

News of her death spread quickly on Wednesday, carried first by the family's foundation statement and then by obituaries from Reuters, the Associated Press and USA TODAY. The family itself struck a restrained tone, announcing the death, asking for privacy and promising plans to celebrate her life. No funeral or memorial details had been announced at the time of the first reports.

The tributes embedded in the obituaries themselves sketched the scale of the loss. Reuters called Huerta one of the foremost women in United States labour history and credited her with giving the union its slogan. The Associated Press described her resolve as having cemented her place as one of the nation's most influential labour leaders, civil rights icons and feminist activists. USA TODAY observed that few activists were as deeply woven into modern California history as Huerta, whose influence stretched from Central Valley labour camps to Sacramento, Washington and a new generation of activists.

Obama's 2012 Medal of Freedom presentation remains the most quoted official tribute to her work. Presenting the award, he praised Huerta as a tenacious leader and joked about borrowing her slogan for his own campaign — a joke that only worked because the slogan had already become part of the American political vocabulary. Her own words, quoted across the obituaries, return again and again to ordinary people: the farmworkers who stopped buying grapes, the families who marched, the voters she spent her nineties registering.

Her family life was inseparable from that work. Huerta was married twice, first to Ralph Head and later to a husband named Huerta, whose surname she retained after their divorce. From the early 1970s, her life partner was Richard Chavez, Cesar Chavez's brother, and together they had four children. She also had seven children from her two earlier marriages. The mother of 14 children in total, she balanced family life with years travelling between California farm communities, negotiating, rallying and campaigning. Thirteen of her children survive her, along with 24 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren, according to the obituary.

Why It Matters

Huerta's death matters because the institutions she built still shape daily life for millions of workers who harvest America's food. The right of California farmworkers to organise and bargain collectively, the rest breaks and clean water and pesticide protections written into union contracts, and the 1986 immigration law she lobbied for in Washington all trace back to campaigns she helped lead. Those gains were not abstract: they changed what a day in the fields looked like, and whether a worker who complained about conditions could do so without losing a job.

It also matters because Huerta changed who American labour leadership could be. In a movement whose public face was overwhelmingly male — Chavez himself was the face of the organisation — Huerta was its chief negotiator and strategist, the person across the table from growers and in the rooms where boycott strategy was decided. Her prominence, and the feminist organising she pursued after leaving the union's leadership, opened space for women in labour and Latino politics that outlasted her own career.

Finally, her final disclosure matters for how the movement's history will now be told. By speaking in 2026 about abuse she said she endured in 1966, Huerta forced institutions that celebrate the farmworker movement — schools named for her, a state day in her honour, a documentary about her life — to hold two truths at once: a movement that delivered historic gains for powerless workers, and a leader within it who, by her account, abused his power over women. How California, the union and historians handle that tension will be part of her legacy, whether they wish it or not.

What Happens Next

The family said it would announce plans to recognise and celebrate Huerta's life and legacy later, and asked for privacy in the meantime. No public memorial date, location or funeral arrangement had been published in the first reports on Wednesday. Given her stature in California, public tributes from state officials, labour leaders and the foundation are likely in the coming days, and her Bakersfield-based foundation is expected to become a focal point for memorial activity.

The practical work she left behind continues without pause. The Dolores Huerta Foundation, founded in 2002, continues grassroots organising, leadership development and civic engagement across California, and its organisers face an immediate test: the November 3 midterms, for which Huerta spent her final years registering voters and endorsing candidates. Whether her death becomes a rallying point in that final stretch of campaigning will be visible within days.

Longer term, the reckoning she began in March 2026 is unlikely to end with her death. Historians, the union and California's civic institutions will have to decide how to present Chavez's legacy alongside Huerta's account, and how to address the broader criticism she herself acknowledged — that sexism and sexual harassment within the union were not always adequately addressed. That conversation, like the boycotts she once organised, will be decided less by celebrated leaders than by ordinary people acting collectively, exactly as she always insisted.
