Flavio Bolsonaro has landed in Miami, completing a secretive two-day journey out of Brazil that began with a midnight border crossing into Argentina and ended on the tarmac at a Florida executive airport, days after he lost Brazil's presidential election and defied a Supreme Court order to surrender his passports. The defeated candidate, his wife and their two daughters stepped off a private Gulfstream jet at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, where the United States government had promised them entry visas, turning a Brazilian political crisis into a fresh diplomatic rift between the two largest countries in the Americas.

Bolsonaro, a 45-year-old Brazilian senator and a close ally of United States President Donald Trump, lost Sunday's presidential runoff to leftist incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, then refused to concede and threatened to seek annulment of the result. Within 48 hours he was gone: across a bridge into Argentina late on Tuesday night, aboard a private jet to Ecuador in the early hours of Wednesday, and onward to Florida by mid-morning. The arrival, captured in television images of the family disembarking, ended a day of fevered speculation about his whereabouts — and opened a new chapter of legal and political uncertainty for a man who now faces criminal investigations at home and the loss of his Senate immunity in February.

Key Points

What Happened

The first hard evidence of Bolsonaro's arrival came on Wednesday morning, when Reuters television images showed the senator, his wife and their two daughters disembarking from the Gulfstream G400 and heading into Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport in Opa-locka, Florida. The Associated Press, through Scripps News, confirmed the landing the same morning, and USA TODAY reported that Bolsonaro and members of his family were photographed exiting an airplane at the airport in Miami-Dade County. The State Department had said a day earlier that it would issue visas to Bolsonaro and his family and allow them to enter the United States.

The journey had unfolded in stages, each one reconstructed from migration records and flight-tracking data. Argentina's migration department said Bolsonaro, his wife Fernanda Antunes Figueira Bolsonaro, and his daughters Carolina Figueira Bolsonaro and Luiza Figueira Bolsonaro crossed into Argentina at 10:50 p.m. local time on Tuesday, through the Tancredo Neves International Bridge, the main border checkpoint linking Brazil to Argentina's northeastern province of Misiones. At 11:30 p.m., shortly after clearing immigration control, the four boarded a private charter flight operated by Baires Fly S.A., bound for the Ecuadorean city of Guayaquil, according to the filed flight plan.

FlightAware data showed the Gulfstream G400, registration LV-JQW, departing Puerto Iguazu at 12:22 a.m. (0322 GMT) and landing in Guayaquil at 3:46 a.m. (0846 GMT). The aircraft then departed for Miami's Opa-locka Executive Airport, where it was scheduled to land at 9:18 a.m. local time (1318 GMT). How Bolsonaro entered Ecuador remained unclear: Ecuadorean ministries did not immediately respond to requests for comment, nor did Argentina's presidency or Baires Fly. Argentina's migration authority later said that those who crossed possessed valid travel documentation and faced no legal impediments to entering the country — a statement that did little to settle the question of which passport Bolsonaro used, since his Brazilian passports had been cancelled after he missed the court deadline. Allies had said late on Tuesday that he also holds an Italian passport.

The landing capped 48 hours of extraordinary drama. Bolsonaro had been widely expected to win Sunday's election, having led in the first round, but suffered a shock defeat to Lula, who took about 51.8 percent of the vote to Bolsonaro's 48.2 percent, a margin of roughly 4.4 million votes. Bolsonaro refused to concede, and on Monday, after Brazil's Supreme Court ordered him to hand over his passports, he publicly insisted he had no plans to leave. "I have never thought about leaving the country," he said. "I will hand over my passports and defend myself against this travesty, which is a clear attempt to intimidate me." By Tuesday night, he was crossing into Argentina.

Background and Context

The court order that Bolsonaro defied came from Federal Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who ordered the senator to surrender his ordinary, diplomatic and Italian passports by noon on Tuesday and imposed a departure ban, as part of an investigation into alleged money laundering linked to illegal digital betting platforms. Bolsonaro is under investigation by the Supreme Court in two cases covering alleged corruption, money laundering and tax evasion. He denies wrongdoing. After the 24-hour deadline expired on Tuesday morning without compliance, federal police formally revoked his Brazilian passports.

The passport order itself had a trigger. Bolsonaro's younger brother Eduardo, who has lived in Texas since 2025, suggested during an October 23 appearance on the "Louder with Crowder" podcast that his sibling should flee Brazil if he did not win the election. Those comments reportedly prompted Brazilian authorities to order Flavio Bolsonaro to surrender his passport. Eduardo's role, and the family's deep ties to the United States, have been central to the story from the start: Flavio Bolsonaro visited the White House in May, and Trump has repeatedly championed the family.

There is also a family precedent, and it is an awkward one for anyone predicting a quick return. Bolsonaro's father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, also travelled to the United States after refusing to concede defeat to Lula in 2022, during Joe Biden's presidency. He eventually returned to Brazil three months later, but was later sentenced to 27 years in prison for plotting a coup after supporters stormed government buildings in Brasilia. The elder Bolsonaro's fate hangs over his son's flight: Flavio Bolsonaro loses his immunity from prosecution when his Senate term ends in February, a deadline that gives his legal troubles a hard calendar edge.

The wider backdrop is a Brazil-United States relationship already under strain. Lula has accused Washington of colluding with the Bolsonaro family to help return them to power, and Reuters reported ahead of Sunday's election on a US State Department campaign to restore the Bolsonaros to office. World leaders and the Organisation of American States endorsed the election result and congratulated Lula. Trump's refusal to endorse the result — he called the election "very strange" — puts Washington at odds with that consensus and deepens the rift Bolsonaro's departure threatens to widen.

Flavio Bolsonaro Miami Arrival: Reactions From Trump, Lula and Congress

Trump gave his blessing early on Wednesday, speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland after returning from campaigning in Texas on Tuesday. "Well, I would approve," he said of Bolsonaro coming to the United States. "I think they're fine people." He added: "The election was really strange, and I thought it was terrible." He did not elaborate, but stressed that he did not endorse the election results. Trump has previously alleged that Flavio's father was a victim of judicial persecution in Brazil, and his administration's decision to grant the family entry visas followed that line.

Lula's response, delivered on Tuesday — his 81st birthday — to several dozen supporters outside the presidential residence in Brasilia, was unsparing. "I regret that he left Brazil, because he could have stayed here and proven that the accusations are not true," Lula said. "This act of leaving Brazil is shameful." He added: "A person who has done nothing wrong has nothing to fear. A citizen who secretly leaves the country is someone who has something to hide." He also took aim at the family's American ties, saying Brazil is merely their second homeland and the United States their first.

Other reactions cut across party and national lines. Democratic Representative Joaquin Castro said Trump should tell Congress whether his administration played any role in Bolsonaro's exit from Brazil. In Argentina, lawmaker Marcela Pagano said on X that she had filed a suit at a federal court in Puerto Iguazu late on Tuesday seeking an investigation into her country's government for people smuggling and abuse of authority. "Our government says 'he never entered' Argentina. If he did, someone let him in. If they wanted to take him out through a federal airport, someone looked to the other side," Pagano wrote. "Argentina's border is not a VIP runway for anyone. Sovereignty is neither negotiated nor lent." Supporters of Bolsonaro, meanwhile, have said the lawmaker intends to seek asylum in the United States, though he has not said so himself.

Why It Matters

This arrival matters first because of what it does to Brazil's justice system. A sitting senator, under Supreme Court investigation, has left the country after a court ordered him to stay and hand over his passports. If he remains abroad, Brazilian prosecutors face the slow, uncertain machinery of international police cooperation and extradition — a process that, from the United States, has historically been slow. If he returns, he faces the investigations he fled, with his Senate immunity expiring in February. Either way, the flight itself has become evidence in the political argument about him: to his supporters, proof of persecution; to his critics, proof of guilt.

It matters second because of what it does to the United States' relationship with Brazil. The Trump administration did not merely admit a defeated foreign candidate; it did so days after an election its own president has refused to endorse, and after Lula accused Washington of working to restore the Bolsonaro family to power. Every step the administration takes now — asylum, visas, public statements — will be read in Brasilia as a signal about whether Washington respects Brazil's courts and its voters. The rift between the two most populous nations in the Americas, already real, now has a person at its centre, living in Florida.

It matters third because of the precedent within the Bolsonaro family itself. Jair Bolsonaro's own Florida exile after 2022 ended with a return and a 27-year prison sentence. His son's flight, following the same route to the same state, invites the same question: is Florida a refuge, a staging ground for a political comeback, or a waiting room before a reckoning at home? Bolsonaro has pledged to lead the opposition. Doing so from abroad, with cancelled passports and open investigations, would be unusual — and the answer will shape Brazilian politics well beyond this week.

What Happens Next

The immediate questions are legal. Three Workers' Party lawmakers have asked the Supreme Court to order Bolsonaro's arrest and seek an Interpol Red Notice. That request is not an arrest warrant, and no order or notice had been publicly confirmed. If Brazil seeks international police cooperation, any arrest or extradition would need further legal procedures. Separately, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered police to investigate alleged foreign funding of Bolsonaro's campaign, along with other foreign interference such as social media manipulation. Authorities have yet to announce any charges against him.

The political questions run in parallel. Congress may press the Trump administration, as Representative Castro has demanded, to explain what role, if any, it played in Bolsonaro's exit. Argentina faces its own inquiry, after Pagano's court filing. And in Brazil, attention will turn to Bolsonaro's Senate seat, to the February expiry of his immunity, and to whether the opposition he has pledged to lead can function with its figurehead in Miami.

Then there is the personal question only Bolsonaro can answer: does he seek asylum, does he return, or does he wait? His Monday statement — that he would hand over his passports and defend himself — was overtaken by events within a day. His next public statement, whenever it comes, will be the first real indication of which path he has chosen. US News Pulse will update this story as Brazilian courts, the Trump administration and Bolsonaro himself respond.
